These data map in high detail surficial cross-sections of North Core Banks, a barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC, in October 2022. U.S. Geological Survey field efforts are part of an interagency agreement with the National Park Service to monitor the recovery of the island from Hurricanes Florence (2018) and Dorian (2019). Three sites of outwash, overwash, and pond formation were targeted for extensive vegetation ground-truthing, sediment samples, bathymetric mapping with a remote-controlled surface vehicle, and uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) flights to collect multispectral imagery. Five semi-permanent ground control points were also installed and surveyed to act as control for additional aerial...

These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), major anions (chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, sulfate, etc.), organic carbon, and general water quality characteristics in Pinyon Plain Mine containment pond water, invertebrate, vegetation and sediment samples, collected in calendar year 2022.

The Cabin Branch and Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrops are located along two small creeks in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The Cabin Branch outcrop contains exposures of silty sands of the Upper Cretaceous Severn Formation, and both outcrops contain Paleocene silty quartz and glauconitic sands of the Danian Brightseat Formation and highly fossiliferous glauconitic quartz sands of the Selandian Aquia Formation. Data from these two locations were generated in order to designate a Principal Reference Section for the Danian age Brightseat Formation. The Cabin Branch outcrop consists of disjunct exposures along an approximately 0.4-mile section of the creek. At the nearby Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrop a more...

This data release supersedes version 1.0, published in October 2021 at https://doi.org/10.5066/F74F1NW7. Versioning details are documented in the accompanying VersionHistory_P9DZ321R.txt file. This data release presents sediment grain-size data from samples collected from core S3-15G, a 4.72-m long gravity core collected at a depth of 3,491 meters on the western levy of the Monterey Fan on May 31, 1978 (USGS Field Activity S-3-78-SC).

Changes in Arctic coastal ecosystems in response to global warming may be some of the most severe on the planet. A better understanding and analysis of the rates at which these changes are expected to occur over the coming decades is crucial in order to delineate high-priority areas that are likely to be affected by climate changes. The data provided in this release are part of a study that assessed the likelihood of changes to a barrier island – lagoon systems in response to projected changes in atmospheric and oceanographic forcing associated with Arctic warming. Arey Lagoon and the surrounding area near Barter Island, Alaska, were focused upon as part of this pilot study. The study investigates the dominance...

This dataset includes field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, bottom water (sediment-water interface), surficial (0-2 cm) sediment, pore water (0-2 cm), and biota collected in Lake Combie, California, from September 2017 through August 2021. The study area includes six sites within the reservoir where discrete samples of surface water, bottom water, sediment, and pore water were taken along the length of the reservoir at the following distances from the spillway: 0.07 miles, 0.5 miles, 0.9 miles, 1.2 miles, 1.3 miles, and 1.4 miles. The within-reservoir sites were sampled during September 2017, February 2018, and May 2018, prior to a large sediment removal operation, and again during September...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Marine Sanctuary Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has conducted seabed mapping and related research in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) region since 1993. The interpretive datasets and source information presented here are for quadrangle 5, which is one of 18 similarly sized segments of the 3,700 square kilometer (km2) SBNMS region. The seabed of the SBNMS region is a glaciated terrain that is topographically and texturally diverse. Quadrangle 5 includes the shallow, rippled, coarse-grained sandy crest and upper eastern and western flanks of southern Stellwagen Bank, its fine-grained sandy...

In October 2017, the Atlas, Nuns, and Tubbs wildfires in Napa and Sonoma Counties, CA burned approximately 133 thousand acres. Multiple watersheds were affected by the fires, with up to 95% of some watersheds being burned. Post-fire assessments were conducted at 10 sites within Napa and Sonoma Counties to assess the effects of fire on sediment, water quality, and ecology. This data release contains data from the analysis of benthic macroinvertebrate samples, bed sediment samples, water quality samples, and algal samples.

Mercury (Hg) is a well-known toxic element and environmental contaminant. The central valley of California has long been identified as a hotspot for Hg contamination due to the historic mining of Hg in the California coast range, and its use in the mining of gold in the Sierra Nevada, with these mountainous regions bordering the east and the west of the valley, respectively. While the whole central valley is world renowned as a major agricultural area, the northern portion, known as the Sacramento valley region, is dominated by commercial rice production. Since rice is grown in flooded fields, and since wetland soils are known to be particularly effective habitats for converting inorganic mercury into the more toxic...
