Improved Gulf Hypoxia Planning Tool: Landscape scale planning tools focus conservation priorities through a series of region-specific lenses. These tools include: CHAT; SECAS; Gulf Hypoxia Initiative - Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5; and landscape designs developed by the Great Plains LCC and Gulf Coast Prairie LCC. Discussions with industry, agency and organizational leaders across the mid-continent suggest that the time is ripe for opening a dialogue about how to bridge the planning between the west and east to find the appropriate stakeholder-driven set of mid-continent connections for a network of lands and waters. Construct enclosures at Columbia Mine to house approximately 60 turtles (translocated animals) that were collected off of the right-of-way for sections 2 and 4 of I-69. Monitor the behavior, survival and reproduction of trans-located box turtles during the captive phase of the new home-range adoption process. Determine the population and habit-use characteristics of the remnant, resident box turtle population at Columbia Mine. Determine the genetics profile of individual trans-located, resident and hatchling turtles and to conduct parentage analysis of hatchlings or eggs detected. Monitor the survival, movements and habitat use of post-release, trans-located turtles for 2 years post-release.

The Humboldt Bay-Eel River region may experience the highest rate of relative sea level rise increase along the West Coast. The Project will engage stakeholders to discuss community and science needs for planning and implementing adaptation measures to sea level rise. The Project is a critical step in developing an ecosystem based-management (EBM) approach to guide the protection, management, enhancement, adaptation, restoration, and possible redistribution of Humboldt Bay-Eel River Delta habitats under future climate scenarios. This process will be informed by the best-available science, the needs of Humboldt Bay-Eel River Delta agricultural producers, and other community members.

Climate change has become a serious threat across the U.S. and nowhere in the U.S. is this more evident than in the potential impacts to the species inhabiting the low-lying Florida Keys. Over 30 threatened, endangered, candidate and at-risk species occur in the Florida Keys. This project will conduct a synthesis of marine spatial data. An OPS staff will be hired to work with marine/coastal experts – to develop a Technical Advisory Group and gather data and input on the processes used in the marine assessment. Additionally, this project will identify key inland (terrestrial and freshwater) areas that currently have or may have in the future direct and indirect impacts on the health of the marine environment. Funding will be provided to Save the Bay, an organization based in Rhode Island that is developing cutting-edge runnelling techniques that are improving thousands of acres of marshes across the region. Save the Bay’s Restoration Director works with partners throughout the Northeast region, and regularly hosts partners in the field and via webinars to share tips and lessons learned on implementing these techniques. Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. This is a comma delimited text file of the bird observations for the Arctic Coastal Plain survey. These observations have undergone an extensive quality control process that is ongoing and corrected several errors in the source data. Point observation of birds are given in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326 and are accurate only to +/- 500m. The field "Year" gives the calendar year that the survey was flown, "Stratum" gives the transect density strata name, "NavTransect" gives the transect identifier used for navigation by the pilot (this is not necessarily the same as the design transect), and "Obs_Type" is the social group (single, pair, etc.) of the bird observation, "Num" is the number of observation of...

FY2017Increasing effectiveness of post-fire treatments is a management priority, such as is emphasized in Secretarial Order #3336 on rangeland fire and restoration, which prescribes a programmatic, longer-term approach that accommodates the layering of different treatments in sagebrush-steppe rangelands. The phasing of treatments by applying them in different post-fire years is an important part of wildfire response that, along with timing of livestock grazing resumption, likely affects overall project success - but is yet under studied. FY2016This project will develop a strategic approach for conservation of wet meadows and riparian ecosystems and the species they support that focuses on threats caused by natural and anthropogenic disturbance. It uses information on (1) the factors that affect wet meadow and riparian ecosystem resilience to both natural and human-caused disturbances at the scale of the watershed and meadow or riparian ecosystem, and (2) the distributions and population abundances of at risk species to determine focal areas for management. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS), has gathered available geophysical logs and related data from the USGS office archives in Arkansas and Tennessee as a basis for developing a hydrogeologic framework for the Southeast region of the United States. Similar efforts were undertaken by the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS) and the Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) Program. The logs compiled for these older efforts were difficult to access from the paper files; however, and partly because of this, older and newer logs were compiled into a single digital database for the current study.

This funding will be used to hire 1 GS 9/11 staff member to work directly with local governments (Soil & Water Conservation Districts) to enroll landowners in priority habitats in existing Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs) and in Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs) on their adjacent BLM allotments. Once enrolled, state and other federal funding sources are available to support sagebrush habitat enhancement projects that address invasive species, fire, juniper encroachment and other threats. The additional capacity is expected to result in an additional +100 landowners enrollments.
