CalHABMAP provides updates on current algal blooms and facilitates information exchange among HAB researchers, managers and the general public in California. A major component of this program is regional HAB monitoring. Water samples and net tows are collected once per week to monitor for HAB species and naturally occurring algal toxins. Water quality data including temperature, salinity, and nutrients are also collected.

Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) passive samplers were deployed at all sites between August 31 and September 2, 2020, and retrieved after 7 days. Discrete water samples were collected when SPATTs were deployed, and at 2 sites (USGS station IDs 01670257, 0167014792), samples were also collected when the SPATTs were recovered. Sonde data were collected when deploying and retrieving...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

This data set is comprised of three tables with results of algal toxin screening for saxitoxin and domoic acid. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to screen seabirds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas, 2017.
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides vertical profiles of water-quality data collected from two sites in Milford Lake, Kansas, August 24-25, 2017. Data are rounded to USGS significant figures. A multiparameter water-quality sonde was used to measure water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and dissolved organic matter fluorescence. Photosynthetically active radiation was measured using a spherical underwater quantum sensor during each sample collection with daylight present. Vertical profiles were collected approximately 75 minutes apart and alternated between the two sites. This data release was produced in...
In temperate latitudes, toxic cyanobacteria blooms often occur in eutrophied ecosystems during warm months. Many common bloom-forming cyanobacteria have toxic and non-toxic strains which co-occur and are visually indistinguishable but can be quantified molecularly. Toxic Microcystis cells possess a suite of microcystin synthesis genes (mcyA–mcyJ), while non-toxic strains do not. For this study, we assessed the temporal dynamics of toxic and non-toxic strains of Microcystis by quantifying the microcystin synthetase gene (mcyD) and the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene, 16S (an indicator of total Microcystis), from samples collected from four lakes across the Northeast US over a two-year period. Nutrient concentrations...

The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey Colorado Water Science Center is to be the principal source of timely, high-quality science information on Colorado’s water resources, and to be a leader in providing an understanding of how those resources relate to the people and environment of the state. This will help planners, managers, and others to make the decisions necessary for the wise use of these limited and shared resources.
