In this study, organic petrology and Osmium isotope (187Os/188Os) stratigraphy, major and trace element, and programmed pyrolysis analysis were performed on five outcrop samples from western New York, USA. Seawater Os isotope composition is controlled by radiogenic input from weathering of the ancient land and nonradiogenic input from extraterrestrial and hydrothermal sources (Peucker-Ehrenbrink and Ravizza, 2000). Os is complexed by the organic matter present at the time of deposition without isotope fractionation. Seawater Os isotope composition is reconstructed by analysing the Os isotope composition of the organic-rich sedimentary rock (Turgeon et al., 2007). The short residence time of Os (10 – 50 kyrs) in...

The Permian Basin, straddling New Mexico and Texas, is one of the most productive oil and gas (OG) provinces in the United States. OG production yields large volumes of wastewater that contain elevated concentrations of major ions including salts (also referred to as brines), and trace organic and inorganic constituents. These OG wastewaters pose unknown environmental health risks, particularly in the case of accidental or intentional releases. Releases of OG wastewaters have resulted in water-quality and environmental health effects at sites in West Virginia (Akob, et al., 2016, Orem et al. 2017, Kassotis et al. 2016) and in the Williston Basin region in Montana and North Dakota (Cozzarelli et al. 2017, Cozzarelli...

Samples were collected from Clear Lake, California from 2019-2022 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) California Water Science Center, the USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC), the US Environmental Protection Agency, and EA Engineering Science and Technology Inc. to assess the extent and cycling of legacy mercury (Hg) contamination from Sulphur Bank Mine. Samples of waste rock, sediments, groundwater, and biological tissue (zooplankton, bluegill, smallmouth bass, Mississippi silversides, and largemouth bass) were analyzed for Hg stable isotopes by the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Laboratory. Mercury concentrations for sediments, waste rocks, and groundwaters are included within...

This dataset presents the results of analysis of aquatic biota tissue samples, collected over multiple sampling events from in from 2007 to 2014 at three sites (Las Vegas Bay, Overton Arm, and Boulder Basin) in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. The tissue samples were analyzed for concentrations of Carbon 13 and Nitrogen 15 isotopes by the University of California, Davis in Davis, California. Data are presented in 1 spreadsheet worksheet that is organized by year, location, and taxa. General trophic level (Vander Zanden and Rasmussen, 1999) and calculations of benthic reliance (Umek and others, 2010) also are included. Combined data from sampling events in 2007 and 2008 previously were published in Umek and...

As part of the larger Great Lakes Sediment Surveillance Program (GLSSP), the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Laboratory (MRL) partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Minnesota-Duluth to assess contaminant concentrations within surface sediments and sediment cores from the Laurentian Great Lakes. Sediments were assessed for mercury concentrations and mercury stable isotopes to examine spatial trends and sources of mercury within the lakes. In 2021, 30 sites were surveyed in Lake Superior. Mercury concentrations within Lake Superior surface sediment ranged from 1.1 to 161.2 ng/g. Mercury isotopes displayed a range in δ202Hg from -0.12 to -1.74 ‰ with measurable Δ199Hg...

This dataset contains data from the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis and deuterium injection as methods to estimate the body composition of female polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation. Data are provided on bioelectrical impedance resistance measures, the enrichment level of deuterium oxide that was injected and measured in blood samples, and morphological measures.

This dataset presents the results of passive water sampling conducted at 2 sites in 2013 and 3 sites in 2014 in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) and Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) were deployed in Las Vegas Bay and Overton Arm in 2013 and Las Vegas Bay, Boulder Basin, and Overton Arm in 2014. The samplers were analyzed for concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorines (DDT-type compounds and their degradates), polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), waste indicators (WW), and yeast estrogen screen (YES) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC)...

This dataset details mercury concentrations and mercury stable isotope values collected as part of an environmental mercury assessment encompassing the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers as well as two U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites. The Tensaw River was also sampled as part of this study as a reference site, absent of mercury contamination. As a part of this survey, sediments, waters, and biota (largemouth bass) were measured to assess mercury transport and bioaccumulation of mercury within the Mobile River Basin. High mercury concentrations and isotope values indicative of industrial contamination were found in sediments and fish of Superfund sites. Lower concentrations and isotope values indicative...

Data in this data release were obtained from water samples collected under Yellowstone National Park (YNP) Research Permit YELL-05194 in 2017, 2019, and 2020 through the Integrated Yellowstone Studies Project funded by the Mineral Resources Program. These samples were used to assess mercury cycling within YNP. Water samples were analyzed for total mercury and methylmercury, the bioaccumulated form in food webs. This data informs the biogeochemical processes controlling the broad range of mercury and methylmercury concentrations observed in the park. Natural abundance mercury stable isotopes were also collected to determine if mercury sources or cycling processes varied between different hydrothermal sources. Data...

Fine-grained sediment was collected from the banks of Napa River, Sonoma Creek, and tributaries in March 2018 and from shallow nearshore areas of the northern reach of San Francisco Bay in April 2018. Bulk sediment was dated using activities of short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides (beryllium-7, cesium-137, and lead-210). Contents of potentially toxic metals and source-rock-indicative elements, including rare earth elements, were quantified in the fine fraction of sediment (particles less than 0.063 mm diameter). Ratios of stable carbon-13/carbon-12 isotopes and total carbon to total nitrogen were determined in sedimentary organic matter.

Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater at Hinkley is undergoing bioremediation using added ethanol as a reductant in a volume of the aquifer defined as the In-situ Reduction Zone (IRZ). This treatment effectively reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is rapidly sequestered by sorption to aquifer particle surfaces and by co-precipitation within iron or manganese bearing minerals forming in place as reduction proceeds. Successful mitigation of the extant Cr(VI) plume is projected to require 90 to 220 years, at which time ethanol loading will likely cease. This projection assumes that Cr(VI) removal is permanent and that no Cr(III) will oxidize back to Cr(VI) in the event of changing hydrological conditions resulting in oxygen...

Strontium isotope ratios of historical Kīlauea summit and rift lavas were analyzed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) at the Southwest Isotope Research Laboratories of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Denver. There were 151 analyses of 49 samples obtained from the field, the collections of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), and the Smithsonian Institution. Data for associated reference materials are described in the process steps . The Sr isotope ratios may be used to test models for the volcano’s magmatic plumbing system.
