Offshore exploration and production of oil and gas have increased significantly in the last decade. Computer models are used in emergency response, contingency planning, and impact assessment to simulate the behavior of oil and gas if accidentally released from a well, pipeline, or ship. There are two types of models used for this purpose-models that have both plume dynamics stage and the advection diffusion stage and models that are of simplified nature that has only the advection diffusion stage. This paper compares both types of models and shows what information are similar and what are different and under what conditions. The paper also examines in detail about different criteria that can be used as the transition...

USGS developed The National Map (TNM) Gazetteer as the Federal and national standard (ANSI INCITS 446-2008) for geographic nomenclature based on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The National Map Gazetteer contains information about physical and cultural geographic features, geographic areas, and locational entities that are generally recognizable and locatable by name (have achieved some landmark status) and are of interest to any level of government or to the public for any purpose that would lead to the representation of the feature in printed or electronic maps and/or geographic information systems. The dataset includes features of all types in the United States, its associated areas, and Antarctica,...
NOTICE: Given the large size of the MACAv2METDATA dataset, and a known issue with the data server being used to host it, initial load times may take a very long time and / or time out. Subsequent requests should be faster due to caching, but the cache clears periodically and the dataset must be rescanned prior to access. We are working on a fix for this issue. In the mean time, please use the dataset with care and make sureyou've reviewed the GDP scalability guidelines. https://my.usgs.gov/confluence/display/GeoDataPortal/Geo+Data+Portal+Scalability+Guidelines This archive contains daily downscaled meteorological and hydrological projections for the Conterminous United States at 1/24-deg resolution utilizing the...

Index of unpublished, archival resources, that may aid researchers in locating critical mineral deposits in Wisconsin. The approximately 2500 items in this collection are from eight major and two smaller collections. The item title contains the focus area to which the item pertains. The resources listed are stored at the WGNHS office in Madison, Wisconsin, and though much of this collection is still on paper only, any items will be made available to researchers upon request.
Dataset for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas & Herd Management Areas. Herd Areas were designated in 1971 as places where wild horses and/or burros were found during the initial flights in 1971. Federal lands identified in 1971 but not managed for wild horses and burros are called Herd Areas. As additional surveys were done and data gathered, it was determined that some of these lands and animals were actually on private lands and/or were private animals. Areas with private animals that were 'claimed' during the claiming period were not carried forward as Herd Areas. Herd Areas were carried forward in land use plans and determinations were made as to whether or not to manage animals on these federal lands. Federal...
This project used species distribution modeling, population genetics, and geospatial analysis of historical vs. modern vertebrate populations to identify climate change refugia and population connectivity across the Sierra Nevada. It is hypothesized that climate change refugia will increase persistence and stability of populations and, as a result, maintain higher genetic diversity. This work helps managers assess the need to include connectivity and refugia in climate change adaptation strategies. Results help Sierra Nevada land managers allocate limited resources, aid future scenario assessment at landscape scales, and develop a performance measure for assessing resilience.

This dataset contains information derived from 30 meter LANDFIRE VCC in the Middle Rockies Ecoregion.Broad-scale alterations of historical fire regimes and vegetation dynamics have occurred in many landscapes in the U.S. through the combined influence of land management practices, fire exclusion, ungulate herbivory, insect and disease outbreaks, climate change, and invasion of non-native plant species. The LANDFIRE Project produces maps of simulated historical fire regimes and vegetation conditions using the LANDSUM landscape succession and disturbance dynamics model. The LANDFIRE Project also produces maps of current vegetation and measurements of current vegetation departure from simulated historical reference...
Historical land use/land cover for 2005. Spatial and temporal distributions of current and projected land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes are essential in modeling future potential carbon storage and fluxes within the nation's major ecological regions (Zhu and others, 2010). Annual raster-based maps of future LULC conditions for the years 2006 to 2100 were created based on historical LULC conditions combined with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (IPCC-SRES) scenario elements to develop four distinct, equally plausible outcomes. The historical LULC baseline conditions were derived from 1.) a modified version of the 1992 National Land Cover Dataset (http://www.epa.gov/mrlc/nlcd.html),...

U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior - The annual Geographic Names acquisition plan is to collect geographic name data over the United States and its territories through the Board on Geographic Names processes. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a Federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government. The Board comprises representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the Board promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes...

A review of the four main wood energy sectors in the U.S. was conducted to explore historic trends and the impact of alternative energy prices and public policies on wood energy consumption. High oil prices have triggered the adoption of government regulation and financial incentives to promote greater use of wood energy over the last four decades. However, the amount of wood energy consumed in the U.S. industrial sector was driven mainly by the output of the pulp and paper products industry and not by energy prices or any particular public policy incentive. Residential consumption of wood energy was positively correlated with competing energy prices. Public policies seem to have had a greater impact on wood energy...

This collection contains three statistically downscaled time series (datasets) for the Red River Basin (South Central U.S.), and one dataset used as historical observations. In particular, three different Global Climate Models (MPI-ESM-LR, CCSM4 and MIROC5) were downscaled using three different quantile mapping methods (CDFt, EDQM and BCQM). We do not recommend the use of the BCQM method, as the CDFt method is considered an improvement of it. The datasets created using the BCQM method are published as a demonstration of the risks of using flawed methods. The variables of interest are: daily maximum and minimum temperature, and daily precipitation. The spatial resolution of the datasets in the collection is 1/10th...

Included are samples of three types of State and Territorial maps: the Holt's maps, the US Department of Interior maps and the Transportation/Postal Route maps. The Holt's maps were produced between 1883 and ca.1890. They show the development and settlement of Wyoming and include the location of some early ranches and trails. The Archives has US Department of Interior State maps from 1876 to 1947. They are extremely detailed, including information as diverse as the location of US land offices, Indian and Military Reservations, forest and bird reserves, etc. The Transportation/Postal Route maps vary greatly depending on the reason they were produced. Many of the early Postal Route maps don't even show roads or trails,...

The USGS’s FORE-SCE model was used to produce a long-term landscape dataset for the Delaware River Basin (DRB). Using historical landscape reconstruction and scenario-based future projections, the data provided land-use and land-cover (LULC) data for the DRB from year 1680 through 2100, with future projections from 2020-2100 modeled for 7 different socioeconomic-based scenarios, and 3 climate realizations for each socioeconomic scenario (21 scenario combinations in total). The projections are characterized by 1) high spatial resolution (30-meter cells), 2) high thematic resolution (20 land use and land cover classes), 3) broad spatial extent (covering the entirety of the Delaware River basin, corresponding to USGS...
