This dataset contains reflectance and transmission spectra of unexpanded and expanded vermiculite ore, and handpicked flakes of phlogopite, hydrobiotite, and vermiculite. These samples were collected from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, Llano, Texas; and South Africa. Spectra are identified as either reflectance or transmission in the alphanumeric file names and correlate to specpr record numbers designated in the manuscript figures in which they are shown. These transmission spectra were converted to absorbance in many of the figures. Spectra of talc, fibrous richterite amphibole, and serpentine are from well characterized samples from Feiser Mine, Ruby Mountains,...

Data on gold deposits are extracted from an existing publication to enable analysis. The data comprise selected portions of a data set that are published by C.J. Hodgson in "Preliminary Report on the Timmins-Kirkland Lake Area Gold Deposits File," which is available online as a digital image of a report. As an image, the data set cannot be analyzed. Consequently, selected portions of the data set are re-published here in a text file. The datum for the latitude and longitude is not specified in the report and is assumed to be the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27). The Ontario Geological Survey, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ontario, Canada kindly granted permission to re-publish these data. Hodgson,...

Annual summaries of mineral extraction and exploration activities in Idaho and factors impacting these activities. Published and unpublished content. In 1975 Idaho Geological Survey, then named Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, began compiling annual summaries for use by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey annual reports after dissolution of the office of the Idaho State Inspector of Mines in 1974. These state data resources are generally more rich in content and context than federal summaries. As part of an ongoing project funded in part by U.S. Geological Survey and Idaho Department of Lands, data from these documents are being geo-related within the Idaho Geological Survey's Database of Mines and...

A mineral resource assessment for tungsten, a critical mineral commodity (see 'Related External Resources' section below) for the United States, was carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for a portion of the Great Basin region, in western Nevada and eastern California, between latitudes 36N and 42N and longitudes 116W and 120W. This study (Lederer and others, in review) integrates data from several sources, including geologic, geochemical, geophysical, remote sensing, watershed analysis, and mining with recently developed grade and tonnage models, expert estimates, and software tools and analyses to generate probabilistic estimates of undiscovered tungsten skarn resources. The assessment was conducted...

This folder contains descriptions and analytical data (i.e., electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, spectral reflectance, and scanning electron microprobe analyses) for unexpanded and expanded vermiculite samples. These data are provided for 52 samples of vermiculite attic insulation, horticultural products, aggregate, and packing materials derived from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, South Africa; and Jiangsu, China collected from 2000 to 2016. X-ray diffraction data for a limited set of the 52 expanded vermiculite samples are also given in figures included in the sample description pdf files. Quantitative XRD diffractograms are included for an ore sample from each...

This compilation contains a list of approximately 8,600 sites across the United States, Canada, and Australia where Zn-Pb-mineralized rock is attributed to basinal brine-related mineralizing processes, specifically assigned to Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) or clastic-dominated (CD) deposit types; a second group of 147 sites, classified as “unknown”, but which may have similar genesis, is also included. These sites were selected based on interpretations of 16 published databases, including the Mineral Resources Data System (USGS, 2016) and the Alaska Resource Data File (USGS, 1996) for the United States, and comprise a significant but not necessarily complete dataset. Each site is further classified by deposit type...

This collection contains rock samples collected in the 1980s to support USGS research regarding mineral deposits in the Challis Volcanic Field in Idaho. This research is described in USGS Bulletin 1658-A-S (McIntyre, 1983). Samples are stored in two cardboard boxes on a wood pallet.

Data are provide for four samples of unexpanded vermiculite ore from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, and South Africa. ASCII text files listings of Mossbauer data for each sample are provided in comma-separated by value (csv) files. These files have the file naming structure sampleid_mossbauer_spectra.csv, where sampleid is a unique alphanumeric code for each sample. These samples were chosen as representative of the ores from their various mine sources, having documentation verifying that they were collected directly from their sources.

Compressed file SedPbZn_Results_gdb.zip contains the analytical results of a geospatial analysis for identifying areas in Alaska that may have potential for sediment-hosted Pb-Zn (lead-zinc) deposits. The spatial analysis is based on queries of statewide source datasets Alaska Geochemical Database (AGDB3), Alaska Resource Data File (ARDF), and Alaska Geologic Map (SIM3340) within areas defined by 12-digit HUCs (subwatersheds) from the National Watershed Boundary dataset. An ArcMap mxd file, layer file, and geodatabase with cartographic layers is provided for users to view the analytical results in ArcMap. Additional files include FGDC metadata, a pdf showing the query parameters for the analysis, and a README file....

This collection consists of rock samples associated with the research of USGS scientist Alfred Miesch. Miesch was an early contributor to USGS geochemistry research and many of these samples are associated with his research. In 1953 Dr. Miesch began a 33-year career with the Survey. His work in Grand Junction, CO involved research on the distribution of minor elements in association with uranium on the Colorado Plateau. He moved to Denver in 1959 where he continued his work on element distributions in rocks, soils, and plants, ultimately becoming Chief of the Branch of Geochemical Census, which he later renamed Branch of Regional Geochemistry. In this capacity he began a working relationship with scientists in the...

Water and sediment samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at or near baseflow conditions from 2015-2017 in the East Fork South Fork Salmon River watershed near Yellow Pine, Valley County, Idaho. Soil, rock and tailings samples were collected in June 2015. Sampling focused on Cinnabar Creek, which flows through the Cinnabar mine site, and Sugar Creek, with additional sites selected to place the data into a larger watershed context. Grab samples were taken of the snowpack in January 2017. The water, soil, sediment, and rock samples were as described and the results are presented as separate water and solid data sets.

In response to Executive Order 13817 of December 20, 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) coordinated with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to identify 35 nonfuel minerals or mineral materials considered critical to the economic and national security of the United States (U.S.) (https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2018/1021/ofr20181021.pdf). Acquiring information on possible domestic sources of these critical minerals is the rationale for the USGS Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI). The program, which partners the USGS with State Geological Surveys, federal agencies, and the private sector, aims to collect new geological, geophysical, and topographic (lidar) data in key areas of the U.S. to stimulate mineral...
