This raster dataset is the result of a subtraction of the classification of raster datasets bhd2030us and bhd2000us. Both are produced using the SERGoM v3 model, they depict housing density for the coterminous US in 2030 and 2000, resp., and are based on 2000 US Census Bureau block (SF1) datasets. (The classication of the subtraction is shown below.) A raster layer that portrays not-developed (and assumed to be undevelopable) called CUS_UPP_100 depicts protected/unprotected lands and Census water polygons. The Forests to Faucets project uses a GIS to model and map the land areas across the United States that are most important to surface drinking water sources, as well as to identify forested areas important to the protection of drinking water and areas where drinking water supplies might be threatened by development, insects and diseases, and wildland fire. The results of this assessment provide information that can identify areas of interest for protecting surface drinking water quality. The spatial dataset can be ncorporated into broad-scale planning and can help identify areas for further local analysis. This product is a 100-meter resolution raster which classifies urban lands in the conterminous United States by the year in which they were “first developed.” The classification is based on housing density by era for 1940-2010 developed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison SILVIS lab. The classification was applied by identifying a housing unit density threshold which matched current-era “development” as represented by U.S. Census Urban Areas polygons, then re-applying that threshold to former eras back to 1940. Opportunities to improve the ecological functioning of agricultural landscapes in the U.S. Midwest exist, and could include the restoration of native plant communities to improve biodiversity or the modification of agricultural production systems to enhance the provisioning of ecosystem services to society. This tabular data set contains information on historic housing densities for every 10 years from 1940-2010, compiled for two spatial components of the NHDPlus version 2 data suite (NHDPlusv2) for the conterminous United States; 1) individual reach catchments and 2) reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped housing and population counts from the decennial U.S. Census Data at block group level geography to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the coterminous U.S. We also overlaid the raw housing data with the Protected Areas Dataset (PAD version 1.1) to split census block groups into privately and publicly owned sub-blocks, thereby creating a map that more accurately locates where people and houses exist in space. This data is useful within a GIS for mapping and analysis at national, state, and local levels.

Climate and land-use change are major components of global environmental change with feedbacks between these components. The consequences of these interactions show that land use may exacerbate or alleviate climate change effects. Based on these findings it is important to use land-use scenarios that are consistent with the specific assumptions underlying climate-change scenarios. Conclusions:Bird and medium sized mammal population densities were affected by the arrangement and density of exurban housing developments, with both species groups avoiding developments up to 180 away. The composition of native wildlife is altered in the vicinity of exurban housing developments.Thresholds/Learnings:Avian densities were altered up to 180m away from homes on the perimeter of ex-urban developments.
