The Dungeness Crab catch and effort grid dataset has been assembled directly from the Shellfish Stock Assessment harvest log database located at the Pacific Biological Station (PBS). The dataset has been modified to meet the sensitive nature of the data as per the Access to Information Act20(1)(b,c); which specifies that Fisheries and Oceans Canada will not disclose to a third party confidential information that may prejudice the competitive position of the fisher, in which fishing location has been identified as one of the entities to be protected. There was a 4km x 4km grid used in the desensitization process as well information was limited to total Effort (# traps and soak time) and total Catch (calculated lbs...

This dataset identifies the location of exploratory wells drilled off the coast of British Columbia. Exploratory wells are generally drilled as part of the exploration process to test for the presence of oil and gas reserves. It should be noted that data derived from onshore wells (not included with these data) are also relevant to the evaluation of the offshore potential.

Climate change is causing species to shift their phenology, or the timing of recurring life events such as migration and spawning, in variable and complex ways. This can potentially result in mismatches or asynchronies in food and habitat resources that negatively impact individual fitness, population dynamics, and ecosystem function. Numerous studies have evaluated phenological shifts in terrestrial species, particularly birds and plants, yet far fewer evaluations have been conducted for marine animals. This project sought to improve our understanding of shifts in the timing of seasonal migration, spawning or breeding, and biological development (i.e. life stages present, dominant) of coastal fishes and migratory...

Present power markets are designed for trading conventional generation. For wind generation to participate in a short-term energy market, lengthy wind power production forecasts are required. Although wind speed forecasting techniques are constantly improving, wind speed forecasts are never perfect, and resulting wind power forecast errors imply imbalance costs for wind farm owners. In this paper, a new method for minimization of imbalance costs is developed. Stochastic programming is used to generate optimal wind power production bids for a short-term power market. A Wind power forecast error is represented as a stochastic process. The imbalance costs resulting from this strategy are then compared to the case when...

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data of the nearshore region of the North Pacific show temperature ranges in degrees C using points whose locations correspond to the centroids of AVHRR Pathfinder version 5 monthly, global, 4 km data set (PFSST V50). The pathfinder rasters are available from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), hosted by NASA JPL. The data points in this dataset lie within a 20 km buffer from the GSHHS (Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline) coastline. The GSHHS vector data are available from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Furthermore, each point in the SST dataset is categorized by the ecoregion in which it is located. This...

The purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. The core field methods continue to be underwater videography and timed coral species inventories. Findings presented in this report include data from 109 stations at 37 sites sampled from 1996 through 2008 in the Florida Keys and 1999 through 2008 in the Dry Tortugas. The report describes the annual differences (between...

The Offshore of Point Reyes map area occupies the western corner of the triangular Point Reyes Peninsula and is about 30 km north of Bolinas and 50 km south of Fort Ross. The offshore portion of the map area is located within the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. The onshore part of the map area is largely undeveloped, used primarily for recreation and ranching, as well as oyster farming in Drakes Estero. The Point Reyes Peninsula is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The coast and shoreline are scenic and diverse, ranging from rolling hills and secluded sandy beaches surrounding Drakes Bay and Drakes Estero, to the steep rocky granitic promontories at Point Reyes headland, to the long, exposed...
