The Vista tool is used to create a Scenario of the native biotic integrity CAs affecting the North American Warm Desert Lower Montane Riparian Woodland, Shrubland and Stream CE and applies user-input Landscape Condition Model (LCM) scores to generate ESAs for each of the CEs. The LCM consists of Site Impact scores and impact Distances for each CA category. Site Impact scores are a value between 0 and 1 representing the impact of the CA on the relevant CEs. A score close to 1 indicates negligible or no impact from that CA. A score close to 0 indicates the highest possible impact, e.g. an interstate highway that makes the area in which it occurs completely unsuitable for the CE. Distances are set in meters and extend...

This raster is used to answer management questions (MQs) about where conservation elements (CEs) overlap with the total potential renewable energy footprint in the Central Basin and Range Ecoregion. While this assessment suggests the potential for large numbers of CEs and large areas of habitat to be impacted, only a small proportion of the total potential is expected to be developed.

This model provides one view of invasive annual grasses for the ecoregion, based on a model of invasive annual grasses, which has been summed into the 4x4km grid cells. This dataset represents the location and class density of potential annual grass risk within the Central Great Basin and Mojave Basin Ecoregion for the 2010 time period. This model represent a composite of multiple inductive (Maximum Entropy) models of varying annual grass cover using non-spectral landscape variables. Input Variables: elevation, aspect, distance to fire, geology, distance to hydric soils, distance to intermitant streams, landform, ombrotype, distance to perrenial streams, soil pH, density of primary roads, density of secondary/local...

This model provides one view of ecological integrity for the ecoregion, based on a model of near-future landscape condition, which has been summed into the 4x4km grid cells. Anthropogenic stressors come in many forms, from regional patterns of acid deposition or climate-induced ecosystem change, to local-scale patterns in agricultural drainage ditches and tiles, point-source pollution, land-conversion, and transportation corridors, among others. To be effective, a landscape condition model needs to incorporate multiple stressors, their varying individual intensities, the combined and cumulative effect of those stressors, and if possible, some measure of distance away from each stressor where negative effects remain...

This dataset contains 6th level HUCs for the Middle Rockies Ecoregion. For each HUC, size of riparian cooridors were calculated. Categorical values based on percent of cropland, percent natural landcover, and percent of impervious per area of riparian corridor were also calculated. Categorical values were assigned based on key ecological attributes table. Overall status of the riparian corridor in the ecoregion was calculated by summing the threat layers values. This dataset is intended to be used at the ecoregion level.

The dataset represents the work of multiple states and Federal agencies as part of the US Gap Analysis and LandFire programs. Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 were used in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is approximately 1 acre. Landcover classes are drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System concept. Five-hundred and fourty-four land cover classes composed of 12 cultural and 532 Natural/Semi-natural types are described. Land cover classes were mapped with a variety of techniques including decision tree classifiers, terrian modeling, inductive...

This simple assessment raster is used to answer management questions (MQs) about where change agents (CAs) overlap with BLM grazing allotments (GAs) in the Central Great Basin and Range Ecoregion. This is a basic footprint assessment of anthropogenic features (urban development, roads, etc) represented in the near-future (circa 2025)development scenario intersect with the areas of public land that are leased to private entities for grazing by livestock. It does not model actual response or condition of the GAs to the CAs. The data intersects two primary classes of information: The CAs consist of 20 classes which represent different types of human infrastructure on the landscape. Some types are easily defined, precise...

We developed habitat suitability models for occurrence of three invasive riparian woody plant taxa of concern to Department of Interior land management agencies, as well as for three dominant native riparian woody taxa. Study taxa were non-native tamarisk (saltcedar; Tamarix ramosissima, Tamarix chinensis), Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) and Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) and native plains/Fremont cottonwood (Populus deltoides ssp. monilifera and ssp. wislizenii, Populus fremontii), narrowleaf cottonwood (Populus angustifolia), and black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa and ssp. balsamifera). We generally followed the modeling workflow developed in Young et al. 2020. We developed models using...

The Sevilleta LTER supports a long-term, integrated, interdisciplinary research program addressing key hypotheses on pattern and process in aridland ecosystems. Sevilleta LTER research includes studies in desert grassland and shrubland communities, and riparian and mountain forests emphasizing pulse driven processes in space and time. Key drivers (e.g., climate, fire, water, resource availability) govern dynamics in each landscape component. Our focus on how biotic and abiotic drivers affect spatial and temporal dynamics of aridland ecosystems allows us to conduct long-term research that addresses important basic theories and yet has significant relevance to regional, national and international priorities. The...

Grasslands of the Sky Islands region once covered over 13 million acres in southeastern Arizona and adjacent portions of New Mexico, Sonora, and Chihuahua. Attempts to evaluate current ecological conditions suggest that approximately two thirds of these remain as intact or restorable grassland habitat. These grasslands provide watershed services such as flood control and aquifer recharge across the region, and continue to support dozens of species of concern. Prioritizing conservation interventions for these remaining grassland blocks has been challenging. Reliable data on condition and conservation value of grasslands in the region have not been systematically summarized. State and national boundaries further complicate...

In 2005, the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management (BLM) launched the Restore New Mexico initiative with the goal of restoring disturbed lands on a landscape scale through an ambitious partnership approach. What began as a concept has become a widely-successful restoration and reclamation program involving numerous agencies, organizations, ranchers and industry groups. Landscape restoration in New Mexico has focused on controlling invasive brush species, improving riparian habitat, reducing woodland encroachment, and reclaiming abandoned oil and gas well pads. In many areas, historic overuse of the land has transformed fragile desert grasslands and open woodlands into virtual wastelands of creosote and mesquite,...

The importance of riparian ecosystems in semiarid and arid regions has generated interest in understanding processes that drive the distribution and abundance of dominant riparian plants. Changes in streamflow patterns downstream of dams have profoundly affected riparian vegetation composition and structure. For example, in the southwestern United States, flow regulation has contributed to the replacement of many riparian forests historically dominated by the native Populus fremontii (Fremont Cottonwood) and Salix gooddingii (Goodding’s Willow) by the exotic species Tamarix spp. (Salt Cedar). The proposed project will help guide reservoir release decision making to enhance downstream recruitment of native cottonwood...
