In 2007, the California Ocean Protection Council initiated the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP), designed to create a comprehensive seafloor map of high-resolution bathymetry, marine benthic habitats, and geology within the 3-nautical-mile limit of California’s State Waters. The CSMP approach is to create highly detailed seafloor maps through collection, integration, interpretation, and visualization of swath sonar data, acoustic backscatter, seafloor video, seafloor photography, high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles, and bottom-sediment sampling data. The map products display seafloor morphology and character, identify potential marine benthic habitats, and illustrate both the surficial seafloor...

Maps on sheet 9 show the thickness and the depth to base of uppermost Pleistocene and Holocene (post-LGM) deposits, both for the Offshore of San Gregorio map area and, to establish regional context, for a larger area (about 91 km of coast) that extends from the Bolinas area to the Pescadero Point area. To make these maps, water bottom and depth to base of the LGM horizons were mapped from seismic-reflection profiles using Seisworks software. The difference between the two horizons was exported from Seisworks for every shot point as XY coordinates (UTM zone 10) and two-way travel time (TWT). The thickness of the post-LGM unit was determined by applying a sound velocity of 1,600 m/sec to the TWT, resulting in thicknesses...

The map area offshore of Fort Ross, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Fort Ross” map area is located on California’s north coast, about 90 km north of San Francisco and 60 km south of Point Arena. The onshore part of the map area is largely undeveloped, used primarily for grazing and recreation; the small town of Jenner (population of 136, 2010 census), located at the mouth of the Russian River, is the largest community center. The coast and shoreline are rugged and scenic, characterized by rocky promontories, kelp-rich coves, and nearshore rocks and sea stacks. U.S. Highway 1 extends along the coast through the map area, crossing the Russian River and passing through Fort Ross State Historic...

The map area offshore of Pacifica, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Pacifica” map area, is located in northern California, on the Pacific coast of the San Francisco Peninsula about 10 kilometers south of the Golden Gate. The onshore part of the map area extends from Daly City (population about 101,000) on the north, through Pacifica (population about 37,000), to the small coastal community of Montara (population about 2,900) on the south. Much of the coastal zone is managed by either the State of California or local governments, including the coastal recreational sites at Thornton Beach State Park, Mussel Rock Park, Pacifica State Beach, Gray Whale Cove State Beach, and Montara State Beach....

The Offshore of Point Reyes map area occupies the western corner of the triangular Point Reyes Peninsula and is about 30 km north of Bolinas and 50 km south of Fort Ross. The offshore portion of the map area is located within the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. The onshore part of the map area is largely undeveloped, used primarily for recreation and ranching, as well as oyster farming in Drakes Estero. The Point Reyes Peninsula is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The coast and shoreline are scenic and diverse, ranging from rolling hills and secluded sandy beaches surrounding Drakes Bay and Drakes Estero, to the steep rocky granitic promontories at Point Reyes headland, to the long, exposed...

The map area offshore of Bodega Head, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Bodega Head” map area is located in northern California, about 80 km north of San Francisco and about 90 km south of Point Arena. The onshore part of the map area is largely undeveloped, used primarily for recreation, farms and ranches, and a few wineries. The small town of Bodega Bay (population 1,077; 2010 census), located on the eastern side of Bodega Harbor, is the largest cultural center. The smaller town of Bodega (population 220) lies 8 km east of the coast on the eastern edge of the map area. Bodega Harbor is an important commercial fishing base and, in season, an active sport fishing and recreation harbor....

The map area offshore of Tomales Point, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Tomales Point” map area, is located in northern California, about 60 km north of San Francisco and 110 km south of Point Arena. The map area includes offshore waters, Tomales Point (the north end of the Point Reyes Peninsula), the northern part of Tomales Bay, and coastal lands east of Tomales Bay. The onshore part of the map area is largely undeveloped, used primarily for recreation and ranching, as well as oyster farming in Tomales Bay. The Point Reyes Peninsula is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore, and two small areas on the east coast of Tomales Bay are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area....

The map area offshore of Salt Point, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Salt Point” map area, is located in northern California, about 110 km north of San Francisco and 50 km south of Point Arena. The map area includes three California Marine Protected Areas (MPA; California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2012): the southern portion of the Stewarts Point State Marine Reserve, the Salt Point State Marine Conservation Area, and the Gerstle Cove State Marine Reserve. The coast and shoreline are rugged and scenic, characterized by rocky promontories, steep bluffs capped by bare to forested marine terraces, kelp-rich coves, and nearshore rocks and pinnacles. The largely undeveloped onshore...

The map area offshore of Aptos, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Aptos” map area, is located on the Pacific Coast, on the north side of Monterey Bay, 88 kilometers (55 miles) south of San Francisco. The largest incorporated city in the map area, Capitola (and numerous unincorporated towns including Aptos) lie on uplifted marine terraces between the shore and the northern-trending Santa Cruz Mountains, part of the northwest trending Coast Ranges that run roughly parallel to the San Andreas Fault Zone (SAFZ) (California Geological Survey, 2002). As of 2013 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated populations of Aptos and Capitola were approximately 6000 and 10,000 respectively. Aptos is one of the...

Modeling the distribution of ecologically and economically important species provides managers and conservation planners with information on a broad spatial scale that is useful to coastal management, ocean energy, marine protected areas, and marine spatial planning. These maps display predictive models of occurrence for common benthic macro-invertebrate taxa and maps the probability of occurrence of these taxa in the Santa Barbara Channel. These models are based on real-time biological observations of all macro-organisms made during ground-truth surveys conducted in 2008 and 2009; the observations were made during a 10-second interval every minute along camera transects, which were approximately 1 km in length....

The map area offshore of Bolinas, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Bolinas” map area, is located on the Pacific Coast of Marin County, 10 km (6 mi) north of the Golden Gate. The town of Bolinas is the largest population center along this section of coast with a population of approximately 1,600 people. Bolinas is named after a local indigenous tribe. Bolinas is situated at the end of a southeast trending terrain on the western side of the San Andreas Fault that also protects a natural harbor. The harbor lies in Bolinas Lagoon, which is separated from Bolinas Bay by a spit. The harbor hosts two marinas, a boat launch, and two fishing ports. There is little recreational boat activity in...

These maps show the thickness and the depth to base of uppermost Pleistocene and Holocene (post-LGM) deposits (blue- and pink-shaded units of seismic-reflection profiles) both for the Offshore of Salt Point map area and, to establish regional context, for a larger area (about 115 km of coast) that extends from the Salt Point area south to the southern part of the Point Reyes peninsula (Maps C, D). To make these maps, water bottom and depth to base of the LGM horizons were mapped from seismic-reflection profiles using Seisworks software. The difference between the two horizons was exported from Seisworks for every shot point as XY coordinates (UTM zone 10) and two-way travel time (TWT). The thickness of the composite...
