The U.S. Geological Survey provides a wide range of scientific information to an even wider group of stakeholders. Understanding what capacities are needed and if and or where these capacities exist across the USGS landscape is critical in moving science to the next level of use, implementation, and visualization. The concept behind the groups organized to conduct and interpret the survey that collected these data took advantage of the USGS’s position as a science organization with expertise spanning a wide range of science disciplines, stakeholders, and responsibilities. A survey was conducted of USGS employees (Sep 20-Nov 20) to get a current sample of the capacities that exist across the USGS.
This data release contains products from Savoy & Harvey (2021) which modeled photosynthetically active radiation and gross primary productivity (GPP) for 173 streams and rivers across the continental United States. Estimates of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were generated using a model that considers the contribution of light attenuation from riparian zones as well as within the water column. PAR estimates at the stream surface and within the water are both provided and each of these two estimates were converted to GPP estimates using a fixed light use efficiency. This dataset provides the estimated cell abundance and total biovolume for whole-water picoplankton samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at 25 different sites in Kansas between August of 2020 and August of 2022. The samples were analyzed by BSA Environmental Services, Inc. This data is part of a larger multi-agency project between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and USGS called the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN). The goal of the CyAN project is to develop a satellite-based, early warning system to detect harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater systems.

These data were compiled for modeling efforts of Bureau of Reclamation National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analyses for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, Arizona. Objective(s) of our study were to forecast water temperature, smallmouth bass population growth rate, and smallmouth bass entrainment rates under different water management scenarios. These data represent forecasted smallmouth bass entrainment rates and smallmouth bass population growth rates. A study to develop an earth observation monitoring system to detect harmful algal bloom (HABs) presence within selected north Texas reservoirs using satellite imagery was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This data release provides the data collected for this study including site locations, water-quality, phytoplankton, and hyperspectral water surface reflectance data. Data were collected between September of 2019 and December of 2020 at 39 sites distributed across 16 reservoirs and 1 stream. Under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Research Lab (USGS MRL) conducted a multiyear assessment of mercury across the Laurentian Great Lakes. Biannual sampling was conducted across all five lakes onboard the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) research vessel Lake Guardian (in years 2010–2014, 2018) at pelagic sampling locations established by the long-term US EPA Great Lakes monitoring program. This dataset consists of two files containing northing, easting, and elevation ("XYZ") information for light detection and ranging (lidar) data representing the beach and near-shore topography of Lake Superior at the Duluth Entry, Duluth, Minnesota. The point data is the same as that in the LAS dataset used to create a digital elevation model (DEM) of the approximately1.87 square kilometer surveyed area. Lidar data were collected July 28, 2020 using a boat mounted Velodyne unit. Multibeam sonar data were collected July 28-29, 2020 using a Norbit integrated wide band multibeam system (iWBMSc) sonar unit. This data release includes zooplankton data collected from a collaborative effort for Environmental Protection Agency’s Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). Zooplankton surveys were conducted during the growing season, from late April to early November, in two Lake Michigan transects in 2010, two Lake Huron transects in 2012, eight Lake Michigan transects in 2015, and nine Lake Huron transects in 2017. Zooplankton samples were collected by whole water-column tows at two or three stations in different bottom-depth categories (i.e., shallow, middle, and deep) in each of the transects. This dataset records results from a bottom-deployed upward-looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP, 600 kHz Workhorse Monitor, Teledyne RD Instruments, Poway, California) deployed during the summer of 2019 (late June until early August) near Hammond Bay, Lake Huron (45.5948 degrees north, -84.1542 degrees east). This data set includes count, location, and ancillary habitat data for fishes sampled in adjacent reaches of Georgiana Slough, Sacramento River, and Steamboat Slough in the northern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. It also includes data on the stomach contents of selected individual black basses (Micropterus). Fishes were sampled by boat electrofishing from approximately January-May, 2020-2022, plus gillnetting in 2020. Samples were collected under a stratified random sampling design. Gillnetting involved short duration (~60 minute) sets of monofilament experimental gill nets. This dataset represents elevation data of the beach topography and near-shore bathymetry before placing dredge spoils on the beach at Minnesota Point near the Duluth Entry of Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota. The data was acquired using a lidar sensor, single-beam and multibeam sonars. The dataset includes DEMs of the terrestrial beach areas and topobathy (combined terrestrial and bathymetry), LAS and XYZ files of lidar, single-beam, and multibeam point data, and 2-ft contours. Data were collected in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District, to evaluate movement of placed material and overall change of near-shore bathymetry after beach nourishment.

Lake Erie walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) recruitment fluctuates annually and depends partially on their diet and growth during their first year of life. To determine how age-0 walleye have responded to changes in prey species and abundance, larval and young of year walleye were collected from western Lake Erie in 2019 and 2014. Larval and young of year fish stomachs were extracted and dissected, with prey contents removed for later identification. This data release contains cyanotoxin concentrations for microcystins, cylindrospermopsins, anatoxins, and saxitoxins assessed using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) on 363 samples collected from 82 surface-water sites located in the Cascade Range in Oregon, and eight sites located outside of the Oregon Cascade Range in Washington and California, during 2016-2020. Three sample types were assessed: 1) benthic colonies and mats of cyanobacteria (n=109), 2) plankton net tows (n=90), and 3) Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking samplers (SPATTs)(n=164).

A bathymetric survey of Nimrod Lake, Arkansas, was conducted in late April to mid-May, 2016, by the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMG WSC) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using methodologies for sonar surveys similar to those described by Wilson and Richards (2006) and Richards and Huizinga (2018).
