These metadata provide data used to examine tree swallow incubation behavior in relation to egg mercury concentration and maternal blood mercury concentration. These data were collected from tree swallows nesting in artificial wooden nest boxes at the Cosumnes River Preserved in California's Central Valley in 2014. Included are two datasets. One dataset provides daily incubation constancy (the proportion of the day the female spent incubating her eggs), the number of incubation recesses (breaks from incubating) taken by the attending female each day and the total mercury concentration of one egg from the female's clutch, and blood total mercury concentrations collected from the mother. Additionally, we include other...

An ecological study on mercury contamination in the wetland of West Dongting Lake in China. This study measured the total mercury concentration in the soil and compared it to the measured total concentration of mercury in the above and below ground tissue of different plant species on the floodplain of West Dongting Lake. Bioconcentration, bioaccumulation, and translocation factors were determined for each plant species at the nine study sites. Soil data on mercury concentration as well as moisture and bulk density was collected. Measurements of species richness, evenness and biodiversity were also calculated.
The "published" dataset includes 11,000 published measurements of sediment total mercury (STHg, nanograms per gram of soil, dry), bulk density (BD, grams per cm3 of soil, dry), percent of soil organic matter (%OM, loss on ignition, LOI), percent of soil organic carbon (%SOC, calculated using the Redfield's number), RHgC (Hg to carbon ratio), and age (YBP) from 13 published studies conducted throughout the arctic and subarctic.

Note: This data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9VO9WM7. The Hamilton Wetland Restoration Project (HWRP) is a joint venture between the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE; San Francisco District) and the California State Coastal Conservancy. The site is located on the property of the former Hamilton Army Airfield in Novato, California, along the western edge of San Pablo Bay, which is part of northern San Francisco Bay. The initial stages of wetland restoration, which included dredged sediment reuse, took place during 2009–2011. From 2011 until April 2014, the site was maintained as partially flooded through a temporary one-way culvert that allowed bay water onto...

This study was designed to examine mercury (Hg) stable isotope values in filtered water and suspended particulate matter from tributaries to the Snake River located in Oregon and Idaho. Water samples were collected from 21 tributary sites representing a range of watershed land use types (e.g., agriculture, forest, etc.) within the Snake River Basin. In 2018, water samples were collected at tributary sites near the confluence of the Snake River and at sites upstream higher in the watershed. In the 2019 and 2020, the tributary water sample collection was focused on downstream sites near the Snake River. In addition, from 2015-2018 Hg stable isotopes were also measured in air, bed sediment, and geologic material from...
Sediment samples were collected from mercury-contaminated streams and lakes in Texas, Virginia, and Tennessee and were analyzed for total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN). A portion of the sample was combusted at 550 degrees C for 2 hours prior to analysis to remove the organic carbon and nitrogen, thus giving total inorganic carbon (TIC) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) were calculated from these values.
This dataset includes field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, bottom water (sediment-water interface), surficial (0-2 cm) sediment, pore water (0-2 cm), and biota collected in Lake Combie, California, from September 2017 through August 2021. The study area includes six sites within the reservoir where discrete samples of surface water, bottom water, sediment, and pore water were taken along the length of the reservoir at the following distances from the spillway: 0.07 miles, 0.5 miles, 0.9 miles, 1.2 miles, 1.3 miles, and 1.4 miles. The within-reservoir sites were sampled during September 2017, February 2018, and May 2018, prior to a large sediment removal operation, and again during September...
This dataset includes data for water, sediment, and biota samples collected at 250 locations in the northwestern Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains during 1999–2012. The locations were chosen to assess potential effects from historical mining, with a focus primarily on mercury contamination associated with placer gold mines in the Sierra Nevada and the Trinity Mountains, and a hard-rock mercury mine in the Trinity Mountains. Trace elements and major elements were analyzed in selected samples. All analyses of mercury, methylmercury, and (or) trace and major elements in water and sediment were performed by U.S. Geological Survey laboratories. Biota samples (invertebrates, fish, and frogs) were analyzed for mercury,...
Total mercury concentrations were determined in hair and whole blood of raccoons and skunks in Suisun Marsh from 2016 to 2019. Individual skunks and raccoons were identified by a unique identifier (Animal_ID) and some animals were sampled multiple times. Adult walleye were caught in Fox River (Wisconsin) during April 2014. Age-0 walleye were caught in Fox River during October 2014. Total length, weight, age, and proportion of weight represented by water were determined for each of the walleye. Whole-fish homogenates were prepared during 2014-2015 and during 2017. Total mercury (HgT) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration, and mercury (Hg) isotope ratios were determined in the homogenates during 2014-2015 and during 2017-2018. All mercury determinations were made at the USGS Mercury Research Laboratory in Middleton, Wisconsin.
The data represent a shallow mercury chronology using sediment core from a playa lake system situated in a high-altitude setting in northwest Argentina. Archive samples were used from sediment core (LP07-1A) that was collected from a location (lat -22.362100°, lon -66.003600°) in the center of the playa-lake Laguna de Pozuelos in the dry season of 2007, when the water level was 2 to 3 cm. The samples were taken over 1 to 2 cm intervals and had been dried and homogenized. Sediment total mercury analyses were conducted by digesting sediment (0.30 g) in boiling concentrated nitric/sulfuric acid (ratio 3:1), followed by 12 hour oxidation with bromine monochloride, tin chloride reduction, gold amalgamation, and detection...
