This data release contains several datasets that provide an overview of oil and gas well history and production of the United States, from 1817 to September 1, 2022. Well history data is aggregated into 1-mile and 10-mile squares indicating the total number of wells and counts of wells classified as oil, gas, dry, injection, hydraulically fractured, and/or horizontal wells. Well history is also separated into layers binned on 1-year increments from a well's spud date (date drilling commenced). Production data is aggregated in 2-mile and 10-mile squares that sum the total production of oil, gas, and water volumes. Production data is also separated into layers binned on 1-year increments to reflect the year of production....

Gas field infrastructure elements contributing to land disturbance located in four gas fields (Continental Divide – Creston – Blue Gap (CCB), Jonah, Moxa Arch, and Pinedale Anticline Project Area) in southwestern Wyoming were collected as polygon features in ArcGIS. Classes included four types of roads, well pads (active and abandoned), residual disturbance associated with the well pads, buried utilities, disturbances associated with non-well pad industry facilities, and areas of general disturbance associated with the installation and operation of gas wells not fitting one of the other disturbance class definitions.

The Wind River Basin is a large Laramide (Late Cretaceous through Eocene) structural and sedimentary basin that encompasses about 7,400 square miles in central Wyoming (fig. 1). The basin is bounded by the Washakie Range and Owl Creek and southern Bighorn Mountains on the north, the Casper arch on the east, the Granite Mountains on the south, and Wind River Range on the west (fig. 1). Many important conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources have been discovered and produced from reservoirs ranging from Mississippian through Tertiary in age (Keefer, 1969; Fox and Dolton, 1989, 1996; De Bruin, 1993; Johnson and others, 1996, 2007). It has been suggested by numerous authors including: Keefer, 1969; Meissner...

This dataset contains compositional data on 17 produced water samples from hydraulically fractured unconventional oil wells completed in the Middle Bakken and Three Forks Formations. The oil wells are located in five different wellfields across the Williston Basin. Specific gravity, conductivity, temperature, pH and oxidation-reduction potential for each sample was measured in the field. Ions (B, Li, Cl, Na, Br), biomarkers (Pristane /n-C17 and Phytane /n-C18), glycol ether compounds, major ions, as well as radium (Ra-228/Ra-226), boron (δ11B), oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δ2H) isotopic ratios were analyzed in the lab. Well profiles are provided to increase understanding of the produced waters compositions in the...

In 2013 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) drilled a continuous core in the southeastern part of the Wind River Basin, Wyoming to evaluate the source rock potential of the Lower and lowermost Upper Cretaceous marine shales . The well, named the Alcova Reservoir AR–1–13, located on the northeast flank of the Alcova anticline was spud in the lower part of the Frontier Formation and ended in the upper part of the Cloverly Formation recovered core between 40.5 feet (ft) and 623 ft. Thirty-nine samples were selected to evaluate the source rock potential of the marine shales in the cored interval as determined by total organic carbon (TOC) and programmed pyrolysis analysis. Five samples are from the lower part of the...

This dataset is associated with potential source rock samples collected from Uzbekistan. Borehole core samples, as well as outcrop samples, were collected by Uzbek GOSCOMGeology and the USGS in 2021 and 2022. Samples were sent to GeoMark Source Rock Lab for Leco total organic carbon content and HAWK pyrolysis analysis. Analysis results include percent carbonate (wt%), Leco TOC (wt%), and HAWK pyrolysis results (S1, S2, S3, Tmax, HI, OI, S2/S3 Conc., S1/TOC oil content, and Production Index).

Pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) are a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Wyoming. They are designated as such because they are sagebrush obligates and entrained in the health and intactness of sagebrush steppe landscapes. Southwest Wyoming, where pygmy rabbits occur, has become an epicenter of domestic oil and gas exploration and this activity contributes to loss and fragmentation of sagebrush habitats. This tabular file that was used for analysis contains the following data/information: survey site, plot, and gas field; pygmy rabbit occupancy status; UTM coordinates associated with occupancy (dithered to protect pygmy rabbits from further disturbance); an index value indicating amount of fresh pygmy...

The extensive development of oil and natural-gas resources in south Texas during the past 10 years has led to questions regarding possible environmental effects of processes associated with oil and natural-gas production, in particular the process of hydraulic fracturing, on water and other natural resources. Part of the lower San Antonio River watershed intersects an area of oil and natural-gas production from the sedimentary rocks that compose the Eagle Ford Group. The rapid expansion of infrastructure associated with oil and natural-gas production increases potential pathways for inorganic and organic contaminants to enter surface-water systems. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the San Antonio...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during October 2014 in a 553-square-kilometer area that includes the East Poplar oil field on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeastern Montana, USA. Data surround the city of Poplar and extend south into the Missouri River floodplain. Data were acquired with the SkyTEM301 transient electromagnetic helicopter-borne system together with a Geometrics G-822 magnetometer. The AEM average depth of investigation is about 80 m. The survey was flown at a nominal flight height of 30 m above terrain along north-south oriented flight lines; the majority of lines had a nominal spacing of 200 m with a sub-block area in the central portion of the oil...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...
