Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

Statewide maps of the probability of exceeding a given concentration of either uranium (U) or radon (Rn) in New Hampshire groundwater (represented as statewide rasters) are the product of statistical analyses and are available here. The dependent variables in these statistical models were either 1) the natural log of Rn concentrations or 2) a dichotomous variable indicating the exceedance of 1 microgram per liter (μg/L) U in groundwater samples. In the case of U, a dichotomous variable was used because of the large number of measured samples below the detection limit. A boosted Regression Tree (BRT) model was selected for the U analysis with an exceedance probability of 1 ug/L because that was near the center of...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This dataset is one of eight datasets produced by this study. Four of the datasets predict the probability of detecting atrazine and(or) desethyl-atrazine (a breakdown product of atrazine) in ground water in Colorado; the other four predict the probability of detecting elevated concentrations of nitrate in ground water in Colorado. The four datasets that predict the probability of atrazine and (or) desethyl-atrazine (atrazine/DEA)...

Studies utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry rarely result in 100% fix success rates (FSR). Many assessments of wildlife resource use do not account for missing data, either assuming data loss is random or because a lack of practical treatment for systematic data loss. Several studies have explored how the environment, technological features, and animal behavior influence rates of missing data in GPS telemetry, but previous spatially explicit models developed to correct for sampling bias have been specified to small study areas, on a small range of data loss, or to be species-specific, limiting their general utility. Here we explore environmental effects on GPS fix acquisition rates across a wide...

These data were estimated for use in the bioecomomic model simulation of the rainbow trout population in the Colorado River in Marble Canyon. The initial rainbow trout abundance is a vector (RBT_intN) representing the population of rainbow trout within each river segment (151 mile long sergments) along the mainstem of the Colorado River from Lees Ferry to 151 river miles downstream. The movement matrix (MMat) is a distribution that estimates the probability that a rainbow trout wil move to any one of the 151 river segments downstream of Lees Ferry.

This model is based on how dogs utilize wildlands near human habituation. These predators can have detrimental effects on wildlife populations (Alterio et al. 1998). We based our model on the data collected by Odell and Knight (2001) that investigated habitat utilization of these predators with regard to distance from housing and on the probability for a homeowner to possess a dog. We buffered both the populated areas and the campground distance layers in ARC/INFO using probability functions [P = 0.548 - 1.4589 * Distance (km)]. Any cell with distance less than 0.36km received a probability based on the function (0.556 to 0.001572) and all distances greater than or equal to 0.36km from populated areas or campgrounds...
