USGS developed The National Map (TNM) Gazetteer as the Federal and national standard (ANSI INCITS 446-2008) for geographic nomenclature based on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The National Map Gazetteer contains information about physical and cultural geographic features, geographic areas, and locational entities that are generally recognizable and locatable by name (have achieved some landmark status) and are of interest to any level of government or to the public for any purpose that would lead to the representation of the feature in printed or electronic maps and/or geographic information systems. The dataset includes features of all types in the United States, its associated areas, and Antarctica,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has generated land surface form classes for the contiguous United States. These land surface form classes were created as part of an effort to map standardized, terrestrial ecosystems for the nation using a classification developed by NatureServe (Comer and others, 2003). Ecosystem distributions were modeled using a biophysical stratification approach developed for South America (Sayre and others, 2008) and now being implemented globally (Sayre and others, 2007). Land surface forms strongly influence the differentiation and distribution of terrestrial ecosystems, and are one of the key input layers in the ecosystem delineation process. The methodology used to produce these land surface...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior - The annual Geographic Names acquisition plan is to collect geographic name data over the United States and its territories through the Board on Geographic Names processes. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a Federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government. The Board comprises representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the Board promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes...

Ecoregions are based on perceived patterns of a combination of causal and integrative factors including land use, land surface form, potential natural vegetation, and soils (Omernik 1987). This is a copy of the ecoregion coverage of Omernik (1987) with some item names modified.

This dataset is a scientifically based, hierarchical system of map units for Southwestern Wyoming that incorporates ecological principles and processes across a range of scales. These units are a mapping of terrain features having similar terrain configuration, ecological properties and management implications within which situational landscape-ecosystems can logically and conveniently be defined. While the process of delineation of these units is subjective, units are hierarchically nested into the structure of the ECOMAP (1993) national hierarchy of ecological units. The includes Landtype Associations as well as higher hierarchical units in which Landtype Associations are imbedded. Associations are defined by...

Exotic plant survey polygon data representing infested or non-infested areas including inventory, treatment, and monitoring efforts. Polygons generated from point and line features using a buffer distance entered in the field or data was collected as a polygon for large or irregular sized patches. Data collected by field personnel using mapping grade GPS and a statewide data collection protocol. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE: see supplemental section on how to use this GeoDatabase.

This map depicts the major terrestrial landforms in the Wyoming Basin Ecoregion. Major hydrologic features within the Wyoming Basin Ecoregions are shown for by hydrologic region 1st level and 2nd level watersheds. In addition, the Bureau of Land Management Field Office boundaries, Land ownership, distribution of ecological communities and dominant land use that intersect the Wyoming Basin Rapid Ecoregional Assessment project area are portrayed. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. The User assumes the entire risk associated with its use of these data and bears all responsibility in determining whether these data are fit for the User's intended use....

This dataset shows integrated terrain units for a subregion of the Kuparuk River Watershed in Alaska. The integrated terrain units are a combination of geomorphology, geology, and vegetation complexes (all of which are included as attributes). This dataset was created at a 1:25,000 scale.

Landform is derived from the Land Facet tool using USGS digital elevation model (DEM) data. This data layer classifies areas as ridgelines, plains, valleys, or slopes. These data were provided by Dudek, for full metadata please contact them directly.

Four-level Braun-Blanquet vegetation type hierarchies of an arctic (a section of the Arctic Coastal Plain at Atkasook, Alaska) and an alpine (Indian Peaks area, Colorado Southern Rocky Mountains) area were compared through their vascular plant taxa composition. Vegetation types at all hierarchy levels were more numerous, less well defined, and less clearly distributed along the controlling environmental gradients in the Arctic than in the alpine. This greater environmental and vegetational heterogeneity and relatively poor definition of vegetation types are probably controlled by the surface disturbances of the thaw-lake cycle, rivers, cryoturbation, and wind, which cause significant horizontal movement of materials...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This digital dataset describes classes of land-surface form in the conterminous United States. The source of the data is the map of land-surface form in the 1970 National Atlas of the United States, pages 62-63, which was adapted from Edwin H. Hammond, "Classes of land surface form in the forty-eight states, U.S.A," Annals of the Assoc. of Am. Geographers, v.54, no. 1, 1964, map supp. no. 1, 1:5,000,000.
Since the beginning of the Cenozoic period several hundreds of metres of the sedimentary cover have been removed from the Colorado Plateau. Palaeoclimatic considerations show that the Colorado Plateau has been dominated by dry climates throughout the Cenozoic with the possible exception of the early Palaeocene. Today in the still prevailing arid climate, which strongly accentuates differences in rock resistance, the relief shows a structurally controlled cuesta scarp topography in the slightly deformed strata of alternating resistance. In examining whether the denudational efficiency of scarp retreat was sufficient to account for the wide erosional gaps in the sedimentary cover, rates of scarp retreat were determined...
