A physiographically prominent, approximately 40 square km plateau lies roughly 20 km east of Mount Spurr volcano, northwestern Cook Inlet region, Alaska, and comprises the preserved remnant of a volcaniclastic succession, designated in this study as map unit Qvc. Although this readily mappable package of volcaniclastic rocks has been recognized in numerous studies during the past five decades, uncertainties regarding its age and origin have persisted. We describe the general characteristics of the volcaniclastic plateau, provide new age constraints for deposits, present lithofacies descriptions and interpretations of the volcaniclastic strata, and synthesize our observations and lithofacies analysis to propose an...

This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 quadrangles (500 square miles; equivalent to eight 7.5-minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the south of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle. This report includes detailed bedrock, surficial, structural, and stratigraphic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the report also includes derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards. The Tanana A-1 and A-2 Quadrangles and surrounding area comprise several isolated mountainous ridges in the western Yukon-Tanana Upland...

Clastic and organic sediments exposed in two stream cutbanks above modern timberline in the headwaters of the Henrys Fork drainage record multiple episodes of fluvial, lacustrine and wetland deposition. The location of the upper Henrys Fork at the boundary between modern summer-wet/winter-dry and summer dry/winter-wet precipitation regimes suggests that changes in vegetation during the Holocene were due primarily to variations in growing-season temperature. A radiocarbon date of 9310 6 70 BP on a Salix fragment from the base of one exposure indicates that the upper reaches of the Henrys Fork were vegetated by riparian willows by the early Holocene. Four other dates on wood and bulk organics ranging up to 4070 6...

Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) has conducted 1:63,360-scale geologic mapping of the Sagavanirktok B-1 Quadrangle (640 square kmequivalent to four 7.5 minute quadrangles). This mapping project reinterprets micropaleontologic correlations for 17 Sagavanirktok Quadrangle wells, and reprocesses data from the one publicly-available seismic line. Surface geologic mapping, subsurface-to-surface stratigraphic age control, and seismic framework are required to reliably decipher the complex geology of this key area of the Brooks Range. Outcrops within the Sagavanirktok B-1 Quadrangle are the closest surface expressions of Prudhoe Bay source and reservoir rocks. This study yields critical petroleum-related...
Fossil remains of Euceratherium collinum (extinct shrub-ox) have been found throughout North America, including the Grand Canyon. Recent finds from the Escalante River Basin in southern Utah further extend the animal's range into the heart of the Colorado Plateau. E. collinum teeth and a metapodial condyle (foot bone) have been recovered in association with large distinctively shaped dung pellets, a morphology similar to a ?Hershey's Kiss? (HK), from a late Pleistocene dung layer in Bechan Cave. HK dung pellets have also been recovered from other alcoves in the Escalante River Basin including Willow and Fortymile canyons. Detailed analyses of the HK pellets confirmed them to be E. collinum and indicate a browser-type...

Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) has conducted 1:63,360-scale geologic mapping of the Sagavanirktok B-1 Quadrangle (640 square kmequivalent to four 7.5 minute quadrangles). This geologic map was produced by merging a bedrock geologic map and a surficial geologic map of the Eagle A-2 Quadrangle. Outcrops within the Sagavanirktok B-1...

During 2006 and 2007 the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys conducted reconnaissance surficial-geologic mapping in segment 1 of the Alaska Highway corridor, which straddles the Alaska Highway through the Tanana River valley from Delta Junction to the eastern boundary of the Mt. Hayes Quadrangle. Surficial-geologic deposits were initially mapped by interpreting ~1:63,360-scale, false-color infrared aerial photographs taken in August 1980 and field verified in 2006-2007.

Alkenone data were extracted from core and outcrop samples from the Miocene and Pliocene of the mid Atlantic Coastal Plain. The Uk'37 index is used to estimate temperature and total C37 is used to estimate productivity. Planktonic foraminifer abundance's are provided for two cores.
