This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. This metadata record contains 6 tables used to assess sources of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) in the Back River watershed, Baltimore City, Maryland. Included in the dataset are PCB concentrations of surface water and porewater passive samplers from Herring Run, Moores Run, tidal Back River, and Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant; PCB concentrations of bed sediments and other solids, Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) samples, and road sediments; dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS), and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations of grab samples; and PCB concentrations of passive samplers from pump stations collected in 2018-2020.

Adult walleye (10 females and 10 males) were caught in Fox River (Wisconsin) during April 2014. Total length, weight, and age were determined for each of the walleye. Whole-fish homogenates were prepared during 2017. Lipid concentration and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener concentrations were determined in each of the homogenates during 2017-2018. For each sample, PCB congener concentrations were summed to yield total PCB concentration. All lipid and PCB congener terminations were made at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Water-borne polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were sampled in three tributaries of the Niagara River Area of Concern (AOC) in 2018 and 2019 using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs). This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts, focused on determining the presence and distribution of total and congener PCBs in these tributaries.

We measured polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in two taxa of riparian spiders from nine sites in 2011 at the Ashtabula River Area of Concern. We analyzed the extracts for 122 congeners following EPA method SW846 Method 8270D using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in the selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode. All target compounds were quantified using the method of internal standards, and all results were reported in ng/g (parts per billion) wet weight. The National Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (NCBP), which was developed and maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), monitored concentrations of environmental contaminants in freshwater fish over a period of about 20 years.
