This dataset provides the water-quality results for organic and inorganic concentrations analyzed from samples collected at residential tapwater faucets, sourced from private drinking water wells in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Samples were collected in July and August, 2018 from 20 locations. Samples were analyzed at various U.S. Geological Survey laboratories: the National Water Quality Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for organic compounds; the Redox Chemistry Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado for inorganic constituents; the Organic Geochemistry Laboratory in Lawrence, Kansas for microcystin analyses; and the Organic Chemistry Research Laboratory in Sacramento, California for disinfectant byproduct analyses. Additionally,...

Human footprints at White Sands National Park, New Mexico, USA, reportedly date to between ~23,000 and 21,000 years ago according to radiocarbon dating of seeds from the aquatic plant Ruppia cirrhosa. These ages remain controversial because of potential old carbon reservoir effects that could compromise their accuracy. We present new calibrated 14C ages of terrestrial pollen collected from the same stratigraphic horizons as those of the Ruppia seeds, along with optically stimulated luminescence ages of sediments from within the human footprint–bearing sequence, to evaluate the veracity of the seed ages. The results show that the chronologic framework originally established for the White Sands footprints is robust...

The design of this survey protocol is based on the indicator framework presented in Wall et. al (2017 https://doi.org/10.1175/WCAS-D-16-0008.1) and is intended to evaluate projects funded by Climate Adaptation Science Centers. All survey questions were optional to complete. The intended respondents are stakeholders who were engaged in the creation of scientific knowledge and tools during these projects. The questions cover three topical areas: process (engagement in the process of knowledge production), outputs/outcomes (use of information), and impacts (building of relationships and trust). Results of the survey are presented as summary tables in order to protect personal identifiable information of the respondents....

Karst systems are useful for examining spatial and temporal variability in Critical Zone processes because they provide a window into the subsurface where waters have interacted with vegetation, soils, regolith, and bedrock across a range of length and time scales. The majority of Critical Zone research has emphasized silicate lithologies, which are typified by relatively slow rates of reactivity and incongruent weathering. However, weathering of carbonate dominated lithology can result in secondary mineral deposits, such as speleothems, which provide a long-term archive for Critical Zone processes. Examination of carbon isotope variability in speleothems has the potential to provide records of changes in vegetation,...

To evaluate the ability of precipitation-based environmental DNA (eDNA) sample collection and mitochondrial 12S metabarcoding sequencing to reconstruct well-studied fish communities in lakes and rivers. Specific objectives were to 1) determine correlations between eDNA species detections and known community composition based on traditional field sampling, 2) compare efficiency of eDNA to detect fish biodiversity among systems with variable morphologies and trophic states, and 3) determine if species habitat preferences predicts eDNA detection. Fish community composition was estimated for seven lakes and two MIssissippi River navigation pools using sequence data from the mitochonrial 12S gene amplified from 10 to...
Transects in backwaters of Navigation Pools 4 and 8 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) were established in 1997 to measure sedimentation rates. Annual surveys were conducted from 1997-2002 and then some transects surveyed again in 2017-18. Changes and patterns observed were reported on in 2003 for the 1997-2002 data, and a report summarizing changes and patterns from 1997-2017 will be reported on at this time. Several variables are recorded each survey year and placed into an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheets are read with a SAS program to generate a SAS dataset used in SAS programs to determine rates, depth loss, and associations between depth and change through regression.

These metadata sets present the comprehensive geochemical composition of solid and water samples from the site of a 11.4ML (million liters) wastewater spill discovered in January, 2015. Analyses of a pipeline sample (analyses of select analytes), supplied by the North Dakota Department of Health are also included. The spill was near Blacktail Creek, north of Williston, ND. The leak was from a pipeline located approximately 70m from Blacktail Creek. The creek flows 17km before entering the Little Muddy River, a tributary to the Missouri River. The study included samples collected in waters upstream and downstream from Blacktail Creek in February and June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. These data sets include field...

This sampling frame is a set of grid-based, finite-area frames spanning the offshore areas surrounding Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and is intended for use with the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat). NABat is a continental collaboration including state and provincial, federal, and local agencies intended to standardize the collection and storage of bat data. Alaskan and Canadian waters are combined into a single grid. There are 5 grids in total: Alaska/Canada Offshore grid, Continental United States Offshore grid, Mexico Offshore grid, Hawaii Offshore Grid, and Caribbean Offshore grid. Grids boundaries are based on World Exclusive Economic Zone oceanic political boundaries and extend into the...

Though the primary sources of organic matter to soil are plant inputs, the role of microorganisms as mediators of soil organic carbon preservation is increasingly recognized in the context of biological contributions to long-lived soil organic matter. However, current knowledge of sub-soil processes is insufficient to model microbial-derived carbon flow particularly at depth. Using a previously studied paleo-marine terrace (90 ka) located just north of Santa Cruz, CA, we characterized for three depths in the soil profile (-25, -75, and -125 cm) the short-term (days to weeks) and intermediate-term (months to years) fate of some of the most dynamic components of soil organic matter pools, low molecular weight organic...

The late Pleistocene was a climatically dynamic period, with abrupt shifts between cool-wet and warm-dry conditions. Increased effective precipitation supported large pluvial lakes and long-lived spring ecosystems in valleys and basins throughout the western and southwestern U.S., but the source and seasonality of the precipitation are debated. Here we present stable carbon and oxygen isotope data from tooth enamel of late Pleistocene herbivores recovered from paleowetland deposits at Tule Spring Fossil Beds National Monument in the Las Vegas Valley of southern Nevada, as well as modern herbivores from the surrounding area, to investigate whether winter or summer precipitation was responsible for driving the wet...

This data record contains arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) operational taxonomic unit (OTU) occurrences in native prairie plant roots collected from remnant prairies and reconstruction of tallgrass prairies in Minnesota and Iowa, from April-December of 2022. The research aims to improve prairie reconstruction methods using AMF to improve prairie plant performance, species diversity, and resistance to invasive cool-season grasses. The data in this release includes 5 data sets. Three describe the AMF: 1) SampleID_and_OTU_readcount_tier2_data.csv provides the number of reads for each OTU identified in each sample; 2) OTU_assigned_taxonomy_FunGuild.csv includes a collated list of all the taxonomic guilds of the identified...

Breeding common loons for the movement and foraging pattern study were obtained from lakes in central and northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Both adults of a territorial pair were fitted with archival geolocator tags (Model LAT 2500; 34.6 x 8.3 mm, 4.4 g; Lotek Wireless Inc.). A combination of adhesive and plastic cable ties were used to affix the geolocator tag to a modified lock-on aluminum leg band. Tags were programmed to collect daily location estimates for up to two years, tag temperature (0.02o C accuracy, ≤ 0.05o C resolution) at 30-min intervals, and pressure data (±1% accuracy, 0.05% resolution) at 20-sec intervals during daylight hours to document foraging patterns...

Point transect distance sampling data were collected during the 2010 surveys of Alamagan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Data were collected at points along transects where trained observers recorded the detection type (heard, seen, or heard then seen) and horizontal distance (exact distance in m) from the station center point to individual birds detected during an 8-min count. To increase the numbers of detections, survey data from 40 detections from the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW; 2000) surveys of Alamagan, and 46 detections from Saipan surveys described in Camp et al. (2009) were added to this dataset. The count length of the DFW surveys was only 5 minutes; therefore, we included...
Three sets of standardized land cover/use data exist (1989, 2000, and 2010) for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) through the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program. These data provide the opportunity to detect planform change for two time periods: 1989-2000 and 2000-2010. This dataset identifies specific types of changes and addresses errors from potential sources in the overlay. Four of the change types will be reported on, while the others change types were retained in the derived data.

The development of a reliable method of age estimation for Grass Carp is necessary for the successful management of this invasive species. Multiple federal and state agencies with assistance from commercial fishers collected adult Grass Carp from 2012 to 2018. Ossified parts were collected from these fish, and age estimates from them were compared to develop an age estimation method. Here we provide the data used in that effort.

This data release links habitat assessment sites to both the NHDPlus Version 2 and NHDPlus High Resolution Region 02 networks using the hydrolink methodology. Linked habitat sites are those compiled by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) during creation of the Chesapeake Bay Basin-wide Index of Biotic Integrity (Chessie BIBI) for benthic macroinvertebrates (https://datahub.chesapeakebay.net/LivingResources). The data set contains a unique sample identifier created by ICPRB, survey program, coordinates of sample, linked V2 COMID and HR Permanent Identifier, and information regarding uncertainty in the attribution. We strongly caution the use of sampling points with attribution uncertainty...
