Part of north wall of great hydraulic mine at North Bloomfield. Except at the extreme right the mining operations ceased more than twenty years ago. The view illustrates the slowness with which vegetation reoccupies the surface, and also the sculpture of the gravel cliffs by atmospheric agencies. Nevada County, California. 1909.

Version 10.0 of these data are part of a larger U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) project to develop an updated geospatial database of mines, mineral deposits, and mineral regions in the United States. Mine and prospect-related symbols, such as those used to represent prospect pits, mines, adits, dumps, tailings, etc., hereafter referred to as “mine” symbols or features, have been digitized from the 7.5-minute (1:24,000, 1:25,000-scale; and 1:10,000, 1:20,000 and 1:30,000-scale in Puerto Rico only) and the 15-minute (1:48,000 and 1:62,500-scale; 1:63,360-scale in Alaska only) archive of the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection (HTMC), or acquired from available databases (California and Nevada, 1:24,000-scale...

hydraulic mine,
One of the largest hydraulic mines (1.6 km2) is located in California’s Sierra Nevada within the Humbug Creek watershed and Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park (MDSHP). MDSHP’s denuded and dissected landscape is composed of weathered Eocene auriferous sediments susceptible to chronic rill and gully erosion whereas block failures and debris flows occur in more cohesive terrain. This data release includes a 1992 digital surface model (DSM), 1992 orthophoto mosaic, masked orthophoto of the study area, 1992 ground cover classification, and 1992 pruned DSM with the vegetation bias removed. Stereo-photogrammetry was used to create a 1992 digital surface model (DSM) and orthophoto mosaic from archived 1992 aerial photographs....

This data release has been updated in 2017 with a newer version that includes additional states. It is recommended to use the updated data and map services of the new data release located at: https://doi.org/10.5066/F78W3CHG These data are part of a larger USGS project to develop an updated geospatial database of mines, mineral deposits and mineral regions in the United States. Mine and prospect-related symbols, such as those used to represent prospect pits, mines, adits, dumps, tailings, etc., hereafter referred to as “mine” symbols or features, are currently being digitized on a state-by-state basis from the 7.5-minute (1:24, 000-scale) and the 15-minute (1:48, 000 and 1:62,500-scale) archive of the USGS Historical...

The 2014 DEM was derived from an available aerial LiDAR dataset collected in 2014 by the California Department of Conservation. The geomorphic map was derived for the study area from using a multi-scale spatial analysis. A topographic...
