This data release includes data and metadata on tree and shrub basal area as well as bird-mediated and passive seed rain for sites selected to have a range of understory cover under canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa). It also includes seedling germination and survival data for a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration.
This data release includes data and metadata on 1) avian diet 2) seed rain 3) understory plant composition 4) seedling abundance and 5) sampling locations for these sites. In addition it includes data on seedling abundance, grass cover and light levels for a grass removal/seed addition experiment . All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. Most of this study was done with sampling, however we also implemented an experiment in which we manipulated grass biomass and seed addition to specifically ask how these factors limit native...
This data release includes data and metadata on soil total (organic and inorganic) carbon, total nitrogen, organic matter, moisture and foliar carbon and nitrogen of dominant plants within Keamuku Maneuver Area (KMA) on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at how microtopography and biotic interactions influence post-disturbance recovery and native planting success in native shrub-dominated and non-native, invasive grass-dominated dryland habitats.
This data release includes data and metadata on 155 vegetation plots that were random stratified across different substrate ages and geological features at Keamuku Maneuver Area (KMA) on Hawaii Island in order to capture vegetation patterns across the landscape in relation to geology and climate. This data set also includes coordinates for the plots and geological data. This data was also used to determine dominant vegetation types across KMA.
This data release includes data and metadata on post-disturbance native shrub recruitment and survival within recovering vegetation after disturbance for sites within Keamuku Maneuver Area on Hawaii Island. This study looked at how microtopography and biotic interactions influence post-disturbance recovery in native shrub-dominated and non-native, invasive grass-dominated dryland habitats.

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. This data, in particular, focuses on the basal area of different species of fruiting plants within 20m of all of the seedrain traps.

This data includes plot location, elevation, canopy density, canopy species, and char height for each plot that was surveyed for this study. All plots were located in the burn scar of the 2018 Keauhou Fire in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, in the area known as the "Mauna Loa strip", located on the south flank of Mauna Loa.

This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates, foliar nitrogen and carbon, grass biomass, soil nitrogen and carbon, and native outplant survival rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.
This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates of the two dominant canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa) in a restoration forest in Hawaii.

This data release includes data and metadata on seedling counts for native woody species, for plots that were established to monitor the efficacy of post-fire seed addition in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawaiʻi. All plots were located in the burn scar of the 2018 Keauhou Fire in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, in the area known as the "Mauna Loa strip", located on the south flank of Mauna Loa.
Broom snakeweed (snakeweed) is an aggressive native range-weed found throughout arid and semiarid areas of the western United States, that increases following disturbances such as overgrazing, drought, or wildfire. Ecologically based strategies that include controlling snakeweed and reestablishing desirable herbaceous species are needed to restore productivity and diversity to invaded areas. The objective of this study was to compare the ability of selected introduced and native grass species and prostrate kochia (kochia) to prevent reinvasion of snakeweed, downy brome, and annual forbs following control. This field study was replicated at two sites (Howell and Nephi, Utah) within the sagebrush-steppe biome. Snakeweed...

This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents survival of endangered Portulaca sclerocarpa, percent cover of vegetation surrounding Portulaca sclerocarpa, as well as soil depth and soil temperature. All data were taken between 2011-2021 in the Puhimau Geothermal Area in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
This data release includes data and metadata on a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Specifically this data decribes the percent cover of grass over time in plots where we experimantally added varying levels of seed rain and/or manipulated grass biomass manually.
This data release includes data and metadata on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in sites where litter was experimentally manipulated.

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Quantifying natural seed rain rates in different habitat types was needed to better understand how these thresholds function.
This data release includes data and metadata for native outplant growth rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival and growth with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.
In desert ecosystems a large proportion of water and nitrogen is supplied in rain-induced pulses. It has been suggested that competitive interactions among desert plants would be most intense during these pulse periods of high resource availability. We tested this hypothesis with three cold desert shrub species of the Colorado Plateau (Gutierrezia sarothrae, Atriplex confertifolia, and Chrysothamnus nauseosus), which differ in their distribution of functional roots. In a three-year field study we conducted a neighbor removal experiment in conjunction with simulated 25-mm precipitation events and the addition of a nitrogen pulse in either spring or summer. We measured predawn water potential (?), gas exchange, leaf...
