Hybrid sunflower production occurs near Sacramento in Northern California where seed treatments are commonly used. In this study, four locations were sampled in 2016 as matched pairs; half of each field was sown with thiamethoxam treated seed and half without. In addition to the thiamethoxam seed treatment, all seeds were coated with two fungicides, fludioxonil and mefenoxam/metalaxyl. Both wild bee and honey bee pesticide exposure was assessed by analyzing field soil, sunflower pollen and nectar, honey bees (pollen and nectar foraging) and a sunflower specialist wild bee, Melissodes agilis. Samples were extracted via pressurized liquid extraction (except nectar which underwent a room temperature solvent extraction)...

Alternative complement pathway assay data observed in adult largemouth bass plasma in response to an EE2 (17alpha-ethinylestradiol) or mixture of estrone and atrazine exposure under laboratory pond conditions, with associated fish identification information.
The National Water Quality Network (NWQN) for Rivers and Streams includes 110 surface-water river and stream sites monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Program, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project. The NWQN includes 20 large river coastal sites, 41 large river inland sites, 30 wadeable stream reference sites, 10 wadeable stream urban sites, and 9 wadeable stream agricultural sites. In addition to the 110 NWQN sites, 36 sites from the USGS Cooperative Water Program are also included in this data release. This data release provides streamflow, nutrient, pesticide and sediment data collected and analyzed by NWQN and other historical water-quality networks from 1950-2022....

These data represents annual estimates of neonicotinoid nitroguanidine group insecticide application rates across the western conterminous United States from 2008 to 2014. This product contains seven raster layers (appearing as separate bands in a multi-band raster). Each band represents one year of the data beginning in 2008. Estimates are generated by pairing crop specific application rates of neonicotinoids with fine scale crop data obtained from the CropScape cropland data layer. Application units are kilograms per hectare. Further details on the methods used to generate this product are described in: Douglas, M.R., Baisley, P., Soba, S., Kammerer, M., Lonsdorf, E.V. and Grozinger, C.M., 2022. Putting pesticides...
Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) samples were collected from marshes on five different keys (Big Pine, Torch, Ramrod, Cudjoe, and Sugarloaf Keys) within National Key Deer Refuge in January and June of 2015 and analyzed for contamination by the mosquito control insecticide permethrin. Permethrin was detected on 17 of 57 samples collected in January while it was detected on 40 of 56 samples collected in June. The concentrations on samples collected in January (below detection to 16 ng/g ww) were lower than concentrations on samples collected in June (below detection to 57.7 ng/g).
The U.S. Geological Survey New Jersey Water Science Center (USGS NJWSC) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has assembled this data release in support of ongoing USGS and NJDEP evaluations related to the occurrence and distribution of elevated trace elements, particularly arsenic (As) and vanadium (V), in Inner Coastal Plain soils and sediments of New Jersey. The data for four sediment cores are presented, and the data types include: 1. Site locations and general characteristics for the four sediment cores collected during the study; 2. Lithologic descriptions of each sediment core; 3. Portable handheld X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data for each sediment core (every 6...

A multiresidue method for solids (i.e., soil, sediment, sludge) was developed and evaluated for the analysis of pesticides and pesticide degradates. Initially, a well characterized soil was used to determine the recovery of target compounds using an Energized Dispersive Guided Extraction (EDGE) system with two extraction solvents, acetonitrile and 1:1 (v/v) hexane:acetone. Extracts were cleaned using solid-phase extraction (SPE) with graphitized carbon cartridges and three elution solvents, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, and 1:1 (v/v) dichlormethane:ethyl acetate. The individual SPE elutions from the two extraction solvents were analyzed separately via GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS for 210 pesticides and pesticide transformation...

This dataset contains data in support of a study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to describe water-quality characteristics of the Red River of the North and tributaries prior to construction of the Flood Risk Management Project in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. This dataset contains bacteria data for ten sites supplied by the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, pesticide data for five sites supplied by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, results from quality control samples collected at ten sites by the USGS as well as files necessary to run loads for ten sites and seven constituents published in U.S. Geological Scientific Investigations...
A National Park Service Partnership Program project was conducted in 2017 - 2019 on water quality parameters up-stream and downstream of a confined animal feeding operation on a Buffalo National River tributary (Big Creek). Monthly, over a period of 20 months, patterns of nutrients in water (nitrogen and phosphorus), periphyton (chlorophyll a and algal assemblages), and bacterial responses (viable bacterial densities, total bacterial counts, and live bacterial metabolic activity) were measured at six sites along Buffalo National River. Heterotrophic bacteria were concentrated from the water samples. The metabolic activity of heterotrophic bacteria was determined by fluorescent staining of enzyme (esterase) activity...

Data in this release were collected and computed to evaluate the occurrence of pesticides in shallow groundwater in the state of Alabama. Additionally, these data support interpretation in Gill (2023) for a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. During 2009-2020, samples were collected from twenty-four wells located near agricultural land use in Alabama and evaluated for concentrations of agricultural pesticides and pesticide degradates. Most data produced from the sampling effort are available from the publicly accessible USGS National Water Information System (NWIS; U.S. Geological Survey, 2023). For certain pesticide compounds, data were...
Applications of pesticides in agricultural and urban settings play an essential role in increasing crop yields, preserving food and materials, reducing pest-borne diseases, and eradicating or deterring pests. Pesticides are transported from their point of application to environmental media, including surface water. To better understand the fate of fate and transport of pesticides in the environment, analytical methods are necessary to measure pesticides in waters. Herein, a method is described for the extraction and analysis of pesticides and pesticide degradates in filtered surface water and paired suspended sediment samples. Water samples (~ 1 L) are filtered using 0.7 μm glass-fiber filters prior to being extracted...

Legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) were assessed in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) tissue and diet samples from three drainages in the Milwaukee Estuary, Wisconsin to understand exposures and possible effects.
This data release includes datasets provided by the Woolnough Laboratory at Central Michigan University. These data were collected as a part of a laboratory exposure experiment, conducted in 2018, examining the effects of agricultural and urban contaminant mixtures on two life stages (larval and juvenile) of the freshwater mussel, plain pocketbook (Lampsilis cardium), using largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) as the host fish. Contaminant mixtures were representative of contaminants frequently detected in agricultural and urban settings. Agricultural contaminant mixtures consisted of bromacil, estrone, metolachlor, tri(butoxyethyl) phosphate, 4-nonylphenol, atrazine, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), and bisphenol...
