Album caption and index card: Brecciated rhyolite lava flows along the Firehole Canyon drive. As a lava flow moves outward from its center of eruption, a chilled crust develops along its upper surface and outer edges because of the cooler temperatures in those parts of the flow. Continued movement of the still-molten rock in the interior of the flow causes this crust to break up (brecciate) into angular blocks. The blocks are then tumbled along until the whole mass finally solidifies. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. 1970. Note: Photos sjr00645 and sjr00646 form a panorama.

Typed information on back of photograph: (Nile) 10/18/59. All taken from near the left hand white rock of #70 (nsw00070), looking toward the channel. Some show the mountain from which the slide came, but unfortunately the sun was in that direction all the time we were there. 79 and 80 (nsw00079, nsw00080) together are about the same as 75. 76, 74, 75 (nsw00074, nsw00075, nsw00076) make a pretty good panorama of the surface the slide came from, having been taken from the same spot. 77 (nsw00077) was from a slightly different place. Note: Forms panorama with nsw00075 and nsw00076.
