This report describes the results of flow tests on the rate and ultimate yield of uranium and pyrite leaching under conditions representative of carbonate in situ uranium leaching. The effects of cation type, pH, carbonate and oxygen concentrations, and flow rate were investigated for uranium leaching. Leachant cation, pH, and carbonate concentration had little effect on uranium leaching, but the leaching rate depended on oxidant concentration to one -half order. The insensitivity to cation type led to a new process whereby the leach solution is preceded by a preflush containing the chloride of the leaching cation. Twenty-five ore and gangue mineral separates from the Miocene-age Goldfield and Tonopah epithermal Au-Ag deposits in southwestern Nevada were analyzed to determine the helium, neon, and argon (He, Ne, and Ar) isotopic compositions contained in fluid inclusions. Four mineral separates from the Butte Main Stage vein deposit and two from the Bingham pyrite-enargite vein deposits were also analyzed. Fifteen separates are from hand samples collected from underground mine workings and the remaining 16 are from mine tailings piles and pits excavated within the past 100 years. This DGGS Raw Data File presents 40Ar/39Ar age dating results for selected igneous rocks encountered in the Styx River area of the western Alaska Range. Crystallization ages on biotite and hornblende from plutonic rocks range from about ~60 to ~63 Ma, while a sericite alteration age in plutonic rocks altered by a dike swarm also is around ~63 Ma. Sericite alteration associated with a copper-molybdenum porphyry ranges from ~10 to ~11 Ma. Multispectral remote sensing data acquired by Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor were analyzed using an automated technique to generate surficial mineralogy and vegetation maps of the conterminous western United States. Six spectral indices (e.g. band-ratios), highlighting distinct spectral absorptions, were developed to aid in the identification of mineral groups in exposed rocks, soils, mine waste rock, and mill tailings across the landscape. A U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provisional geochemical and mineralogical database for hydrocarbon-rich shale in the Appalachian region has been compiled by Catherine Enomoto, Frank Dulong and Robert Milici for online distribution. Multispectral remote sensing data acquired by the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor were analyzed using a new, automated technique to generate a map of exposed mineral and vegetation groups in the western San Juan Mountains, Colorado and the Four Corners Region of the United States (Rockwell and others, 2021). Spectral index (e.g. band-ratio) results were combined into displayed mineral and vegetation groups using Boolean algebra. New analysis logic has been implemented to exploit the coastal aerosol band in Landsat 8 OLI data and identify concentrations of iron sulfate minerals. The Mofete and San Vito geothermal fields, located west of Naples, Italy, are part of the Campi Flegrei volcanic complex. A joint venture in the 1970s between AGIP and ENEL, the Italian National electric and petroleum utilities, respectively, drilled exploratory wells to a depth of ~3000 m in an attempt to locate high-enthalpy fluids for potential power production. Drill core samples from Mofete wells (MF1, MF2, and MF5) and from San Vito wells (SV1 and SV3) contain authigenic ore mineralization. Pyrite, pyrrhotite, and galena are abundant. This data release contains programmed pyrolysis, organic petrographic (reflectance), and semiquantitative X-ray diffraction mineralogy data for subsurface coal and shale samples from around the world. Samples were subjected to hydrous or anhydrous pyrolysis experiments at varying temperatures and the resulting residues were analyzed via programmed pyrolysis and reflectance to document changes in thermal maturity.

The U.S. Geological Survey assessed undiscovered petroleum resources in the downdip Paleogene formations of the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2018. During the assessment new data and information were collected to evaluate thermal maturity, source rock character, and unconventional reservoir rock prospectivity for the Cenozoic-aged section in south Louisiana. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, conducted an investigation of acid-rock drainage from road cuts in Tennessee during 2014-2015. The Devonian Chattanooga Shale contains disseminated pyrite and is a primary producer of acid-rock drainage (ARD) in Tennessee. One objective of the overall investigation was to attenuate ARD by manipulating the indigenous microbial community through different treatment injections. This data release contains Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic petrographic (reflectance), and X-ray diffraction mineralogy data for subsurface Mesozoic rock samples from the eastern onshore Gulf Coast Basin (primarily Mississippi and Louisiana). Samples were analyzed in support of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment of undiscovered petroleum resources in the Upper Cretaceous Tuscaloosa marine shale and evaluation of shale gas prospectivity in the Aptian section of the Mississippi Salt Basin.
Vertical profiles of the chlorofluorocarbons CFC-11, CFC-12, and CFC-113 penetrating aerobic and anaerobic parts of a shallow sandy aquifer show that the CFC gases are degraded in the <1 m thick transition zone from aerobic to anaerobic groundwater in a pyritic sand aquifer at Rabis Creek, Denmark. Two-dimensional solute transport simulations with either zero-order or first-order degradation in the anaerobic zone corroborate this interpretation. The transport model was previously calibrated against detailed tritium profiles in the same wells.
