These data were compiled for a manuscript in which 1) we develop a water temperature model for the major river segments and tributaries of the Colorado River basin, including the Colorado, Green, Yampa, White, and San Juan rivers; 2) we link modeled water temperature to fish population data to predict the probability native and nonnative species will be common in the future in a warming climate; and 3) assess the degree to which dams create thermal discontinuity in summer in river segments across the western US. In this report, we evaluate this hypothesis for croaking gourami Trichopsis vittata, a non-native species that has established a reproducing population, but has not successfully spread beyond its very small (5 km2) range. We suspected the inability of T. vittata to colonize new habitats may be due to biotic resistance by the native eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki.

To determine if invasive annual grasses increased around energy developments after the construction phase, we calculated an invasives index using Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery for a 34-year time period (1985-2018) and assessed trends for 1,755 wind turbines (from the U.S. Wind Turbine Database) installed between 1988 and 2013 in the southern California desert. The index uses the maximum normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for early season greenness (January-June), and mean NDVI (July-October) for the later dry season. This dataset describes features of 2941 duck nests that were found in the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota during 2002-2003. Nest features include estimated initiation date, incubation stage and status as active. The dataset accompanies a scientific journal article describing an evaluation of the density and success of duck nests in conservation fields in 36 study areas that were seeded with native or tame grasses. These data were compiled as part of an ecological study of Sonora Mud Turtles and their interaction with non-native turtles at Montezuma Well in Yavapai County, Arizona. The data consist of observations and measurements of individual turtles captured during the study, and support analyses of population size and trends, general condition and health of the turtles, and female reproduction. The Black Acara, Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus 1758), first reported as introduced to Florida in 1965, is distributed throughout Florida’s southern peninsula. Examination of live and preserved museum specimens of acara reveal a second species, the Chanchita, Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel 1840) present in Florida since at least July 2000. A review of the relevant literature coupled with an examination of acara collected in Florida show the Black Acara and the Chanchita are most easily distinguished by number of anal fin spines, body and fin color, caudal fin pattern, and degree of pigment on the rim of the scales of the head and nape. The proliferation of non-native fishes in Florida is a serious problem, and new species continue to be introduced to the State. Herein we report the eradication of two species of non-native fishes in Miami, Florida (Giant Cichlid Petenia splendida and Blue Mbuna Labeotropheus fuelleborni; both Family: Cichlidae). We removed these fishes before they were observed in the extensive, interconnected canal system through which they may have been able to expand throughout south Florida and access protected areas such as Everglades National Park and Water Conservation Areas.

This data set includes riparian woody stem counts, stem densities and landscape variables collected at 28 sites along the South Platte River, Colorado, United States from 2011-2016. Riparian woody stem densities were collected in the field during 2011, 2015, and 2016, and include the species Ulmus pumila, Populus deltoides, Salix amygdaloides, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Elaeagnus angustifolia. For Ulmus pumila, data are included for total stem density and stem densities of three size classes: saplings, medium, and large trees. The Trojan Y Chromosome (TYC) strategy is a promising eradication method for biological control of non-native species. The strategy works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of supermales that guarantee male offspring.
Asian swamp eel, Monopterus albus/javanensis [Zuiew, 1973/Lacepede, 1800], has been established in the southeastern USA since at least 1994, yet little is known about its ability to survive low winter temperatures. We use standard thermal methodologies to quantify low-temperature responses and provide a detailed description of swamp eel reactions to cold temperatures. When exposed to chronic temperature decreases of 1.0 C per day, swamp eels ceased foraging at 15.0 C, markedly diminished movements below 11.0 C, and became incapacitated near 9.6 C. This dataset represents the locations of experimental plots that were used during the Phragmites Bioherbicide 2023 field experiment. To meet the criteria for selection, a site must have relatively dry soil with no standing water, have two or more large monotypic stands of Phragmites australis, and be easily accessible by vehicle. Experimental plots were created at these sites and one of four treatments were applied to each plot involving either tap water or bioherbicide.

Maintaining up-to-date information on non-native organisms’ distributions and species composition can be difficult, especially when species cross jurisdictional boundaries that require interagency coordination. Herein I report on the use of tools that have been used in Florida over the past seven years to assist with tracking of non-native fishes. Ten Fish Slams, where professional biologists and graduate students come together to sample an area for non-native fish, have been held since 2012, which have included nearly 100 individuals from 20 organizations.
