A crepuscular or nocturnal lifestyle has evolved in bees several times independently, probably to explore rewarding pollen sources without competition and to minimize predation and nest parasites. Despite these obvious advantages, only few bee species are nocturnal. Here we show that the sensitivity of the bee apposition eye is a major factor limiting the ability to forage in dim light. We present data on eye size, foraging times, and light levels for Megalopta genalis (Augochlorini, Halictidae) in Panama, and Lasioglossum (Sphecodogastra) sp. (Halictini, Halictidae) in Utah, USA. M. genalis females forage exclusively during twilight, but as a result of dim light levels in the rain forest, they are adapted to extremely...

Near-term future invasive species, insects, and disease potential distribution model, summarized to 1KM grid cell reporting units for the San Luis Valley - Taos Plateau Study Area. Attribute IID_N_CAT1 is valued along a scale of low potential future distribution to high potential future distribution. The results are based on Landscape Assessment modeling efforts to characterize the potential future risk of invasion by exotic species and forest insect pests and diseases.

The Visual Resource Inventory Classes data were provided by BLM. This dataset presents current and future change agent models and combined future potential for climate change (PFC) within Visual Resource Inventory Classes. Potential for change (PFC) was determined by calculating the maximum potential for change among all change agents within each 1 km reporting unit. Current and future landscape intactness (LCM_C_FZ and LCM_N_FZ) are based on measures of landscape development and invasive species. Current vegetation departure (VDEP) is based on LANDFIRE vegetation departure and characterizes the departure of current vegetation from historic reference vegetation conditions. Current and future human development (DEV_C_FZ...

The videos of ant (Crematogaster sp.) predation on giant applesnail (Pomacea maculata) egg masses were taken on September 24 of 2018 at the Hudson Woods Unit of the Texas Mid-Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex (29°09’52” N, 95°30’5” W). Jennifer Wilson (US Fish and Wildlife Service) took the videos using a smart phone.
This web map provides a watershed index of surface drinking water importance, a watershed index of forest importance to surface drinking water, and a watershed index to highlight the extent to which development, fire, and insects and disease threaten forests important for surface drinking water. This tabular dataset is meant to be joined with the NRCS Watershed Boundary Dataset HUC-12. The results of this assessment provides information that can identify areas of interest for protecting surface drinking water quality. The spatial dataset can be incorporated into broad-scale planning, such as the State Forest Action Plans, and can be incorporated into existing decision support tools that currently lack spatial...

Honey bees (Apis mellifera), a critical agricultural pollinator in many areas, have a high rate of infection with a large DNA virus, Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV), yet little is known about its ecology or impact on honey bee colonies, other than its ubiquity and apparent low virulence. This study scanned over 5,000 public data sets to detect AmFV sequences in honey bees as well as a parasitic mite of honey bees, Varroa destructor, that is a potential vector of AmFV. The data release consists of these files: 1. AmFV.genome.assemblies.aligned.fas, which contains new AmFV draft genome sequences generated by this study aligned with existing reference genome accessions downloaded from the National Center for...

The risk mapping effort was initiated in 1995 with the formation of a group of specialists from several disciplines including representatives from state and other federal agencies to map and identify risk to insect caused tree mortality. An area is defined to be at risk if 25% or more tree mortality (beyond the normal level of approximately 0.6% annually) is expected over the next 15 years. This effort developed a statewide insect mortality risk layer based upon rules and statistics developed for the National forests and expanded to cover all state and private forest land. Rule structures were based primarily upon stand density index and also included, precipitation, percent canopy cover of host species, and host...

The disturbance team contributes to the goals of the LandCarbon project and conducts research focusing on 3 main components: (1) monitoring disturbance patterns and their impacts on carbon cycling, (2) understanding drivers creating the patterns and impacts, and (3) using scenarios of change to project future potential disturbance patterns, their interactions with other disturbances, and subsequent impacts on carbon cycling. Key research questions driving our work include: (1) Monitoring: How can remotely sensed, field-based, and other data best be used individually and synergistically to track changes in fire occurrence in ecosystem types with long fire-return intervals and the impacts on carbon? How do disturbances...
