These data represent total mercury (Hg) concentrations and percent organic carbon in bed sediment from 51 samples collected at 44 location in streams and rivers during 2006 to 2015 within or near to Bad River Tribal lands. Reach lengths are provided when they were available, and the data set includes sieved, unsieved, and samples where sieving status was not indicated. Samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, or unknown collection agency. Neither bed sediment sample collection nor Hg analyses were performed by the U.S. Geological Survey, New York Water Science Center.

Methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (HgT) stable isotope measurements were made by the USGS Mercury Research Lab (MRL) in different organs on the Giant Petrels (Macronectes spp.) to examine internal mercury cycling in these seabirds. These data were collected as a compliment to x-ray spectroscopy measurements made by the University of Grenoble, France. The tissues and feathers of the southern giant petrels exhibit large variability in mercury-202 isotope values (δ202HgT), which are typically used to ascertain Hg sources in the environment. These values follow a pattern across all individuals based on tissue type: feathers (δ202HgT = 2.74 ± 0.16‰, n =5, mean ± standard deviation) > brain (δ202HgT = 1.09 ± 0.77‰,...

The data in this data release includes results from the analysis of water and fish from 76 sites in the Everglades National Park (ENP). Water and particulate matter samples were collected from 2008 to 2018 and analyzed for total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg). Filtered water samples were also analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), and major anions. Fish samples (Eastern Mosquitofish, Flagfish, African Jewelfish, Golden Topminnow, and Mayan Cichlid species) were collected from 2007 to 2018 and analyzed for THg and MeHg and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. These data are important for analyzing hydrologic and geochemical controls on MeHg distribution and production...

Fish collected for taxonomic and systematic purposes are often preserved and then archived in museum collections. Preserved fish are commonly first fixed in a formalin solution and then transferred to ethanol for long-term storage. The wet preservation method can potentially introduce mercury (Hg) contamination or unintentionally extract Hg from tissue. An experiment was designed to test the utility of museum preserved fishes in reconstructing spatiotemporal trends in methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and Hg stable isotope ratios, which is used to trace Hg sources to fishes. Wet preserved fish specimens from the Congo River and river basins within Gabon were subsampled from archives at the the Royal Museum of Africa...

These metadata provide data used to examine mercury and selenium concentrations in eggs of birds breeding in wetlands of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem, Utah, particularly at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Eggs were salvaged during 2010 - 2012 and include 33 species of birds. These data support the following publication: Ackerman, J.T., Herzog, M.P., Hartman, C.A., Isanhart, J., Herring, G., Vaughn, S., Cavitt, J.F., Eagles-Smith, C.A., Browers, H., Cline, C., and Vest, J., 2015, Mercury and selenium contamination in waterbird eggs and risk to avian reproduction at Great Salt Lake, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2015-1020, 164 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20151020.

We assessed total mercury concentrations in breast feathers of diurnal North American raptors collected at migration monitoring stations. We sampled raptor feathers from 9 species in the Pacific Flyway and compared species, sex, date, and flyway effects on mercury concentrations. We also explored year effects on 3 species of raptors in the Pacific Flyway during 13-years (2002-2014). Finally, we compared mercury concentrations in merlin among 4 continental flyways. These data support the following publication: Bourbour, R.P., Martinico, B.L., Ackerman, J.T., Herzog, M.P., Hull, A.C., Fish, A.M. and Hull, J.M., 2019. Feather mercury concentrations in North American raptors sampled at migration monitoring stations....

Eggshell thickness was measured at the egg equator and poles (sharp pole and blunt pole) for 12 avian species. Eggshell thickness was related to egg morphometrics (egg length and width), embryonic development, egg status, and mercury contamination. Individual eggshells each have up to 3 thickness measurements, linked by the eggshell identification. Each measurement has the corresponding egg length, egg width, egg status, mercury concentration, and nest identification. Additionally, eggshell thickness was measured at 5 equally spaced positions along the longitude of the egg (sharp pole, quarter egg, half egg, three quarter egg, and blunt pole) in a subset of Forster's tern (Sterna forsteri) eggs. These data support...

Heavy metal contamination (n=17 metals) of feather and tissue samples from live and deceased Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) was evaluated. Feathers taken from live birds are low in sample weight, therefore a novel method was used in feather sample preparation. Feather samples were then analyzed utilizing an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) assay. In addition, ICP-MS was used to measure heavy metal concentrations in feather and tissue samples from salvaged hummingbird carcasses. Iron, zinc, selenium and mercury concentrations were most commonly elevated in body feathers from live birds with mercury being the metal most likely to be found in elevated concentrations. Because of this, we conducted...

These data represent Hg concentrations in tissue from 104 analyses of fish samples collected at 7 sites in streams/rivers and lakes during 2004 to 2013 within or near to Bad River Tribal lands. Nine fish species are represented in this dataset. Most fish specimens were collected by the Bad River Tribe, but collection agency was not always indicated in source files.

The dataset presented here represents the concentrations and stable isotopic composition of gaseous mercury (Hg) for 31 sites across the United States. This national-scale monitoring effort was performed by the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) and the USGS over a two-year period (March 2016 - May 2018). The network includes a highly diverse set of sites ranging from remote (e.g. Denali National Park, AK and Mauna Loa, HI) to highly urbanized (e.g. Bronx, NY and Boston, MA). Air samples were collected using a custom designed bulk air sampler, in which air was pumped at approximately 1 L/min through particulate and soda lime filters prior to passing through two quartz tubes containing gold coated glass...

Laboratory experiments were performed between 2019 and 2020 to examine how dissolved organic matter (DOM) and phytoplankton (Raphidocelis subcapitata) cells alter mercury (Hg) uptake and isotope fractionation. Experiments were performed at ambient Hg to thiol ratios using natural organic matter isolates received from collaborators at the University of California-Davis. Two types of experiments were performed: (1) one set with SRFA isolates at two concentrations and Hg, termed uptake experiment, and (2) one set with DOM isolates, Hg, and cultured Raphidocelis subcapitata cells, termed sunlight exposure experiment. For additional experimental details, including culturing conditions, experimental set-up, and analysis,...

This dataset describes biomass and methylmercury concentrations in zooplankton, other invertebrates, fish, and coarse and fine detritus samples collected at the outflow locations of Brownlee and Oxbow Reservoirs in the Snake River Hells Canyon Complex. Based on the sampling locations, the sampled materials were presumed to have flowed through the dam turbines or over the spillway, thereby representing biological export from the reservoirs. Samples were collected biweekly at each location over a sixteen-month period, June 2018 – September 2019. Sampling and analysis methods are described in the Processing Steps section of the metadata.
