This data release provides a generalized lithology look-up table for the lithogeochemical classification of Vermont's bedrock geologic map units. The table is defined from the mapped bedrock geologic units published by Ratcliffe and others (2011) and the generalized lithology of rock group A and rock group B for lithogeochemical classification as defined by Robinson and Kapo (2003). The 2003 classification was created for all six New England states and Vermont's geologic units were based on an older, less detailed, bedrock map of Vermont by Doll and others (1961). Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. Lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic observations for the unconfined aquifer of western Cape Cod are limited near coastal groundwater-discharge areas. In spring 2015, a 310-foot-deep boring was drilled and a well was installed to 100 feet below land surface to facilitate detailed study of aquifer characteristics along the southern coast of Cape Cod. All sediment samples from auger holes, outcrops, and cores are processed to determine texture. The 1-2 mm coarse sand fraction is packaged separately, and about half of these fractions are categorized lithologically by a glacial geologist. These data present geologic map units for the United States (Horton and others, 2017; Wilson and others, 2015) and Australia (Raymond and others, 2012) reclassified to 31 generalized sub-type lithologic groups of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks (Lawley and others, 2022). These generalized classifications are based on interpretation of map unit descriptions in the different map compilations. Given that map unit descriptions often contain multiple rock types, there were subjective calls necessary when assigning generalized lithologic classification. This dataset contains generalized lithologic classes (rocktypes) as reassigned from the USGS state geologic map compilation for the conterminous United States (Anning and Ator, 2017; Schweitzer, 2011). Lithology was classified into 12 generalized categories and assigned to the catchments of the NHDPlusV2.1 network as a fraction of the unit within the catchment.
This coverage includes arcs, polygons, and polygon labels that describe the generalized geologic age and rock type of surface outcrops of bedrock of the Australia and New Zealand area (Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tonga and Vanuatu; and portions of Indonesia, Papua New New Guinea and Solomon Islands). It also includes shorelines and inland water bodies.

In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed well SEP 16 (431900112593601) approximately 6 miles south-southeast of Big Southern Butte in Butte County, Idaho. Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response.
