Lifespan of salt marshes in Massachusetts (MA) are calculated using conceptual marsh units defined by Ackerman and others (2022). The lifespan calculation is based on estimated sediment supply and sea-level rise (SLR) predictions after Ganju and others (2020). Sea level predictions are local estimates which correspond to the 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 meter increase in Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) scenarios by 2100 from Sweet and others (2022). The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands, including Massachusetts salt marshes, with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and...

Salt marshes classification of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative geography covers the northern Outer Banks (and extreme southeastern Virginia, Back Bay area) south through NC, SC, and Georgia to approximately Sapelo Island. The marsh classification is derived from Landsat 8 OLI imagery acquired in May 14-19, 2014. This georeferenced imagery was atmospherically corrected, mosaicked, and water masked prior to deriving a set of three Normalize Difference Indices (NDX) bands: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Normalized Difference Soil Index (NDSI). Prospective salt marshes and associated tidal non-forested wetlands were classified using object-oriented...

How will climate change affect coastal wetlands and their ability to support fish and wildlife habitat and other important ecosystem goods and services for current and future generations?
Abstract (from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2745.12571/full): 1.Changing winter climate extremes are expected to result in the poleward migration of mangrove forests at the expense of salt marshes. Although mangroves and marshes are both highly valued ecosystems, the ecological implications of mangrove expansion have not been fully investigated. 2.Here we examined the effects of mangrove expansion on below-ground properties related to peat development and carbon storage. We investigated plant-soil interactions in marshes and across mangrove forest structural gradients in three locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico (USA). We compared our results to those from terrestrial grasslands where the...

Note: The 2021 data release "Geospatial characterization of salt marshes for Massachusetts" is a more recent and comprehensive MA salt marsh dataset. (https://doi.org/10.5066/P97E086F) The salt marsh complex of Plum Island Estuary and Parker River (PIEPR) was delineated to smaller, conceptual marsh units by geoprocessing of surface elevation data. Flow accumulation based on the relative elevation of each location was used to determine the ridge lines that separate each marsh unit while the surface slope was used to automatically assign each unit a drainage point, where water is expected to drain through. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been...

Note: The 2021 data release "Geospatial characterization of salt marshes for Massachusetts" is a more recent and comprehensive MA salt marsh dataset. (https://doi.org/10.5066/P97E086F) This data release provides elevation distribution in the Plum Island Estuary and Parker River (PIEPR) salt marsh complex. Elevation distribution was calculated in terms of mean elevation of conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2018). The elevation data was based on the 1-meter gridded Digital Elevation Model and supplemented by 1-meter resampled 1/9 arc-second resolution National Elevation Data, where data gaps exist. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey...

Note: The 2021 data release "Geospatial characterization of salt marshes for Massachusetts" is a more recent and comprehensive MA salt marsh dataset. (https://doi.org/10.5066/P97E086F) Biomass production is positively correlated with mean tidal range in salt marshes along the Atlantic coast of the United States of America. Recent studies support the idea that enhanced stability of the marshes can be attributed to increased vegetative growth due to increased tidal range. This dataset displays the spatial variation of mean tidal range (i.e. Mean Range of Tides, MN) in the Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO) salt marsh complex and approximal wetlands based on conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2019)....

Coastal wetlands purify water, protect coastal communities from storms, sequester (store) carbon, and provide habitat for fish and wildlife. They are also vulnerable to climate change. In particular, changes in winter climate (warmer temperatures and fewer freeze events) may transform coastal wetlands in the northern Gulf of Mexico, as mangrove forests are expected to expand their range and replace salt marshes. The objective of this research was to evaluate the ecological implications of mangrove forest migration and salt marsh displacement. As part of this project, researchers identified important thresholds for ecosystem changes and highlighted coastal areas in the southeastern U.S. (e.g., Texas, Louisiana,...

To assess the current topography of the tidal marshes we conducted survey-grade elevation surveys at all sites between 2009 and 2013 using a Leica RX1200 Real Time Kinematic (RTK)Global Positioning System (GPS) rover (±1 cm horizontal, ±2 cm vertical accuracy; Leica Geosystems Inc., Norcross, GA; Figure 4). At sites with RTK network coverage (San Pablo, Petaluma, Pt. Mugu, and Newport), rover positions were received in real time from the Leica Smartnet system via a CDMA modem (www.lecia-geosystems.com). At sites without network coverage (Humboldt, Bolinas, Morro and Tijuana), rover positions were received in real time from a Leica GS10 antenna base station via radio link. When using the base station, we adjusted...

All of these files are Microsoft Excel format files that contain water level data. We deployed 1-4 water level loggers and a single conductivity logger at all sites over the study period (Figure 6; Table 2). Primary water level loggers and conductivity loggers were deployed in major tidal channels connecting the marshes to the estuary. Secondary water level loggers were deployed in the upper reaches of second-order tidal channels to capture high tides and determine inundation patterns. Water level readings were collected every six minutes. We used data from the primary water level logger at each site to develop local hydrographs and inundation rates. Loggers were surveyed by RTK GPS at least once during the period...

The northern Gulf of Mexico coast spans a dramatic water availability gradient (precipitation range: 700 to 1800 mm/year) and represents an excellent natural laboratory for developing climate-influenced ecological models for natural resource managers and culture keepers. In this project, we used this zone of remarkable transition to develop macroclimate-based models for quantifying the regional responses of coastal wetland ecosystems to climate variation. In addition to providing important fish and wildlife habitat and supporting coastal food webs, these coastal wetlands provide many ecosystem goods and services including clean water, stable coastlines, food, recreational opportunities, and stored carbon. Our objective...
Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Pixels not identified as a estuarine marsh but that were identified as having the potential to be marsh were given a score of 1, provided the pixels were not classified as developed. Potential estuarine tidal marsh pixels were derived from a combination of potential estuarine tidal marsh classes in the Landfire...
