Data from mercury intrusion porosimetry conducted on samples of a mudstone underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey
This data set presents the results of conducting Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry on core samples of the mudstone underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey. The core samples were selected from the continuous core collected from boreholes 83BR-89BR.
Holocene debris flows do not occur uniformly on the Colorado Plateau province of North America. Debris flows occur in specific areas of the plateau, resulting in general from the combination of steep topography, intense convective precipitation, abundant poorly sorted material not stabilized by vegetation, and the exposure of certain fine-grained bedrock units in cliffs or in colluvium beneath those cliffs. In Grand and Cataract Canyons, fine-grained bedrock that produces debris flows contains primarily single-layer clays—notably illite and kaolinite—and has low multilayer clay content. This clay-mineral suite also occurs in the colluvium that produces debris flows as well as in debris-flow deposits, although unconsolidated...
Database for the geologic map of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park region, Tennessee and North Carolina
The geologic map database of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park region of Tennessee and North Carolina is a result from studies from 1993 to 2003 as part of a cooperative investigation by the U.S. Geological Survey with the National Park Service (NPS). This work resulted in a 1:100,000-scale geologic map derived from mapping that was conducted at scales of 1:24,000 and 1:62,500. The geologic data are intended to support cooperative investigations with the NPS, the development of a new soil map by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. In response to a request by the NPS, we mapped previously unstudied areas, revised the geology where problems existed, and developed...
Lithologic characterization of cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey
This data set presents the lithologic interpretation of rock cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. Continuous core from these boreholes was collected and visually interpreted to identify characteristics of the depositional environment of the mudstone. Three types of mudstone were identified: a black-fissile mudstone (BLK-FIS); a gray-laminated mudstone (GRY-LAM); and a gray massive mudstone (GRY-MAS). The BLK-FIS mudstone is associated with a deep-water depositional environment. The GRY-MAS mudstone is associated with a shallow-water depositional environment. The GRY-LAM mudstone is associated with a transitional depositional...
U-Pb detrital zircon data and Ar feldspar data from middle Cenozoic sandstones and volcanic tuffs from southern Nevada, USA
This Data Release accompanies the planned publication, "Paleogene sedimentary basin development in southern Nevada, USA." Included here are U-Pb detrital zircon and Ar/Ar feldspar geochronologic data for middle Cenozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks collected by Jens-Erik Lundstern and Theresa M. Schwartz in several parts of southern Nevada, U.S. The target strata are the lowest Cenozoic sedimentary rocks deposited above the base-Cenozoic unconformity. U-Pb detrital zircon data were obtained at the University of Arizona LaserChron Center in Tucson, Arizona in February 2021, October 2021, and January 2023. 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic data were collected at the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado.
Organic and total carbon analyses of rock core collected from boreholes 83BR, 84BR, 85BR, 86BR, 87BR, 88BR, and 89BR in the mudstone underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey
These data sets present results for analyses of the fraction of total and organic carbon in samples of rock core collected from boreholes 83BR, 84BR, 85BR, 86BR, 87BR, 88BR, and 89BR in the Lockatong Formation (mudstone) underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey.
Groundwater tracing experiments conducted in the mudstone aquifer underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, NJ (2007-2008)
This data set presents results from two groundwater tracing experiments conducted in the mudstone aquifer underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. In each test, a bromide solution was introduced into a hydraulically isolated section of borehole 36BR (denoted as 36BR-A); the hydraulically isolated section of the borehole isolated specific bedding plane parting fractures intersecting the borehole 36BR. In the first test, initiated in July 2007, water samples were collected from borehole 15BR; borehole 15BR is outfitted with a submersible pump operating continuously as part of the pump-and-treat operation at the NAWC to prevent off-site migration of groundwater contaminants. In the second...
