A comprehensive list of 38 categories of anthropogenic drivers of change in marine ecosystems developed through expert workshops (S1) was assessed for data availability on a global scale. We intentionally did not further subdivide these categories into unique drivers (e.g. each specific type of pollutant) as this would lead to over-emphasis of certain activities when impacts are summed. We limited our analyses to anthropogenic drivers with pre-existing global coverage or those for which we could assemble or develop global coverage. Although many regional-scale data and data with a global scope but incomplete coverage exist for a variety of specific human activities, inclusion of these data would bias global comparisons...

Predictions of raven occurrence in the absence of anthropogenic environmental effects. Raven point counts were related to landscape covariates using Bayesian hierarchical occupancy models and the means of the posterior distributions for relevant effects were used to generate the predictions.

From June to September 2017, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected a total of 116 surficial sediment and bedrock samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, ephemeral channels below wastepiles, nearby outcrops, and background areas representative of the undisturbed lithology on the western slope of the northern half of the Oquirrh Mountain Range, approximately 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The sample locations can be spatially clustered into four groups: the Bates Canyon group in the foothills below Bates Canyon; the Middle Canyon group in Middle Canyon; the Ridgeline group within the Bingham Mining District located at or near the Tooele-Salt Lake County border on the Oquirrh Mountain ridge;...

The purpose of this study was to understand how the U.S. Department of Interior’s federal land and resource managers and their stakeholders (i.e., NPS, BLM, FWS, BOR, BIA and tribes, among others) are experiencing and dealing with drought in their landscapes. The database is part of the Drought Risk and Adaptation in the Interior project. We conducted in-depth interviews (n=41) with DOI and tribal land managers in three case sites across the north central United States (northwest Colorado, southwest South Dakota, and Wind River Reservation), the goal of which was to develop a better understanding of drought vulnerabilities, risks, and responses in high-risk, multi-jurisdictional landscapes across the Missouri River...

This dataset is comprised of eight files related to salt marsh monitoring data or measures of of human disturbance (i.e. human impacts in terms of physical, chemical, and land-use stressors) collected at 33 marsh study units (MSUs) in five National Parks within the NPS Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN) along the northeastern coast of the US. Two files contain data related to the species and coverage of salt marsh vegetation observed in MSUs (1 data file, 1 definitions file). Two files contain data related to the species and abundance of nekton collected from creeks, pools and ditches in MSUs (1 data file, 1 definitions file). Two files contain data related to the height of key salt marsh vegetation species...

These data show the multilocus genotypes, gender, and midline carapace length (MCL) for desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) sampled in the central portion of the Mojave desert tortoise range. This data supports the following publication: Dutcher, K.E., Vandergast, A.G., Esque, T.C., Mitelberg, A., Matocq, M.D., Heaton, J.S. and Nussear, K.E., Genes in space: what Mojave Desert tortoise genetics can tell us about landscape connectivity. This CSV file contains landscape factors representing anthropogenic disturbances to stream habitats summarized within 6th level Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC12) watersheds of the Watershed Boundary Dataset. The source datasets compiled and attributed to spatial units were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fluvial fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire study area in the way that they were assembled; (3) broadly representative of conditions in the past 10 years, and (4) of sufficient spatial resolution that they could be used to make valid comparisons among local catchment units. Variables summarized at the HUC12 scale include measures of anthropogenic land uses, population density, roads, dams,...

Contamination to aquatic resources from co-produced water (brine) associated with energy development has been documented in the northeastern portion of the Williston Basin; an area mantled by glacial drift. The presence and magnitude of brine contamination can be determined using the contamination index (CI) value from water samples. Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey published a section (~2.59 km2) level risk assessment of brine contamination to aquatic resources for Sheridan County, Montana, using oilfield and hydrogeological parameters. Our goal was to improve the Sheridan County assessment (SCA) and evaluate the use of this new Williston Basin assessment (WBA) across 31 counties mantled by glacial drift in...
