This dataset contains reflectance and transmission spectra of unexpanded and expanded vermiculite ore, and handpicked flakes of phlogopite, hydrobiotite, and vermiculite. These samples were collected from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, Llano, Texas; and South Africa. Spectra are identified as either reflectance or transmission in the alphanumeric file names and correlate to specpr record numbers designated in the manuscript figures in which they are shown. These transmission spectra were converted to absorbance in many of the figures. Spectra of talc, fibrous richterite amphibole, and serpentine are from well characterized samples from Feiser Mine, Ruby Mountains,...

Samples were submitted for contract laboratory analysis as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These Contract Lab results are part of the data release including grain-size distribution, photographic and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36 sediment core and alluvium samples as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis on select grains from magnetic and heavy mineral separates collected...

We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. Backscattered electron and secondary electron images of particulate matter in lung tissue were acquired. Inorganic particulate matter in the field of view of the image was analyzed using energy dispersive spectroscopy and subsequently identified and cataloged.

Research and surveillance reports have documented a significant increase in coal workers' pneumoconiosis, including the most severe forms of progressive massive fibrosis and rapidly progressive pneumoconiosis in U.S. coal miners, particularly those in Appalachian coalfields. Several possible explanations for these observations include excessive exposures to total respirable dust, increased exposure to freshly fractured silica and silicates, or greater exposure to smaller particles that may be the result of changing mining practices. This dataset contains the chemical and morphological characteristics of particulate matter retrieved from lung tissue slices of historical and contemporary miners.

Splits of samples were prepared of heavy mineral separates and bulk separates less than 2mm for analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and results were interpreted to identify mineral components as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI), in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These XRD results are part of a data release including grain size distribution, photographic, and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36 sediment core and alluvium...

This dataset is a collection of geochemical data on samples from the Stibnite-Yellow Pine district of Idaho. The datasets include: whole rock geochemistry; lead, strontium and neodymium isotope chemistry of sulfides and whole rock samples by isotope dilution-thermal-mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS); in situ sulfur isotope chemistry of sulfides by laser ablation-multi collector-inductively coupled-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS); electron microprobe (EMP) images, cathodoluminescence (CL) images and spectra, along with EMP and laser ablation-inductively coupled-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace element analysis of sulfides and quartz; and fluid inclusion microthermometry and raman. Samples were collected from the surface...
The Denver Microbeam Laboratory (DML) provides infrastructure and expertise for basic and advanced microanalytical research carried out by scientists from most Mission Areas of the USGS as well as outside collaborators. The laboratory houses optical microscopes, digital microscopes, scanninging electron microscopes, energy dispersive spectrometers, electron backscattered diffraction, cathodoluminescence, and electron microprobes. The data collected in the Denver Microbeam Lab is used by researchers in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, geologic mapping, hydrology, biology, and environmental science.

The San Juan River is a major water source for communities in the Four Corners region of the United States (parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah) and is a vital source of water for the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency (NNEPA) periodically samples surface water on the Navajo Nation and has found that some elements exceed NNEPA surface water standards (the upper limits of an element for consumption or other use of water). Constituents of concern are substances that could be harmful if present in sufficient quantities, and it is important to monitor the concentrations of these substances in the environment. In the San Juan River, constituents of concern include metals detected...

The U.S. Geological Survey New Jersey Water Science Center (USGS NJWSC) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has assembled this data release in support of ongoing USGS and NJDEP evaluations related to the occurrence and distribution of elevated trace elements, particularly arsenic (As) and vanadium (V), in Inner Coastal Plain soils and sediments of New Jersey. The data for four sediment cores are presented, and the data types include: 1. Site locations and general characteristics for the four sediment cores collected during the study; 2. Lithologic descriptions of each sediment core; 3. Portable handheld X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data for each sediment core (every 6...

Heavy and light mineral separates were extracted from the 36 collected field samples following a USGS procedure (Strong and Driscoll, 2016) and analyzed using the handheld portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI), in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Data are provide for four samples of unexpanded vermiculite ore from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, and South Africa. ASCII text files listings of Mossbauer data for each sample are provided in comma-separated by value (csv) files. These files have the file naming structure sampleid_mossbauer_spectra.csv, where sampleid is a unique alphanumeric code for each sample. These samples were chosen as representative of the ores from their various mine sources, having documentation verifying that they were collected directly from their sources.

Grain size analysis using an Advantech Sonic Sifter Separator was conducted as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Following field collection the samples were sieved into the greater than and less than 2 millimeter size fractions. The less than 2 millimeter fraction was sifted into seven grain size ranges. Each size fraction was weighed to 0.1 grams and photo documented. The cooperator for this study is...
