This layer contains polygon features of Ecological Units for the state of California as described by ECOMAP (1993),.. "Ecological types are classified and ecological units are mapped based on associations of those biotic and environmental factors that directly affect or indirectly express energy, moisture, and nutrient gradients which regulate the structure and function of ecosystems. These factors include climate, physiography, water, soils, air, hydrology, and potential natural communities."

WSDA has developed an agricultural land use geodatabase to assess the effects of agricultural production on Washington's natural resources. The geodatabase can store, query, and manipulate geographic information and spatial data used to identify agriculture land use in state. Crop data, the main component of the geodatabase, is compiled by WSDA crop mapping specialists. These specialists employ specifically-targeted fieldwork combined with a knowledge of agricultural practices and crop identification skills. Using a GPS-equipped vehicle and a laptop computer, WSDA crop mapping specialists gather data to inventory acreage in crop production.
