The NRP had its beginnings in the late 1950's. Since that time, the program has grown to encompass a broad spectrum of scientific investigations. The sciences of hydrology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, ecology, biology, geology, and engineering are used to gain a fundamental understanding of the processes that affect the availability, movement, and quality of the Nation's water resources. Results of NRP's long-term research investigations often lead to the development of new concepts, techniques, and approaches that are applicable not only to the solution of current water problems, but also to future issues that may affect the Nation's water resources. Basic tools of hydrology that have been developed by the...

U.S. and Canada Lakes represents the major lakes within the United States and Canada. This data set provides five feature classes for displaying the data at different scales. Everything about the feature classes is the same but the level of generalization and its name. The base feature class is called and isn't generalized. The least generalized feature class is called _1, the next more generalized feature class is called _2, and so on. For best performance, use the most appropriate feature class when displaying or printing.

Hydrographic features for Wyoming at 1:100,000-scale, including perennial and intermittent designations and Strahler stream order attributes for streams. Does not include man-made ditches, canals and aqueducts. The data was originally produced by USGS, a Digital Line Graph (DLG) product, though this product was enhanced (edgematched, some linework and attributes corrected, stream order attribute added). A subset of this dataset is also available for distribution, including only major streams (order 4 to 7) and major lakes and reservoirs. In order to reduce the size of this subset, the line segments were dissolved to remove unncessary segments.
Denitrification is a critical process regulating the removal of bioavailable nitrogen (N) from natural and human-altered systems. While it has been extensively studied in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, there has been limited communication among denitrification scientists working in these individual systems. Here, we compare rates of denitrification and controlling factors across a range of ecosystem types. We suggest that terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems in which denitrification occurs can be organized along a continuum ranging from (1) those in which nitrification and denitrification are tightly coupled in space and time to (2) those in which nitrate production and denitrification are relatively...

This assessment presents GIS data containing results of all freshwater assessment analyses conducted by The Nature Conservancy for Washington State. This data set includes values for biodiversity metrics (e.g. suitability, threat, number of species) across all HUC6 watersheds in Washington State, as well as identifies rivers, watersheds, and wetlands that provide the best opportunities for conservation of Washington's native freshwater species and ecological systems. Fore more information, visit waconservation.org .

Level 2 of the Global Lakes and Wetlands Database (GLWD) comprises the shoreline polygons of permanent open water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, and rivers) with a surface area >= 0.1 square km, excluding the water bodies contained in GLWD-1.

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water...

Statewide lakes were assembled from seventeen separate files in the USGS 1:2,000,000 Digital Line Graphs (DLG) dataset and include only those polygons with AREA greater than 20 acres (80940 square meters). Polygons with the attribute MIN = 100 or arcs with the attribute LINECODE = 'L' are valid lakes. For data codes and details, please refer to the US Geological Survey Circular 895, 1982. Due to the limitation of ARC/INFO software at the time of processing these files, the lakes were originally processed into three groups. Then a framework of arcs surrounding those three groups allowed all the lakes to be united into one statewide lakes coverage. Any lakes which were interested either by the boundaries of the seventeen...
