USGS HayWired earthquake scenario landslide probability Map service created to support the The HayWired Scenario: An Urban Earthquake in a Connected World story map. More information on the HayWired scenario: Detweiler, S.T., and Wein, A.M., eds., 2017, The HayWired earthquake scenario—Earthquake hazards: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2017–5013–A–H, 126 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20175013v1

Chalk Cliffs, located 8 miles southwest of Buena Vista, Colorado, is one of the most active debris-flow areas in the state (U.S. Geological Survey). This "Child item" page includes videos of debris flows captured by one of the high-definition cameras at the monitoring site in Chalk Cliffs, CO. This camera (Middle camera) is located near Station 2. The attached figure "station_and_camera_locations.png" provides an overview figure with the location of the three cameras and three stations along the channel. Video recording for all cameras is triggered using a rainfall threshold, derived from rainfall measurements from rain gauges (Michel et al., 2019). The complete videos for all the cameras are downloaded manually...

Pluvials can have dramatic impacts on the shoreline bluffs of Lake Michigan due to increases in both shallow subsurface moisture conditions related to the prolonged wet weather pattern and wave erosion as the lake level rises. These changes can result in an increased frequency and magnitude of slope failures. During the most recent pluvial, the monthly average level of Lake Michigan rose 1.9 m from a record low in January 2013 to a near record high in June-July 2020. To assess the impacts on coastal bluffs from slope failures during the recent pluvial, an inventory of landslides was completed, including slope failures active during the early part of the pluvial, on the coastal bluffs of South Manitou Island, part...

This inventory was originally created by Tanyas and others (2022) describing the landslides triggered by the M 7.5 Papua New Guinea earthquake that occurred on 25 February 2018 at 17:44:44 UTC. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different authors use different mapping techniques. This inventory also could be associated with other earthquakes such as aftershocks or triggered events. Please check the author methods summary and the original data source for more information on these details and to confirm the viability of this inventory for your specific use. With the exception of the data from USGS sources, the inventory data and associated metadata were not acquired by the U.S. Geological...

Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA), located in central Alaska, is home to iconic and dynamic landscapes surrounding the tallest mountain range in North America, the Alaska Range. DENA preserves over 6 million acres of wild land that provides opportunities for recreation, subsistence hunting and gathering, preservation of cultural resources, and scientific research. Despite its size and popularity, DENA has only one road—the dead-end, 92-mile Denali National Park Road (hereafter referred to as the Park Road). The Park Road is mostly gravel; only the first 15 miles are paved. It is the only access for most DENA infrastructure, including visitor centers, staff facilities, campgrounds, and businesses. The Park...

The Homestake Reservoir 7.5' quadrangle lies at the northwestern end of the Upper Arkansas Valley, and headwaters of the Arkansas River, and the Roaring Fork, Fryingpan, and Eagle Rivers of the Colorado River system. The quadrangle lies within tectonic provinces of the 1.4 Ga Picuris Orogeny, the late Paleozoic Ancestral Rockies, Late Cretaceous-Paleocene Laramide orogeny, Oligocene to Miocene, and Pliocene?, volcanism, and Miocene to the present Rio Grande rift extensional tectonics. In the eastern half of the quadrangle, high-angle, east-dipping, Neogene normal faults displace Proterozoic rocks, and locally Mio-Pliocene? volcanic rocks. Many quartz veins and hydrothermally altered zones are exposed along the eastern...

This inventory was originally created by the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, El Salvador (2001) describing the landslides triggered by the M 6.6 San Salvador, El Salvador earthquake that occurred on 13 February 2001 at 14:22:05 UTC. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different authors use different mapping techniques. This inventory describes the landslides triggered by the the M6.2 Norcia, Italy earthquake that occurred on 2016-08-24 at 01:36:32 UTC. The inventory comes from the Italian Catalogue of Earthquake-Induced Ground Effects (Italian acronym CEDIT) by Martino and others (2014), which contains inventories from multiple earthquakes. To obtain the most up to date version of the entire, original catalog along with more details about its compilation, please visit the CEDIT webpage on the website of the Centre for Research (CERI) of the Department of Earth Sciences in the Sapienza University of Rome: http://www.ceri.uniroma1.it/index.php/web-gis/cedit/. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different...

This inventory was originally reated by Sekiguchi and Sato (2006) describing the landslides triggered by a sequence of earthquakes, with the largest being the M 6.6 Niigata-Chuetsu, Japan earthquake that occurred on 23 October 2004 at 08:56:00 UTC. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different authors use different mapping techniques. This inventory includes landslides triggered by a sequence of earthquakes rather than a single mainshock. Please check the author methods summary and the original data source for more information on these details and to confirm the viability of this inventory for your specific use. With the exception of the data from USGS sources, the inventory data...

This data release provides the locations and certain key metrics of landslide features offshore southern California, including landslide perimeters, scarps, evacuation zones, debris aprons, and slide-prone areas in geographic information system (GIS) shapefile format. The offshore region of southern California is a tectonically active area that includes more than 20 fault-bounded basins and ridges that are subject to various types of mass-wasting and landslide processes. The collection of high-resolution seafloor mapping data offshore southern California, mostly within the last 25 years, provide a new data set that forms the basis for the identification and mapping of landslides and slide-related features throughout...

Presented here is a point cloud collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using an oblique plane-mounted camera system, covering the area of the Mud Creek landslide on California State Route 1 (SR1), Mud Creek, Big Sur, California. The point cloud is referenced to previously published lidar data and contains RGB information as well as XYZ. Point cloud coordinates are in NAD83 UTM Zone 10 meters. Imagery was collected with a Nikon D800 camera in RAW format and processed using structure-from-motion photogrammetry with Agisoft PhotoScan version 1.2.8 through 1.3.2. Pointclouds were clipped to an AOI using LASTools. The AOI was created from a KMZ in Google Earth and transformed to a shapefile using ArcMap 10.5.

From late December 2022 to January 2023, a series of atmospheric river storms produced widespread landsliding in the San Francisco Bay area of California. USGS scientists performed reconnaissance field work to document the extent of landsliding in the region and compiled reports of landslides from media and California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports. This data release documents locations of road cut and shallow hillslope landslides triggered between December 31, 2022 and January 18, 2023. This inventory is not intended to be a complete inventory, but a reporting of observations made with limited time and resources. The point locations include descriptions and associated attributes, described in the metadata. Media...

This data release contains extent shapefiles for 16 hypothetical slope failure scenarios for a landslide complex at Barry Arm, western Prince William Sound, Alaska. The landslide is likely active due to debuttressing from the retreat of Barry Glacier (Dai and others, 2020) and sits above Barry Arm, posing a tsunami risk in the event of slope failure (Barnhart and others, 2021). Since discovery of the landslide by a citizen scientist in 2020, kinematic structural elements have been mapped (Coe and others, 2020) and ground-based and satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been used to track ongoing movement at a high spatial resolution (Schaefer and others, 2020; Schaefer and others, 2022). These efforts have...
