Plant and soil data were collected in experimental plots in two sites ("Terrace" and "Hilltop") at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, and one site ("BSV") at Badlands National Park, South Dakota. At each site, 70, 2.5 x 2.5 m plots were assigned randomly to nitrogen-alone or nitrogen+water addition treatments (or no treatment for the control). Treatments were applied and data collected 2010-2013. The dataset includes six tables: (1) experimental treatments by plot and year; (2) plant and soil metrics analyzed in the larger work; (3) plant tissue and soil total carbon and nitrogen raw data; (4) plant biomass raw data; (5) canopy and ground cover raw data; and (6) canopy and ground cover codes.

These data were compiled in support of the 'Predicting the next high-impact insect invasion: Elucidating traits and factors determining the risk of introduced herbivorous insects on North American native plants' project, supported by the U.S. Geological Survey John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis. The project working group compiled data for non-native insects herbivorous on three or fewer North American conifer families. Data were synthesized from existing resources for a variety of insect traits, traits of their North American conifer host trees, divergence time between the North American host trees and the host tree in the insects' native range, and native insects that feed on the same North American...

These data were compiled to investigate the evolutionary history of Graham's beardtongue (Penstemon grahamii). Objective(s) of our study were to determine the evolutionary history of P. grahamii, including ancestral population sizes, the history of population divergences, and historical connectivity. In addition, we characterized population structure, genetic diversity summary statistics, and landscape factors influencing differentiation. These data represent anonymous loci sequenced from throughout the P. grahamii genome (specifically, .vcf and .structure files). Data in these files were manipulated to represent site frequency spectra between population pairs (.data files). These data were collected in 2019 from...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

Preserving native species diversity is fundamental to ecosystem conservation. Selecting appropriate native species for use in restoration is a critical component of project design and may emphasize species attributes such as life history, functional type, pollinator services, and nutritional value for wildlife. Determining which species are likely to establish and persist in a particular environment is a key consideration. Species distribution models (SDMs) characterize relationships between species occurrences and the physical environment (e.g., climate, soil, topographic relief) and provide a mechanism for assessing which species may successfully propagate at a restoration site. In conjunction with information...

We monitored Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, Sage-Grouse) nests and various habitat characteristics at the nest locations near Susanville in northeastern California, crossing over into northwestern Nevada. We employed a before-after-control-impact (BACI) experimental design to account for spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the system and to derive estimates of relative change in survival parameters. Sage-Grouse nest survival decreased after the Rush Fire but decreased more in the burned area relative to the unburned area. Although female Sage-Grouse continued to occupy burned areas, nest survival was reduced from 52 percent to 19 percent. Using a BACI ratio approach we found that nest survival...
THIS IS A HISTORICAL RECORD. As of December 17, 2021, the BISON application will no longer be available online and has been replaced by https://www.gbif.us. The BISON APIs are still available at https://bison.usgs.gov/#api and the Integrated Publishing Toolkit is still available at https://bison.usgs.gov/ipt. The USGS Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation (BISON) project is an online all-species mapping information system consisting of a large collection of species occurrence datasets (e.g., plants and animals) found in the United States, U.S. Territories, U.S. marine Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), and Canada, with relevant geospatial layers. Species occurrences are records of organisms at a particular...

These data were compiled to investigate the evolutionary history of Hilaria jamesii, Hilaria mutica, and Hilaria rigida. The data release consists of two tab delimited text files that may be used to infer population structure (viva_structure.stru) or relationships among sampling localities (viva.phylip). Files record genetic variation on an individual (.stru) or sampling locality (.phylip) level. These files may be opened and edited in a text editor program, such as Notepad ++ (PC) or BBEdit (Mac). The .phylip file can be uploaded to phyML or SVDQuartets to generate a tree-based visualization of relationships ( http://www.atgc-montpellier.fr/phyml/ or https://paup.phylosolutions.com, repectively). The .stru file...

This layer depicts the status, or degree of disturbance, to plant communities on the main Hawaiian Islands. Several layers were uset to create this version (v 3.4). The original HabQual layer was developed by Jon Price and Jim Jacobi based on the mapped land cover units from the Hawaii GAP analysis program (Gon et al. 2006). This map was revised by combining data on land use and the “Bare” category from the NOAA C-CAP 2005 map (NOAA National Ocean Service Coastal Services Center 2012), and adding road corridors to the heavily disturbed category based on the Tiger Roads layer (United States Census Bureau 2014). Additionally, corrections were made to this version of the map by visually inspecting previously mapped...

Description of Work The first objective of this project is to restore Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River through development of new and innovative restoration techniques and evaluation of multiple salmon strains to determine their suitability for restoration. A primary focus of Atlantic salmon restoration is to evaluate survival of new strains of salmon stocked into Lake Ontario. As part of this project, the Sebago strain is being stocked into the lake and other strains are being considered for use based on life history characteristics and egg availability. This approach includes acquisition of Atlantic salmon eggs, rearing of salmon to various life stages (fry, fingerlings, smolts), marking,...

Rasters representing Greater Sage-grouse (hereafter sage-grouse) habitat selection indices (HSI), habitat selection categories, HSI combined with space-use, and example management categories. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey, in close cooperation with multiple state and federal resource agency partners, sought to map sage-grouse distribution and produce example habitat designations in these states. Herein, we report results of our primary study objective, which was to map sage-grouse distribution and create example habitat management and priority designations, based on more than a decade of location and survival data collected from marked sage-grouse across the study region.
