This is the evaluation data associated with the project: “Status and Trends of Deciduous Communities in the Bighorn Mountains”. The aim of the study is to assess the current trends of deciduous communities in the Bighorn National Forest in north-central Wyoming. The data here represents phase I of the project, completed in FY2017. The USGS created a synthesis map of coniferous and deciduous communities in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming using a species distribution modeling approach developed in the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI) (Assal et al. 2015). The modeling framework utilized a number of topographic covariates and temporal remote sensing data from the early, mid and late growing season to...

Plant cover data were collected in experimental plots at two sites, one at Badlands National Park, South Dakota, and one at Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska. At each site, 40 50 x 50 m plots were assigned randomly to one of the following treatments: control (no action), burn-only (prescribed fire in fall 2016), burn+herbicide (prescribed fire followed by imazapic application in fall 2016), and burn+seed (prescribed fire followed by drilling native grass seed in fall 2016). Pre-treatment data were collected in 2015, and post-treatment data were collected in 2017 and 2018. The dataset includes four tables: (1) plant cover and species richness metrics analyzed in the larger work; (2) plant canopy cover data...

This dataset represents the locations of experimental plots that were used during the Phragmites Bioherbicide 2023 field experiment. To meet the criteria for selection, a site must have relatively dry soil with no standing water, have two or more large monotypic stands of Phragmites australis, and be easily accessible by vehicle. Experimental plots were created at these sites and one of four treatments were applied to each plot involving either tap water or bioherbicide.

U.S. Geological Survey decision analysts and technical experts worked with managers and stakeholders to predict the consequences of alternative actions following environmental DNA detections of invasive Najas minor eDNA in Sebago Lake, Maine, USA. This dataset provides the consequence and model inputs for each of the alternative actions under different levels of uncertainty.
This model was constructed to model the risk of invasion by exotic plant species. Roads may directly influence exotic plant dispersal via disturbance during road construction or via alterations in soil regimes. For example, in Californian serpentine soil ecosystems, exotic plant species can be found up to 1km from the nearest road and Russian thistle (Salsola kali), an exotic forb growing along roads, is wind-dispersed over distances greater than 4km. Roads may also indirectly facilitate the dispersal of exotic grasses, such as crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), via human seeding along road verges or in burned areas near roads as a management strategy to curb the establishment of less desirable exotic grass...

These data (all data tables for the data release) represent a suite of biotic and abiotic variables that characterized plant communities and the geologic, geomorphic, edaphic, climatic, and land use history context in which distinct plant communities occur. In 2009, the National Park Service's Inventory and Monitoring program for the Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) began measuring vegetation cover and site characteristics at monitoring plots stratified across different vegetation types within national parks on the Colorado Plateau. NCPN biologists remeasured vegetation cover at these plots in a rotating panel over the following decade. In 2019, U. S. Geological Survey geologists and soil scientists collected/compiled...

These data were collected to evaluate if arrowweed (Pluchea sericea) individuals and genotypes collected from across a 5.3 degree Celsius temperature gradient and grown in a common greenhouse environment had different physiological and morphological responses to inundation. The objectives of the study were to assess if 1) individuals from climatically different provenances differ in their morphological and physiological phenotypes, 2) individuals from climatically different provenances differ in their response to inundation, and 3) phenotypes and inundation responses are partially controlled by genotype. These data represent measurements made on 248 plants that were grown in a greenhouse and, also in a greenhouse...

The St. Clair River delta, part of the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS), is the most fished coastal wetland area in the Laurentian Great Lakes and provides nursery habitat for a variety of fish species; however, few large-scale surveys of early fish life stages have been performed since the 1980s. Larval fish, zooplankton, and aquatic plants were sampled at 21 sites in delta channels and backwaters of the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS; USA/CAN) from May to July in 2010 and 2011 to characterize the habitats and resources used by larval fish in the delta. Larval fish were captured using conical nets and light traps, and diets from larval white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) were collected at three sites.

Nonnative Phragmites australis (common reed) is widely distributed across North America and insufficient knowledge of P. australis has impeded the efficiency of management. To aid in Phragmites management and future studies, we used RNA-seq data from multiple types of plant tissue to construct forty-nine P. australis transcriptomes via different assembly tools and multiple parameter settings, resulting in seven assembled transcriptomes for further comprehensive assessments. The optimal transcriptome (“cd-hit”) was selected for functional annotation and downstream analyses. This data release contains the seven assembled transcriptomes, and data derived from the optimal transcriptome (functional annotations, tissue-specific...

Plant roots have the best-understood mutualisms with microbes, but leaf and bract cell endosymbiosis have not been previously reported. Leaf and bract cells of more than 30 species in 18 families of seed plants were surveyed for the presence of intracellular bacteria and several experiments were designed to find and analyze nutrient exchanges between bacteria and plant cells. This dataset contains the results of 1) histochemical analyses to detect hormones, superoxide, and nitrogenous chemicals around bacteria within plant leaf and bract cells, 2) experiments to assess the differential absorption of isotopic nitrogen into plants, and 3) genetic analysis of bacteria isolated from plant material.
