As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Cores were continuous from land surface down to 240 feet below land surface and were drilled by consultants to EPA using sonic rotary–a fluidless drilling technique. Data on this page consist of: 1) field drilling notes from USGS and consultants to EPA (GeoSystems Analysis, Inc., Tucson, Arizona); 2) field descriptions of core lithology–including grain size, sorting, color, mineralogy,...

Borehole erosion tests were performed to quantify sediment erosion rates as a function of depth below grade and flow speed at locations along the Sacramento and American Rivers in 2019. The dataset consists of: - borehole caliper files describing the initial geometry of the borehole, and its shape after each test flow event, - where available, a digital time series describing discharge into the hole - where available, a digital time series describing water level in the water supply tank - log sheets with details such as test location, date, and personnel - digital log sheets in .pdf format include field-based and laboratory-based soil classification data, see "Drilling log file explanation.txt" for explanation of...

Lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic observations for the unconfined aquifer of western Cape Cod are limited near coastal groundwater-discharge areas. In spring 2015, a 310-foot-deep boring was drilled and a well was installed to 100 feet below land surface to facilitate detailed study of aquifer characteristics along the southern coast of Cape Cod. Characteristics of interest included the depth and character of the freshwater/saltwater interface and bedrock surface, and vertical variations in grain size, bedding structure, and hydraulic conductivity. Sediment cores were collected from land surface to the bedrock surface at 305 feet below land surface. Bedrock cores were collected from 305 to 310 feet below land...

All sediment samples from auger holes, outcrops, and cores are processed to determine texture. The 1-2 mm coarse sand fraction is packaged separately, and about half of these fractions are categorized lithologically by a glacial geologist. The data are recorded on paper data sheets and in a database.

These data provide geologic information, including generalized lithology, geologic age, and paleo-latitude and -longitude of geologic units, for the United States, Canada, and Australia, in an H3 Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) hexagonal format (Uber Technologies Inc., 2020) with an average hexagon area of 5.16 square kilometers. The data are presented as the shapefile version of ASCII data developed by Lawley and others (2021) for prospectivity modeling of basin-hosted Pb-Zn mineralization in the United States, Canada, and Australia (Lawley and others, 2022). References Lawley, C.J.M., McCafferty, A.E., Graham, G.E., Gadd, M.G., Huston, D.L., Kelley, K.D., Paradis, S., Peter, J.M., and Czarnota, K., 2021, Datasets...

These data present geologic map units for the United States (Horton and others, 2017; Wilson and others, 2015) and Australia (Raymond and others, 2012) reclassified to 31 generalized sub-type lithologic groups of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks (Lawley and others, 2022). These generalized classifications are based on interpretation of map unit descriptions in the different map compilations. Given that map unit descriptions often contain multiple rock types, there were subjective calls necessary when assigning generalized lithologic classification. The data were developed as part of the tri-national Critical Minerals Mapping Initiative (Kelley, 2020) between the United States, Canada, and Australia, an...

This part of the Data Release contains the water-quality data compiled and synthesized from various sources(including data from water-quality samples collected by the USGS in 2015 from 26 sites). This collection includes three main tables that contain (1) the list of site locations that water-quality data were collected, and information about those sites, such as the spatial coordinates of a well (Site_information); (2)the list of samples that were collected, and information about those samples, such as the date the sample was collected (Sample_information); and (3) the results of the measured constituent, and information about the result such as amount of concentration measured in a constituent(Water_quality_results)....

This part of the data release contains geospatial data collected and compiled during the Pecos River Basin salinity assessment of the Pecos River Basin from Santa Rosa Lake in New Mexico to the confluence of the Pecos River and the Rio Grande in Texas. Raster representations of horizontal extent, and depth below land surface to the base of sixteen Quaternary through Permian aged geologic units that underlie the Pecos River Basin are provided in image format. These units include: the San Andres Limestone; the Artesia Group which includes the Grayburg, Queen, Seven Rivers, Yates, and Tansill Formations; Capitan Limestone; Castile, Salado, and Rustler Formations; the Dewey Lake Redbeds; the Dockum Group (divided into...

A monitoring well was installed in the Wasatch aquifer in the Green River Basin, Sublette County, Wyoming in August 2015. Core collected during drilling activities was described to a depth of 170 feet. The data release contains a detailed description of the lithology and physical characteristics of the core sections, as well as numerous photographs. The data release was produced in compliance with the new 'open data' requirements as a way to make the scientific products associated with USGS investigations available to the public.

This data set presents the lithologic interpretation of rock cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. Continuous core from these boreholes was collected and visually interpreted to identify characteristics of the depositional environment of the mudstone. Three types of mudstone were identified: a black-fissile mudstone (BLK-FIS); a gray-laminated mudstone (GRY-LAM); and a gray massive mudstone (GRY-MAS). The BLK-FIS mudstone is associated with a deep-water depositional environment. The GRY-MAS mudstone is associated with a shallow-water depositional environment. The GRY-LAM mudstone is associated with a transitional depositional...

The Texas Water Development Board classifies the karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers as major sources of water in south-central Texas. To effectively manage the water resources in the area, detailed maps and descriptions of the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphic units of the aquifers outcropping in Hays County, Tex. are needed. In 2016 and 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Edwards Aquifer Authority, mapped the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers within Hays County, Tex. at 1:24,000 scale. These digital data accompany Clark, A.K., Pedraza, D.E., and Morris, R.R., 2018, Geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers...

In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed well SEP 16 (431900112593601) approximately 6 miles south-southeast of Big Southern Butte in Butte County, Idaho. The purpose of the well installation was to collect geologic, geophysical, and hydrologic data. On July 13, 2022, the USGS Idaho National Laboratory Project Office (INLPO) collected select geophysical logs within the cased well including natural gamma, neutron, neutron porosity, and gamma-gamma dual density logs. Gyroscopic deviation data were also collected during geophysical surveying to account for the horizontal and vertical displacement of the well. On...

In 2022, Cold Steel Mechanical, contracted by the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed twelve wells in Raft River Valley, Idaho. The wells were drilled using compressed air, dual rotary methods and were fully cased to completed depths. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected groundwater level and select geophysical data at each well between November 15th and 18th, 2022. Geophysical data were collected using Century™ multi-parameter logging probes and select logs are displayed in well log figures. Select geophysical logs include natural gamma, neutron, gamma-gamma density, specific conductance, and temperature. Geophysical data shown in well log figures were collected using the...
