This report surveys the definitions of reserve services used in several countries and regions of Europe and the United States that have implemented competitive electricity markets. It also compares the technical specifications of these services. The systems considered are Great Britain, PJM, California, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium as well as UCTE as a whole.
We estimate that from 500 million to possibly over 1 billion birds are killed annually in the United States due to anthropogenic sources including collisions with human-made structures such as vehicles, buildings and windows, power lines, communication towers, and wind turbines; electrocutions; oil spills and other contaminants; pesticides; cat predation; and commercial fishing by-catch. Many of the deaths from these sources would be considered unlawful take under federal laws such as the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. In this paper, we summarize this literature and provide the basis for the mortality projections for many of the apparent significant...

A polygon dataset of current road footprints in the SNK REA derived from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources infrastructure data (see the process steps for details). (This data depicts infrastructure locations in Alaska as digitized primarily from 1:24,000, 1:63,360, and 1:250,000 USGS quadrangles. The source document that represented the newest information and best geographic location was used to capture the data. All infrastructure from the primary source document was digitized and then supplemented with the information from other source documents for additional or updated infrastructure or attributes.)

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center observed bird flights at 7 study sites, twice weekly during two spring and two fall migration periods between April 3, 1981 and May 20, 1982. Study sites were located in south-central North Dakota in Barnes, Kidder, and Stutsman counties. The database includes flight observation's of bird species in the vicinity of power lines and transmission towers, number of birds in each flock, their reactions to power lines and transmission towers, weather conditions, and number of collisions.

Powerlines in the western United States. Data was obtained from the ICEBMP existing utility corridors data set. These data were reprojected to USA_Contiguous_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic_USGS_version and clipped to the MAR REA boundary.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a geodatabase containing mineral-related geospatial data for the People's Republic of China. The data can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries and related economic and physical infrastructure integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the area of study as well as the movement of mineral products across domestic and global markets. This geodatabase reflects the USGS ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity supply chains by updating and publishing the georeferenced locations of mineral commodity production and processing facilities, mineral...

Density of linear features, such as roads, power lines, telephone lines, and railroad tracks have been shown to influence synanthropic predator abundance patterns (Knight et al. 1995). Following Knight et al. (1995), we used linear features such as roads, railroads, and power line spatial data sets, but also included irrigation canals, to build a linear features spatial data set. However, we lacked spatial data on telephone and feeder-power lines and therefore our linear feature spatial data set vastly underestimates the number of linear features in some areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a geodatabase containing mineral-related geospatial data for 10 countries of interest in Southwest Asia (area of study): Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, and Thailand. The data can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries and related economic and physical infrastructure integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the area of study as well as the movement of mineral products across domestic and global markets. Powerlines in the western United States and Canada as identified by the 22 source data layers used to compile this shapefile. Source data were collected by personal contact or through the internet in the winter and spring of 2004 and assimilated using ArcGIS. This file is a complete record of overhead powerline data that was avaliable as of 5/15/2004 but IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A COMPLETE REPRESENTATION OF THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL POWERLINES ON THE GROUND. These data primarily depict the higher voltage, long distance transmission lines but some arcs likely represent lower voltage distribution lines.

The source document that represented the newest information and best geographic location was used to capture the data. In addition, ISER added major rivers (those being named in the Anadromous streams catalog and > 150 km in length) and the historic Iditarod Trails for additional reference.
