This shape file depicts the location of current easements on tide and submerged land issued by the State of Alaska. This dataset may be of interest to the conservation community because it contains areas that may be subject to some level of disturbance to or alteration of native vegetation or biotic community under the activities defined for this easement. Each location is represented as a linear feature and has an associated Land Administration System (LAS) file-type and file-number which serves as an index to associated LAS case-file information. Tidal easement features were converted from the digital (ArcInfo) files used to produce the state status plats. Additional LAS case-file and customer information may...

Order limiting mineral entry on state land to leasehold locations and prohibiting new mining claims. Unlike a mining claim, a leasehold location must be converted to a lease before mining is allowed. This dataset represents mineral leaseholds represented as lines. This shape file characterizes the geographic representation of land parcels within the State of Alaska contained by the Leasehold Location category. It has been extracted from data sets used to produce the State status plats. This data set includes cases noted on the digital status plats up to one day prior to data extraction. Each feature has an associated attribute record, including a Land Administration System (LAS) file-type and file-number which...

A water right is a legal right to use surface or ground water under the Alaska Water Use Act (AS 46.15). A water right allows a specific amount of water from a specific water source to be diverted, impounded, or withdrawn for a specific use. When a water right is granted, it becomes appurtenant to the land where the water is being used for as long as the water is used. If the land is sold, the water right transfers with the land to the new owner, unless the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approves its separation from the land. In Alaska, because water wherever it naturally occurs is a common property resource, landowners do not have automatic rights to ground water or surface water. For example, if a farmer...

A reservation of water for in-stream use is a water right that protects specific in-stream water uses, such as fish spawning or recreation. It sets aside the water necessary for these activities and keeps later water users from appropriating water that may affect the in-stream activity. This dataset includes those features that are represented by lines. This dataset includes additional information extracted from the Alaska Land Administration System by the Conservation Biology Institute. Water can be reserved for one or more permissible uses on a particular part of a stream or lake during a certain period of time. Under AS 46.15.145, permissible in-stream uses include: Protection of fish and wildlife habitat, migration,...

Alaskan Offshore Mining Leases and Prospecting Permits for locatable or potential locatable minerals on state-owned tide and submerged lands are offered for issuance if the DNR conducts a Disposal of Interest for a specific offshore area. If known locatable mineral deposits exist, the DNR conducts a competitive offshore lease disposal, otherwise a noncompetitive offshore prospecting permit disposal is held. Leases are issued for variable terms, up to indefinite if activity is occurring, and offshore prospecting permits are issued for a term of 10 years as long as adequate prospecting work in done each year. Permit acreage may be converted to lease at any time during the 10 years if workable mineral deposits are...

Alaskan Mining Claims are for acquiring locatable mineral rights which have been discovered. They may be 40 acres or 160 acres in size and remain "active" so long as rent is timely paid and annual labor requirements are met. Claims may be converted or required to be converted to Upland Mining Lease before minerals can be extracted if other resources are affected. Before locatable minerals can actually be mined, a mining permit application (Annual Placer Mining Application (APMA) or plan of operation and reclamation plan) must be filed and approved. This shape file characterizes the geographic representation of land parcels within the State of Alaska contained by the State Mining Claim category. It has been extracted...

These data are an extraction of the "dominant' fishing data from the California Ocean Uses dataset. For the full dataset please visit, http://www.mpa.gov/dataanalysis/atlas_ca/. The California Ocean Uses Atlas Project is an innovative public-private partnership between NOAA's Marine Protected Areas Center and Marine Conservation Biology Institute . Funded by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation , the Atlas project fills a critical information gap in ocean management by mapping, for the first time, the full range of significant human uses of the ocean in state and federal waters of the coast of California. Spatial data for nearly 30 ocean uses were gathered through...

Coastal wetland ecosystems are expected to migrate landward in response to accelerated sea-level rise. However, due to differences in topography and coastal urbanization extent, estuaries vary in their ability to accommodate wetland migration. The landward movement of wetlands requires suitable conditions, such as a gradual slope and land free of urban development. Urban barriers can constrain migration and result in wetland loss (coastal squeeze). For future-focused conservation planning purposes, there is a pressing need to quantify and compare the potential for wetland landward movement and coastal squeeze. For 41 estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico (i.e., the USA gulf coast), we quantified and compared...
