The data has been updated in January 2013 due to revised submissions from Montana and Wyoming's Buffalo Field Office as described below. This dataset represents the consolidated submissions for locations closed to oil and gas development data from BLM states responding to the WO 300 data call during the time period of November 2011 through May 2012. It is intended solely for use in the GRSG cumulative effects analysis. Source data, their acquisition methods and errors/omission rate vary. All original datasets used to create this dataset are stored in the BLM’s NOC E-GIS file structure. The paths to the original data are stored in this file’s attribute table. See the source data for detailed metadata and error analysis....

During hydrocarbon production, water is typically co-produced from the geologic formations producing oil and gas. Understanding the composition of these produced waters is important to help investigate the regional hydrogeology, the source of the water, the efficacy of water treatment and disposal plans, potential economic benefits of mineral commodities in the fluids, and the safety of potential sources of drinking or agricultural water. In addition to waters co-produced with hydrocarbons, geothermal development or exploration brings deep formation waters to the surface for possible sampling. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Produced Waters Geochemical Database, which contains geochemical and other information...

The east side of the northern Alaska Peninsula near Puale Bay and the Iniskin Peninsula of Lower Cook Inlet have long held interest to exploration geologists due to their well developed oil and gas seeps, which spurred on the first active exploration and drilling efforts for petroleum in Alaska. Several oil rushes occurred in the early part of 20th century, primarily in two phases (1902-1905 and 1922-1926) in the area of Puale Bay and Becharof Lake. Unfortunately all of these wells produced only traces of hydrocarbons. Several subsequent deeper wells were drilled in Mesozoic strata of this region and nearby Wide Bay to the south, but like the earlier efforts, did not prove to be economical. Each oil and gas seep...

This map shows the subcrop pattern of the Mesozoic rock units present at the top Mesozoic unconformity (also commonly referred to as the base Tertiary unconformity) in Cook Inlet basin, Alaska. The subcrop is projected onto the top Mesozoic unconformity depth surface of Cook Inlet basin, Alaska, published by Shellenbaum and others (2010). Publicly available geologic and geophysical data from multiple sources were collected, interpreted, and integrated into the subcrop map. Formation picks at the top Mesozoic unconformity were determined for 109 wells. Mesozoic horizons from two regional marine two-dimensional (2-D) seismic datasets (approximately 3,300 miles) were interpreted. Eight map units were established for...

The State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) and Division of Oil & Gas (DOG) are currently engaged in a multi-year study of the hydrocarbon potential of the Tertiary and Mesozoic strata in Cook Inlet basin. Modal analyses and routine core analyses were performed on Tertiary and Mesozoic siltstones and sandstones collected during the 2007-2010 field seasons from six geographic areas in upper and lower Cook Inlet. The reservoir quality of Cook Inlet sandstones varies widely depending on their mineralogy, geologic age, burial depth, and depositional environment. Tuxedni and Naknek sandstones have poor reservoir quality and are likely to be of equally poor quality down dip. West Foreland sandstones...

The State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is currently engaged in a multi-year study of the hydrocarbon potential of the Tertiary and Mesozoic strata in Cook Inlet basin. This report summarizes mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) data for 38 outcrop samples collected from the Tyonek, Beluga, and West Foreland Formations in the Tyonek and Talkeetna quadrangles. All samples were collected from measured stratigraphic sections. The Tyonek Formation samples have unimodal pore systems and the majority have well defined to sharp intrusion profiles. The Beluga Formation samples are characterized by unimodal pore systems and relatively broad intrusion profiles. The West Foreland Formation...

The Bakken Formation is a Late Devonian/Early Mississippian geologic formation that consists of three thin but laterally continuous members spanning portions of Alberta, Manitoba, Montana, North Dakota and Saskatchewan. The members consist of two shale layers confining a sandstone/siltstone layer which is the primary producing layer. In April, 2013 the USGS completed an assessment of the Bakken Formations showing it is currently the largest known continuous oil resource in the contiguous US (Gaswirth et al., 2013,http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2013/3013/fs2013-3013.pdf).

The boundaries illustrated by these Assessment Units are the result of geologic studies conducted by the World Petroleum Resources Project, 2009-2011 (Project). The boundaries were used to assess the oil and gas resources within the unit. An assessment unit, as defined by the Project, is a mapped volume of rock within the Total Petroleum System (TPS), sufficiently homogeneous in terms of geology, exploration strategy and risk characteristics to constitute a single population of discovered and undiscovered fields with respect to criteria used for resource assessment. Relatedly, the TPS is the essential elements and processes, as well as all genetically related hydrocarbons that occur in petroleum shows, seeps and...

The Williston Basin, in north-central United States and south-central Canada, has been a leading source of domestic oil and gas production for more than 50 years. This region, which includes parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, is currently in the midst of a modern energy boom driven by advances in oil and gas production technologies. The main energy-producing formations associated with the current boom are the Bakken and Three Forks. A portion of the Williston Basin is overlain by the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), which is known for its depressional wetlands that provide critical breeding and nesting habitats for a majority of North America’s migratory waterfowl as well as habitat...
