Otolith chemistry of fishes in Rodeo Lagoon, Marin County, California, 2016

The dataset includes multiple file types (CSV, ArcGIS shapefiles, and images), data relates to the elemental analysis of fish otoliths. Otoliths examined in this study were from randomly-sampled individual Tidewater Goby (Eucyclogobius newberryi) and Prickly Sculpin (Cottus asper) from the adult population of Rodeo Lagoon and Rodeo Creek, Marin County, California. The fish were collected in April and August 2016.

Summary of Stranded Southern Sea Otters, 1985-2018 (ver. 3.0, June 2021)

The southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), also known as California sea otter, was listed as threatened in 1977 under the Endangered Species Act. Since 1985, stranded otters from throughout their California coastal range have been collected and analyzed to inform resource management on recovery and conservation of the species. This data set is a complete 34 year compilation. Future annual stranding recovery information will be published when available. These data are a part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. The overall goal is to develop high-resolution (1:25,000) interpretive maps, based on multibeam sonar data and seabed sampling, showing surficial geology and seabed sediment dynamics. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the data collected will aid research on the ecology of fish and invertebrate species that inhabit the region. Targeted amplicon resequencing of chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 from tumor samples collected from Chelonia mydas (green turtle) inhabiting Hawaiian and Florida coastal waters

The files in this data release are the processed DNA consensus sequence alignment files for the chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV-5) genome plus 66 open reading frames representing protien-coding genes. DNA was extracted from tumor biopsies from green sea turtles (Chelonias mydas) with fibropapillomatosis sampled from Florida and Hawaii coastal waters. We used high-throughput short-read sequencing (Illumina MiSeq and Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine) of long-range PCR products amplified from tumor tissue using primers designed from the single available ChHV5 reference genome from a Hawaii green sea turtle. Literature Review of Lithophilic-Spawning Fishes Egg Collection Methods

Assessment of egg deposition is widely used to provide an index of spawning efforts for lithophilic-spawning fishes. However, little is known about the collection techniques efficacy and bias when collecting fish eggs. We conducted a literature review to assess egg collection methods and evaluate egg retention and capture on egg mats. The literature review provided a summary of different gear types used to collect fish eggs, possible bias from the gears, and egg 'abundance' reporting strategies.
