The revegetation of northern tailings sites presents many challenges. By using plants, which are naturally adapted to both the tailings environment and northern climatic conditions, fewer amendments and intervention will be required. In 2003, vegetation growing on and off the tailings and soil at three Yukon Territory, Canada, mine. sites (United Keno Hill, Mount Skukum, and Wellgreen) was assessed to determine the chemical and physical conditions likely to challenge revegetation. Through Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), I found that these plant communities are largely governed by a chemical-nutrient gradient and a ground cover gradient. The native grass Deschampsia caespitosa L. Beauv. was found colonizing...
In 2001 and 2002 Bureau of Land Management (BLM) investigators surveyed, mapped, or sampled 108 mineral occurrences in the 2.9 -million-acre Delta River Mining District, which extends across the Alaska Range from Paxson to Delta Junction, in east-central Alaska. The BLM collected and analyzed 487 rock chip, placer, pan concentrate, and stream sediment samples during the investigation. In addition, the BLM had 264 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream sediment samples analyzed by the inductively coupled argon plasma – atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) technique for 40 elements and by fire assay, atomic absorption finish, for gold, platinum, and palladium. A subset of 17 of these samples, all with high nickel...
Alluvial gold mining, or placer mining, represents a major disturbance to stream ecosystems in interior Alaska. This process typically involves re-routing the stream to one side of the valley while the gravels are removed across the floodplain for processing. The stream is then re-directed back into a reclaimed new channel after mining has ceased in that section of stream. Macroinvertebrate colonization of reclaimed stream reaches is necessary for benthic community recovery following mining. Macroinvertebrate community assemblages at 36 sites on six streams in interior Alaska were examined. Sites with different mining histories were compared to control sites. TWINSPAN classification and ordination of sites using...
As persuasive communication is among the least intrusive of all management tools, this thesis proposes that persuasive messaging based upon the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) could be used to promote low-impact ORV use in the Yukon's backcountry. Information was collected through a content analysis of three documents that focused on the use of ORVs in Yukon. Information was gathered, analyzed and used to create four persuasive messages. Messages were then presented to focus groups and tested for effectiveness and adherence to the theoretical framework used. Focus group data suggests some message content was likely processed with a bias and primarily reinforced strong initial attitudes towards unrestrictive ORV...
"The Resource Access Roads Framework approved in February 2013 outlines the goals and principles that guide decisions around the development and management of resource access roads. This framework calls for a “successional permit” to regulate resource access roads in areas such as off mineral claims and on oil production leases beyond the normal three-year land use permit. It is time to update the regulations to include permitting specifically for resource access roads based on the priorities set in the framework document and Yukon’s knowledge and experience of regulating resource roads in the north. This new regulation under the Territorial Lands (Yukon) Act will provide up-to-date land management tools and...
A systematic water-quality study of the Fortymile River and many of its major tributaries in eastern Alaska was conducted in June of 1997 and 1998. Surface-water samples were collected for chemical analyses to establish regional baseline geochemistry values and to evaluate the possible environmental effects of suction-dredge placer gold mining and bulldozer-operated placer gold mining (commonly referred to as “cat mining”). In general, the water quality of the Fortymile River is very good, with low total dissolved solids and only two cases in which the concentration of any element exceeded primary or secondary drinking-water quality standards. In both cases, iron exceeded secondary drinking-water limits. At...

In 2003, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) completed the third year of the Delta River Mining District study. Investigators surveyed, mapped, or sampled 51 mineral occurrences in the 2.9-million-acre Delta River Mining District, which extends across the Alaska Range from Paxson to Delta Junction, in east-central Alaska. The BLM collected and analyzed 446 rock chip, placer, pan concentrate, and stream sediment samples during the investigation. Fieldwork for the Delta River Mineral study is scheduled to be completed in 2004 with a final report being produced in 2005.

The Mine Site Reclamation Policy for Northwest Territories serves four main objectives: Ensure the impact of mining on the environment and human health and safety is minimized. Reduce the environmental liability that falls to government to the greatest extent possible. Provide industry and the public with a clear signal of the government's expectations. Build positive and supportive relationships with the new regulatory authorities coming into operation in the North. ... The principles and objectives laid out in this Policy will guide DIAND's decision-making powers in matters where DIAND has authority and will shape DIAND's position as an intervener in regualtory processes carried out by resource management boards....
Purpose: To present the Final Plans submitted by Imperial Oil Resources Ventures Ltd. (IORVL) documenting the abandonment and removal of thermistors established to investigate soil and ground conditions at borrow sites, stream crossings, and frost heaves as a prelude to the construction of the Mackenzie Gas Project Pipeline in the Sahtu Settlement Area.
