The international oil and gas industry has always required access to external capital -- debt and equity -- in order to finance growth and the development of oil and gas projects. Today the industry faces an unprecedented number of investment opportunities and demands at a time when internally generated cash flow, historically the primary source of capital for most companies, is depressed. The underlying premise of this paper is that while the capital requirements of the industry in the next decade are likely to be in excess of the US$1 trillion spent during the last decade, capital, both internally generated and from external sources, will be available. However, restrictions on the allocation and the cost of capital...

This data release contains groundwater elevation data and the associated model/code used to create groundwater elevation surfaces in and around select oil fields in California. The data and model provided here are intended to supplement interpretative manuscripts. Specific study areas will be added as Child Items found in this data release. Groundwater elevations are usually collected from individual wells at discrete times. However, we are often interested in looking at a continuous surface of groundwater levels for a variety of reasons including to examine potential gradients, or directions of groundwater flow. Therefore, we created continuous space-time models of groundwater elevations using a Gaussian process....

Oil and gas development in North Dakota is occurring at a rapid rate, and managers and biologists are ill-equipped to address and minimize damage from oil development and related activities on fish and wildlife habitat. This project aims to gather information on impacts to grassland birds from oil and gas development to better inform conservation managers. The 2012 pilot season was a success. Bird surveys were conducted at 18 oil wells and four control sites. Preliminary findings showed reduced densities of grassland birds near wells compared with away from wells, but the effect varied among species. Continuing work will strengthen inferences as well as attempt to assess effects on uncommon species such as Baird’s...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) compiled and digitized mud logs from oil and gas wells in the Oxnard Oil Field area. Scanned copies of the mud logs were downloaded from the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) online data and were digitized. Thirteen available mud logs associated with the Pliocene Tar Sand pool code (Vaca Tar Sand) were digitized. Mud-logging technology (mud logs) allows for identification and relative concentration measurement in parts per million by volume (ppmv) of light hydrocarbon gases (methane through pentane) occurring in drilling mud returned to the surface throughout the drilling process...

These data were compiled to measure airborne horizontal mass flux of sediments moved by wind across soils, climates, vegetation types, and land uses on the Colorado Plateau. Objectives of our study were to quantify spatial and temporal patterns in wind erosion and further our understanding of how soil and site setting, climate, and land uses are controlling wind erosion and horizontal mass flux. These data represent seasonal cumulative horizontal mass flux as measured using passive aspirated sediment traps, Big Spring Number Eight (BSNE) samplers. These data were collected in Grand and San Juan counties, Utah, and Mesa County, Colorado, USA between August 2017 and November 2020. These data were collected by the...

These data are a compilation of potential collocations between various lifeline infrastructure systems (transportation, water supply and wastewater, oil and gas, electric power, and telecommunications) components and their potential multi-hazard exposure resulting from the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. Existing hazard data (surface offset, ground shaking, landslide, liquefaction, and fire following earthquake) were combined into a single multi-hazard intensity surface developed for this purpose. Several combinations of potential collocations between various lifeline infrastructure systems components--all...

The State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is currently engaged in a multi-year study of the hydrocarbon potential of the Tertiary and Mesozoic strata in Cook Inlet basin. This report summarizes mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) data for nine outcrop and measured section samples collected from the Naknek Formation on the Iniskin Peninsula in Cook Inlet. All samples were analyzed by PetroTech Associates, Houston, TX. Two of the samples were found to have overall capillary properties that would make them moderately good quality, Type B seals.

This Raw Data File provides lithologic descriptions of core fragments recovered from a series of core holes drilled by Exxon (mid-80s) in the uplands bordering the Yukon Flats basin. In addition to descriptions of the material, the tabulated file includes geographic location, core hole numbers, an age estimate, core fragment depth, general lithology, grain size, and facies interpretation. The author examined these core materials in Fairbanks during winter and spring 2002. This work was done in preparation for an assessment carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey of undiscovered, technically recoverable hydrocarbon resources in the Yukon Flats basin.

The polygon (vector) shapefiles represent claim areas within Public Land Survey System (PLSS) sections aggregated by serial (claim) numbers with information about Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and mineral use authorizations for oil and gas. The land areas specified by BLM authorizations vary in size and orientation, and may cross one or more PLSS section boundaries. For spatial consistency, the information was aggregated to the square mile PLSS section boundary and by serial numbers. The original source data from BLM Cases Recordation database (LR2000) were specific to the day they were generated (March 6, 2016) and subsequent data pulls will likely be different.

Note: this data release has been superseded by a new version 3.0 published in 2023. Find the new version here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DSRCZJ. During hydrocarbon production, water is typically co-produced from the geologic formations producing oil and gas. Understanding the composition of these produced waters is important to help investigate the regional hydrogeology, the source of the water, the efficacy of water treatment and disposal plans, potential economic benefits of mineral commodities in the fluids, and the safety of potential sources of drinking or agricultural water. The U.S. Geological Survey National Produced Waters Geochemical Database v2.3 is an updated compilation of geochemical and related information...
