The Sevilleta LTER supports a long-term, integrated, interdisciplinary research program addressing key hypotheses on pattern and process in aridland ecosystems. Sevilleta LTER research includes studies in desert grassland and shrubland communities, and riparian and mountain forests emphasizing pulse driven processes in space and time. Key drivers (e.g., climate, fire, water, resource availability) govern dynamics in each landscape component. Our focus on how biotic and abiotic drivers affect spatial and temporal dynamics of aridland ecosystems allows us to conduct long-term research that addresses important basic theories and yet has significant relevance to regional, national and international priorities. The...

Grasslands of the Sky Islands region once covered over 13 million acres in southeastern Arizona and adjacent portions of New Mexico, Sonora, and Chihuahua. Attempts to evaluate current ecological conditions suggest that approximately two thirds of these remain as intact or restorable grassland habitat. These grasslands provide watershed services such as flood control and aquifer recharge across the region, and continue to support dozens of species of concern. Prioritizing conservation interventions for these remaining grassland blocks has been challenging. Reliable data on condition and conservation value of grasslands in the region have not been systematically summarized. State and national boundaries further complicate...

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation – Natural Heritage Program (DCRDNH) and the Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) at Florida State University (collectively, Project Partners) were funded by the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC) in April 2015 to develop ten species distribution models (SDM) of priority at-risk and range-restricted species (Ambystoma cingulatum, Echinacea laevigata, Heterodon simus, Lindera melissifolia, Lythrum curtissii, Notophthalmus perstriatus, Phemeranthus piedmontanus, Rhus michauxii, and Schwalbea americana) for the purposes of incorporating the models and supporting information on the conservation and management needs of the species into the...

These data describe differences in percent cover of microhabitats and vegetation types at giant gartersnake locations and random points paired with giant gartersnake locations for use in case-control logistic regression. The data also include information on the individual snake, the year of observation, and whether the individual had moved from its previous location to allow for correlation of the data within individuals and locations

These data were acquired from 7 study sites distributed across the range of Gopherus agassizii. Data were collected from 1997 to 2002 as part of three separate studies, although data were not collected at all sites in each year. Radio-transmitters were attached to the carapace of 151 females and VHF radio-telemetry was used to relocate animals to assess reproductive status. Egg production was determined from X-radiographs taken weekly/biweekly intervals (depending on the study) using a portable X-ray machine between April and July or August of each year. In addition, the mean carapace length (MCL) of each tortoise was measured at each time of capture or recapture using calipers (mm). A nesting event was recorded...

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species contains assessments for just over 76,000 species, of which about two-thirds have spatial data. This spatial data provided below is for comprehensively assessed taxonomic groups. It is important to note that some species such as those listed as Data Deficient are not mapped and subspecies are mapped within the parental species. The data is available as ESRI shapefiles format and contains the known range of each species. Ranges are depicted as polygons, except for the freshwater HydroSHED tables. The shapefiles contain taxonomic information, distribution status, IUCN Red List category, sources and other details about the maps (see metadata document). Please note that the files...

This vast 362,885-acre ranch lies in south central New Mexico along the Rio Grande River. The vegetation is Chihuahuan and semi-desert grasslands with cottonwood, willow and salt cedar riparian along the river. The Fra Cristobal Mountain range is home to a successfully reintroduced and subsequently delisted desert bighorn sheep population (click here for desert bighorn sheep listing on Turner Endangered Species Fund site). Big game species on the ranch include bison, pronghorn, desert mule deer, mountain lion, javelina and oryx. The lava tubes of Jornada lava field is the summer home for one of the largest bat populations in North America. Wildlife research projects conducted on the Armendaris include scaled quails,...

Data were collected in association with locations of standard brown treesnake traps on Guam at location prior to suppression or control efforts and after control had occurred. In all cases study sites were closed or semi-closed populations of brown treesnakes. Habitat data focused on type and structure of the habitat within 10-m of the trap.

NatureServe worked with several federal, state, and NGO partners in the United States and Mexico to conduct a climate change vulnerability assessment of major natural community types found within the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. The project focused on ten major upland, riparian, and aquatic community types, including pinyon-juniper woodlands, Joshua tree-blackbrush scrub, creosote-bursage scrub, salt desert scrub, Paloverde-mixed cacti scrub, semi-desert grassland, desert riparian and stream, riparian mesquite bosque, and desert springs. This effort piloted a new Habitat Climate Change Vulnerability Index (HCCVI) approach being developed by NatureServe, as a companion to an existing index for species. The project...

Funded by Arizona Game & Fish Department, our team of conservation biologists and GIS Analysts at Northern Arizona University are creating detailed linkage designs for 16 priority areas highlighted in the Wildlife Linkages Assesment. These plans identify and map multi-species corridors that will best maintain wildlife movement between wildland blocks, as well as highlight specific planning and road mitigation measures required to maintain connectivity in these corridors. Note: The linkage design reports are in compressed PDF format for faster download. Unfortunately, the compression occasionally makes small text on maps within the report difficult to read. If you would like a high-resolution PDF or PNG copy of any...

THE DESERT CONSERVATION PROGRAM - The Clark County Desert Conservation Program (DCP) manages Endangered Species Act compliance on behalf of Clark County and the cities of Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and the Nevada Department of Transportation (collectively, the Permittees) through implementation of the Clark County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP) and associated Section 10(a)(1)(B) incidental take permit. The DCP was established in 1990 through a collaborative forum of local government representatives, public land managers, private landowners, interest groups and individuals. Clark County serves as the implementing agent on behalf of the Permittees and the DCP...
