This thematic map illustrates the median value of houses in the United States in 2010. The 2010 median home value is an estimate of home value based on total owner occupied units. This data variable is included in Esri's Updated Demographics (2010/2015). This map shows Esri's 2010 estimates using Census 2000 geographies. The map is designed to be displayed with a 30–50 percent semi-transparency for overlay on other basemaps as noted in the map legend. NPScape housing metrics are calculated using outputs from the Spatially Explicit Regional Growth Model. Metric GIS datasets are produced seamlessly for the United States (Lower 48). The methods underlying these calculations are available for download through the NPScape website: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/monitor/npscape/methods.cfm.
NPScape housing density data sets for the conterminous U.S.: web links to map services and downloadable data. There are three map service data sets: housing density projections for 1970, 2010 and 2050. Downloadable geodatabase includes housing density projections for each decade from 1970-2100. Projections are based on the Spatially Explicit Growth Model (SERGom) (reference: Theobald, D. 2005. Landscape patterns of exurban growth in the USA from 1980 to 2020. Ecology and Society 10(1): 32. The American Community Survey (ACS) is a national, publicly available survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects information about population, education, housing, economic status, and more. Planners, public officials, entrepreneurs, and researchers rely on the data collected through this survey to help understand community conditions and to support community planning efforts.Seasonal homes are abundant in the Appalachians, and are particularly prominent among the more rural areas that provide access to the region’s cultural and natural amenities and scenic views. These factors, coupled with an ideal mountain climate compared to surrounding areas, have brought national attention and have made much of...

Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.
