The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the city of Grandview, Missouri, assessed flooding of the Little Blue River at Grandview resulting from varying precipitation magnitudes and durations, and expected land cover changes. The precipitation scenarios were used to develop a library of flood-inundation maps that included a 3.5-mile reach of the Little Blue River and tributaries within and adjacent to the city. A hydrologic model of the upper Little Blue River Basin, and hydraulic model of a selected study reach of the Little Blue River and tributaries were constructed to assess streamflow magnitudes associated with simulated precipitation amounts and the resulting flood-inundation conditions. The...

Create an inventory of water-related models that have been developed for the Rio Grande/Bravo basin. The summary includes a description of model river extent, spatial and temporal resolution, time period, model type, and their possible application for testing environmental flows or climate change future alternatives.

Severe droughts have been associated with regional-scale forest mortality worldwide. Climate change is expected to exacerbate regional mortality events; however, prediction remains difficult because the physiological mechanisms underlying drought survival and mortality are poorly understood. We developed a hydraulically based theory considering carbon balance and insect resistance that allowed development and examination of hypotheses regarding survival and mortality. Multiple mechanisms may cause mortality during drought. A common mechanism for plants with isohydric regulation of water status results from avoidance of drought-induced hydraulic failure via stomatal closure, resulting in carbon starvation and a cascade...

Description of Work U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provided a one-week training course for ''Geomorphic Analysis of Fluvial Systems'' to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other state and local agencies in Chicago. This provided an introduction to the concepts of how stream channels change over time due to natural and human-caused changes in the watershed. This training assisted managers in understanding the goals and limits of stream restoration specific to Great Lakes streams. Much of the training centered on sediment movement in channels and also was applicable to EPA managers working on clean-sediment TMDLs and nutrient-sediment interactions.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center (OK-TXWSC) works in cooperation with approximately 100 municipalities, river authorities, groundwater districts, and State and Federal agencies in Texas and Oklahoma to provide reliable, impartial scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers. This information is gathered by the USGS OK-TXWSC to minimize the loss of life and property from natural disasters, to contribute to the conservation and sound economic and physical development of the Nation’s natural resources, and to enhance the quality of life by monitoring water, biological, energy, and mineral resources. This ScienceBase community serves as a USGS OK-TXWSC...

This data release presents pumping rate data, water-level drawdown and recovery data, and atmospheric pressure data collected during 48 pumping tests conducted in 2015 and 2016 for a hydraulic tomography field experiment in the mudstone aquifer underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. The pumping rate data include rates measured by in-line flow meters and rates measured manually by recording the time to fill a known volume with the pump discharge water. The water-level drawdown data include drawdowns measured by fiber-optic pressure transducers, and drawdowns measured by strain-gauge transducers. For many tests, water-level recovery data are also provided, which measure the change...
Although our current (1990) knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic processes is based on many years of study, there are river environments where these processes are complex and poorly understood. One of these environments is in mountainous areas, which cover about 25 percent of the United States. Use of conventional hydrologic and hydraulic techniques in mountain-river environments may produce erroneous results and interpretations in a wide spectrum of water-resources investigations. An ongoing U.S. Geological Survey research project is being conducted to improve the understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic processes of mountainous areas and to improve the results of subsequent hydrologic investigations. Future...
This project inventories and reviews available water resource models used to meet multiple (and often competing) water resource management objectives. Water resource modeling tools have been developed for many different regions and sub-basins of the Rio Grande/Bravo (RGB). Each of these tools have specific objectives, whether it is to explore drought mitigation alternatives, conflict resolution, climate change evaluation, tradeoff and economic synergies, water allocation, reservoir operations, or collaborative planning. We specifically evaluate the applicability of those models to evaluating trade-offs in meeting societal and environmental flow requirements to recover native ecosystems. This work communicates the...
