A study using multiple techniques provided insight into tectonic influences on ground water systems; the results can help to understand ground water systems in the tectonically active western United States and other parts of the world. Ground water in the San Bernardino Valley (Arizona, United States and Sonora, Mexico) is the main source of water for domestic use, cattle ranching (the primary industry), and the preservation of threatened and endangered species. To improve the understanding of ground water occurrence, movement, and sustainability, an investigation was conducted using a number of complementary methods, including major ion geochemistry, isotope hydrology, analysis of gases dissolved in ground water,...

NPScape housing density data sets for the conterminous U.S.: web links to map services and downloadable data. There are three map service data sets: housing density projections for 1970, 2010 and 2050. Downloadable geodatabase includes housing density projections for each decade from 1970-2100. Projections are based on the Spatially Explicit Growth Model (SERGom) (reference: Theobald, D. 2005. Landscape patterns of exurban growth in the USA from 1980 to 2020. Ecology and Society 10(1): 32. The American Community Survey (ACS) is a national, publicly available survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects information about population, education, housing, economic status, and more. Planners, public officials, entrepreneurs, and researchers rely on the data collected through this survey to help understand community conditions and to support community planning efforts.Seasonal homes are abundant in the Appalachians, and are particularly prominent among the more rural areas that provide access to the region’s cultural and natural amenities and scenic views. These factors, coupled with an ideal mountain climate compared to surrounding areas, have brought national attention and have made much of...

NPScape housing metrics are calculated using outputs from the Spatially Explicit Regional Growth Model. Metric GIS datasets are produced seamlessly for the United States (Lower 48). The methods underlying these calculations are available for download through the NPScape website: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/monitor/npscape/methods.cfm. This record provides default metadata for metric GIS data developed and distributed by NPScape. More information and updates are available through the NPScape website: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/monitor/npscape/.
This dataset depicts the percentage of housing units by the decade of their construction, and the median value of a subset of the housing units. This dataset was derived from official U.S. Census 2000 data products processed by the Conservation Biology Institute. These attributes are depicted at the Census Block-Group level, the finest spatial scale for which the underlying metrics are available. Areas with larger percentages of housing units constructed during 1990-2000 indicate areas that have experienced recent growth in residential development. In particular, areas that have experienced growth outside urban areas may be further evaluated for residential development in close proximity to publicly-owned areas...
