Synopsis: Prior to European settlement, the Northern Mixed-grass Prairie was a mosaic of wetland, grassland and grass-shrub habitats, with riparian and floodplain forests along major drainages. Even today, the physiographic area can be characterized as being one of the largest still relatively intact grassland landscapes that persist in North America. It is the continent’s most important production area for waterfowl and is the heart of the breeding range for some of North America’s rarest species of grassland birds. A comparison of relative abundance estimates among physiographic areas sampled by the North American Breeding Bird Survey indicates that more than 40% of the world’s population of Baird’s Sparrows,...
The Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida) is a threatened subspecies whose recovery depends, in part, on both an understanding of its habitat requirements and the protection of its habitat. Therefore, we evaluated habitat composition and configuration around owl sites in the Tularosa Mountains, New Mexico, using a vegetation map derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) digital imagery and digital elevation models. Owls occupied sites with more mature mixed-conifer and mature pine and less pinyon-juniper than random sites. No difference existed in the amount of young forest between owl and random sites. After correcting for the area of the vegetation classes within owl territories, no difference existed...

Conclusions: The proportion of wetlands in the watershed at different scales affects dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in downstream lakes and rivers. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: This study quantifies how the proportion of wetlands in the watershed at different scales affects dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in downstream lakes and rivers. Whether the watershed influence varies with season or hydrologic type of lake was also examined. The scaling and modelling approach used offered a useful way to examine heterogeneity of land cover types within the watershed and spatial arrangements, while allowing generality of conclusions with a large sample size. Zones of increasing distance from...
