Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2...

The data include soil texture, soil-water, and estimated soil strength properties for soil map units and from geotechnical investigations of landslide areas affecting highways in the municipalities of Lares, Naranjito, and Utuado, Puerto Rico. The map units are derived from published soil mapping (https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/app/) and have been grouped by municipality, Unified Soil Classification System symbol, and order-of-magnitude ranges of hydraulic conductivity to create generalized map units for assigning soil-water parameters and soil-strength parameters. Each group (generalized unit) includes one or more soil map units. The groups are numbered sequentially from one (1) for each municipality with...
Boreholes were drilled in 2017 and 2018 in Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by mineralized and hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Site locations and drilling procedures are documented under the main page of this data release. Borehole geophysical data were collected in boreholes MW1, MW1UZ, and MW2.1 as open holes prior to well construction. Logging was performed by a combination of USGS and Mount Sopris Instruments (MW1) and University of Wyoming (MW1UZ and MW2.1) staff. Log types vary by well on the basis of available equipment, site limitations, and borehole conditions. In borehole MW1, log types include fluid temperature and conductivity,...

Four boreholes (MW1, MW1UZ, MW2, MW2.1) were drilled in the fall of 2017 and summer of 2018 in upper Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The boreholes were continuously cored using a wireline HQ-sized coring system and sample a combination of Quaternary-aged surficial colluvium and the Cretaceous-aged Mesaverde Formation. In-situ injection-based hydraulic tests were performed in MW1 and MW2 during drilling while advancing using a single-packer apparatus in tandem with an in-line flow meter and interval pressure monitoring. Borehole geophysical logging was performed in MW1, MW1UZ, and MW2.1 in the...

Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Sedimentological and geotechnical characterization of the cores was carried out through whole core imaging and description, followed by analysis of discrete samples at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and...

This data release supports the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigation Map (SIM) by Clark and others (2020) by documenting the data used to create the geologic maps and describes the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers for a 442 square-mile area in northern Medina County in south Texas. The karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers that are the subject of the SIM by Clark and others (2020) are classified as major sources of water in south-central Texas by the Texas Water Development Board (George and others, 2011). The geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers largely control groundwater flow paths and storage in northern Medina County...

Boreholes were drilled in 2017 and 2018 in Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Two boreholes were completed as vertically discrete nested monitoring wells (MW1 as MW1A-MW1D and MW2.1 as MW2.1A-MW2.1C) and one borehole was completed as a single monitoring well (MW2 as RP8). Site locations and well construction are documented under the main page of this data release. Absolute (non-vented) pressure and temperature data loggers (PTDs) were deployed in these wells to monitor groundwater levels and fluid temperature over time. The period of record covers August 2018-September 2019 for all wells; the period...

Porosity, dry bulk density, and average mass accumulation rates, and estimated date of the mid-point of each sediment interval were determined for ten sediment cores retrieved from Lake Lanier in 2018. Physical properties of the sediment (porosity, dry bulk density) were used to help define the pre-reservoir surface and determine the average mass accumulation rate of sediment. This will help to better understand the historical accumulation of sediment and nutrients at select locations in Lake Lanier. The locations were selected to provide supplement a larger study investigating the role of septic systems on Lake Lanier water quality. Sites were distributed among selected study coves (with residential septic systems...
The dataset consists of three raster GeoTIFF files describing the following soil properties in the US: available water capacity, field capacity, and soil porosity. The input data were obtained from the gridded National Soil Survey Geographic (gNATSGO) Database and the Gridded Soil Survey Geographic (gSSURGO) Database with Soil Data Development tools provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The soil characteristics derived from the databases were Available Water Capacity (AWC), Water Content (one-third bar) (WC), and Bulk Density (one-third bar) (BD) aggregated as weighted average values in the upper 1 m of soil. AWC and WC layers were converted to mm/m to express respectively available water capacity...

Site locations and well construction are documented under the main page of this data release. Hydraulic data were acquired during drilling and on core samples to estimate the hydraulic properties of selected geologic materials. While advancing the drill stem, long-interval packer tests were conducted in MW1 and MW2 boreholes to measure in-situ formation permeability. The open borehole interval targeted for each hydraulic test was exposed by raising the drill stem about 10 m above the bottom of the hole....

Groundwater-quality data and geophysical information for relatively deep wells (wells generally more than 300 feet deep) containing saline water (dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 2,000 milligrams per liter) are limited throughout the state of Texas. Information derived from geophysical well logs can be used to estimate groundwater salinity. Geophysical logs were collected in 2021 from 10 of the 12 wells completed in selected aquifers (Trinity, Edwards-Trinity (Plateau), Carrizo-Wilcox, Sparta, and Yegua-Jackson) in Texas.
