Lake-bottom sediment and associated quality-control samples were collected in August 2020 from one coring location (U.S. Geological Survey station 413756070321301, ASHUMET POND, MASHPEE MI-ASHPD-0011) in Ashumet Pond downgradient from a former fire-training area on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The core was collected to determine if per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were present in the bottom sediments of a lake known to have elevated concentrations of PFAS in surface water and groundwater (Tokranov and others, 2021), and whether the sediments could act as a continuous source of PFAS to the lake. Processing the sediment core entailed collection of discrete samples at intervals ranging from 1-5 centimeters (cm)...
Hydroacoustics is a common sampling tool in freshwater and marine ecosystems, yet the full potential of this tool remains restricted, owing to an incomplete understanding of the influence of many data collection settings. In particular, investigation into the effects of the pulse duration setting on common hydroacoustic measures remains limited. Hydroacoustic theory suggests that pulse duration can affect how many single targets (e.g., individual fish or invertebrates) are detected, the mean target strength (TS) of sample cells, and estimates of target density, especially in ecosystems with an abundance of potential targets. To quantify the influence of the pulse duration setting on these important and commonly...

Mono Lake is a hypersaline (~85 ppt), alkaline (pH 9.8), closed-basin lake located in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, USA (38°N, 119°W). Water enters the lake primarily from snowmelt and exits by evaporation (~1 m/yr). This hydrological condition, plus weathering reactions in the lake’s tributaries, produce the uniquely high salinity and pH characteristic of Mono Lake (Garrels & MacKenzie, 1967). These properties also tightly tie lake levels and water chemistry to climate, with modern and Pleistocene high stands correlated with wet Sierra Nevada conditions (Benson et al. 1998). Mono Lake is typically monomictic, with thermal-driven summer stratification that is disrupted by winter, wind-driven...

Climate change has been shown to influence lake temperatures in different ways. To better understand the diversity of lake responses to climate change and give managers tools to manage individual lakes, we focused on improving prediction accuracy for daily water temperature profiles in 68 lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin during 1980-2018. The data are organized into these items: Spatial data - One shapefile of polygons for all 68 lakes in this study (.shp, .shx, .dbf, and .prj files) Model configurations - Model parameters and metadata used to configure models (1 JSON file, with metadata for each of 68 lakes, indexed by "site_id") Model inputs - Data formatted as model inputs for predicting temperature a. Lake...

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2023 data to...

Holocene sediments at Emerald Lake in central Utah (3090 m a.s.l), document the paleohydroclimatic history of the western Upper Colorado River headwater region. Multi-proxy analyses of sediment composition, mineralogy, and stable isotopes of carbonate (d18O and d13C) show changes in effective moisture for the past ca. 10,000 years at millennial to decadal timescales. Emerald Lake originated as a shallow closed-basin cirque pond during the early Holocene. By ca. 7000 cal yr BP, higher lake levels and carbonate d18O values indicate rising effective moisture and higher proportions of summer precipitation continued at least until ca. 5500 cal yr BP when a landslide entered the lake margin. Between ca. 4500 and 2400...

The USGS measured photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, wavelength between 400 and 700 nanometers) at Malheur Lake, Oregon, as vertical profiles and as continuous measurements at a fixed depth, in 2017 and 2018. Malheur Lake is a large, shallow, turbid lake located in southeastern Oregon that fluctuates widely in surface area in response to yearly precipitation and climatic cycles. High suspended-sediment concentrations likely are negatively affecting the survival of aquatic plants. The PAR measurements in this data release were collected to assess PAR attenuation in the lake, and to quantify attenuation as a function of water quality (primarily turbidity). The continuous PAR measurements were collected at 10-minute...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the St. Croix River Research Station – Science Museum of Minnesota, updated a previously developed CE-QUAL-W2 hydrodynamic and water-quality model of Madison Lake, Minnesota (Smith and others, 2017). The previous version partitioned phytoplankton into four general algal communities or groups: (1) Bacillariophyta (diatoms) and Chrysophyta (chrysophytes); (2) Chlorophyta (green algae); (3) Cyanophyta (cyanobacteria); and, (4) Haptophyta and Cryptophyta (flagellates). For the updated model, the Cyanophyta group (originally referred to as blue-green algae) has been divided into two groups: a nitrogen-fixing Cyanophyta group, generally representative of Anabaena,...
